A picture's worth a thousand words. [Archive] - Wizards Community

I like to print out pictures to show to my players to help them visualize their surroundings. I find that it goes a long way towards putting everyone in the spirit of the game when they all have the same basis for imagining the world around them.

To that end, I recently came across a site with some really nice pictures to use. It's not RPG-related, but the pictures are pretty amazing. The pictures are provided as desktop backgrounds for a computer but if you ignore the calendar, most of the pictures are pretty useful. The site is here:

Anyone else do this to help players visualize your world?
Anyone else have good picture sites they'd like to share?

05-04-05, 02:39 PM Well, in addition to D&D, I also play FFXI (Human Ranger named Thoronmir on Alexander server if anyone wants to find me). For my last campaign, I decided I needed some visuals to help my players “see” the world around them. So, I spent a weekend taking multitudes of screenshots on FFXI. I then printed the pictures on good paper to use at the appropriate time in my campaign. My players were impressed and they said that it really helped.

For the uninitiated, FFXI has a world vast enough to include any type of environment, climate, and terrain. I’ve used pictures of caves, tunnels, rope bridges, cathedrals, shops, dunes, jungles, glaciers, etc., to breathe a little more life into my homebrew world.

05-04-05, 03:24 PM Sounds kewl will have a look I have just started DMing after well last DMed when it was called Basic D&D and only played since.
In the last game I used the pictures of the monsters to help show what the party were fighting each on a separate piece of paper so as they ran into it they could see it. Seemed to work well and the party seemed to like it. Have a DM in my friday night game who gives us graphics of characters and items we have found. It just seems to add a little more to the adventure.
