As a DM, I love presenting my players with moral/roleplaying dilemas. I think it forces them to flesh out their characters and helps define what the character believes in.

Example: Recently the party I DM was in Myth Drannor looking for a lost magic item. They stumbled upon the Starym family crypt. It was defended by a baelnorn who let the elf wizard enter. The wizard found the magic item he was looking for in there, but he also found "Aryfaern Kerym, the artblade"
This is a major artifact of elven legend. It is intelligent and very selective about who it allows to wield it. (NG alignment, very elf-centric etc). The players were in a huge hurry and had time only to take the item they came for.

The dilema for the elf wizard. Does he change his alignment and the way he plays, and hopefully he can take possession of the sword. He is level 17 and CG. If he try's to take the sword and it judges him unworthy he will lose spellcasting abilities for 1d6 years!

Or, does he tell the elves of Evermeet where the sword is and surely get a great reward?

BTW, does he tell the other party members that he found the sword? They are currently unaware. They are also all non-elves.

What should he do? What would you do?

First off, alignment is not something you change like an out of fashion jacket, so no real moral dilemma there.

If he is keeping secrets like this from his fellow party members, people that have probably saved his life on occasion, then your party has deeper issues than what to do with some ratty old elf sword.

He should tell the rest of the party and they should decide as a team whether to give the information to the Evermeet elves.

I agree with Cymrblubblubblubba regarding the alignment. But regarding the secret not so much. If this was any old artifact like vecna's hand, or cuthbert's cudgel or some such I could see it being a problem. But this is an artifact that is important to his people, it cannot even be wielded by anyone else in the party.

If I was him I would get word to the elves of evermeet by the most secure method possible. Alternately, keep the secret and then come back for it after the current adventure is done.

On a side note I remember when the Forgotten Realms just had the elves going off into the west and no one knew where (just like LOTR) and somehow it morphed into Evermeet and all this stuff. I liked it the old way.
