Ok so in my campaign I am running a level 5 with a Paladin (who knows nothing of how the paladin needs to behave), a Bard/Wizard, fighter (run by the same player, the most expirienced in my group, under me, of course), and a rouge, I started it off by giving them a chalenge to deliver some armor to the armorer of the inperial legion in the capital city. (sounds simple right?) So they run into a group walking the same way as them a bit farther up in a meadow about 100' - 200' going north to south and about 50' east and west. The band was made up of an Elf, 3 orcs, a warhorse and a bugbear. They took them down after a long battle and find out they were commanded by the Dark knight Legion to kill them, with writs on the body of the elf, he was also a mercinary. Three deaths occured in the starting town of Barthall and the writs for them were there too. A little village is to the south about 50' It is named Raeron. They find a weaponsmith who has a holy advenger and the paladin wants it badly so i gave them a quest to gain the armor of the 40+ level sorcerer of the Nineth Hell of Baator and the paladin says how can we get there? I then ran them past a guy who was attacked by assassins and left for dead but they saved them taking themselves back to Raeron. The session stopped before they got to Raeron cause that was all that i had planned. The battle got the rouge an adamantine dagger and the paladin 20 shock and 20 frost arrows. I am planning on sending them on a dangerous advenmture in which Kas the retired lieutenant of Vecna has risen so he comes and lets it be know and calls forth all of the demons from Hell out of a fiery pit. they destroy the shrine of pelor to the south of Raeron and set up a camp. Pelor comes with many angels and archons and other good creatures and the imperial liegion gathers behind them. Kas vanishes and the hole contracts together closing itself. All of the good god's surround the party to get them out of there after the party gets a holy advenger, some ancient bar4dic armor and a blade i made up, and they go on a sabotage mission but the Evil gods (except Vecna) come to aid the Demons and they go kill an Elemental ambassador and a drow mercinary/ training party and steal some orders from Kas. With the death of the embassador all of the elementals come to aid the good and a huge battle rages on in which the PCs become heros. I can make this work but what do you think of it? Am i being too generous?

Your going to have to explain this one a bit...

" an elf, 3 bugbears and a warhorse " ???

This is a little confusing to me and maybe to your PCs as well. Why were they being targeted by this dark knight and already shown the script with thier death sentence on it??

The story sounds good as a potential lead for your campaign, but I think you rushed it. All PCs need to feel invested into the game on some level, make them draw the story out as much as you give it out.

Your player "paladin" being inexperienced will not work. I suggest changing him to a fighter, although with a noble heritage, as no paladin would wield ranged weapons. Preferring to use honorable combat face-to-face with sword and shield. I guess his new magical arrows are not very useful....

Good luck.

P.S. Whats up with the warhorse ??

Well the Elf, 3 orcs and a bugbear were acompanied by a warhorse. It was a fight to the death witll all of the party. Even the horse... well we do need a healng spellcaster so do you think I should change the paladin to a cleric or druid. He's a little better with those characters.
