| mikeabboud01-08-04, 09:57 AM | Hi all I dont know if theis question has been asked before, I am sure it has, i'll ask it any way When a PC gains followers through the feat leadership; does he have to pay for them. Please back up any responses with refrence to the DMs guide or any other book put out by WOTC. I haven't seen where the DMS guide says they have to be paid for, only that they are gained as ones leadership score increases. Thanks for any help Mike Abboud |
| Fixxxer01-08-04, 03:14 PM | Are you asking whether the PC has to pay them for their service or are you asking if he has to pay for their upkeep? To pay for thier service...well, why should he have to? The feat as I understand it, causes admirers to flock to you. When's the last time an admirer flocked to you and said "Hey, I think you're great. You'ven so many great and honorable things. I'd really love to travel with you and learn from you. My going rate is eight silver pieces per day plus hazard pay and I don't want to touch anything icky."? To pay for thier upkeep...I'm not sure what the rules state about this. |
| PenderGrass01-08-04, 03:18 PM | There are no specifics about it as far as I recall - but then again there is nothing indicating they do NOT have to pay for their upkeep.... and even further I know that it says this Feat is only available at the DMs descretion (in fact, since it is totally up to the DM to include it in his game - that is why it is listed in the DMG), so HOW it operates exactly would be totally up to him - and any player that got it should be thankful that he got it at all!!! But the DM must make sure to tell the player prior to selecting it HOW it operates in his game. |
| PenderGrass01-08-04, 03:21 PM | To pay for thier service...well, why should he have to? Why? Well....., just ask any rock star out there - they have to pay for all them little groupies that hang on to them and feed off their teats of success..... Although, there is no "have to" - but if you had someone eating 500gp meals and their cohorts having to beg for a single meal out of the dumpster - well, I doubt that would make him very loyal. Share the wealth would be a good thing - after all, you attract more with honey then vinegar. |
| Ithandul01-08-04, 04:59 PM | I know that in the temple of elemental evil game, your followers would just run up and grab some of the loot, and refuse to give it back (usually). This may or may not be relevant since it is a video game, but it did use the 3.5 rules. Whether or not the company (Atari?) understood them well is another question. Personally, I'd give them enough to live, and pretty much leave it at that. Buy them a room at the inn, and a meal, and maybe some armor or something if they don't already have it. But as far as splitting the loot (as they did in ttoee), forget it. *It's mine* |
| Rasmus01-08-04, 06:10 PM | Followers in 3.5 does not get paid, but it is up to the leader to supply equipment and upkeep (like food and a place to live). (DMG pg. 105) |
| mikeabboud01-08-04, 06:11 PM | sounds like its up to me, I figure as long as you cover their room and board thats the extent of the pay. Thanks for all your imput. Mike |

Well....., just ask any rock star out there - they have to pay for all them little groupies that hang on to them and feed off their teats of success..... I'd classify that under "upkeep." You have to fund the groupie's hotel, food, drugs, etc...but you don't actually pay them just for being there or for rendering their own...unique services. |

But it also says in the DMG that you get a bonus to your leadership score, (letting you get more/better followers) if you're fair and generous with them. So it doesn't seem that you need to pay upkeep, or even feed them, but they do a lot better if you do. Also, there's a reason all the prices are written down in the Hirelings section - because they're Hirelings, completely different to followers/cohorts. That's what it seems to be, anyway. |

| PenderGrass01-09-04, 10:57 AM | You could let them starve to death, but what would be the point in htat? Just because they are supposed to be loyal and dedicated does not mean that they stop being people. Any mistreated cohort/follower would first be subject to the newly adjusted Leadership Standing from mistreating said people. Second, I extremely doubt a person would just stand by and starve because their mentor decided NOT TO FEED THEM. They would either find a way to feed themselves or go somewhere where they could find food. Remember this is a Leadership Feat - not a Fanatical Follower Feat (which might be something you would want to add - with the pre-req being the Leadership Feat). I think for the one of the best examples you could ever find for qualifications of being a True Leader can be found in the stipulations set forth by the US Marine Corps (god bless the Corps!!!). Which means a leader should not just be someone that barks orders and punishes those that sway from their chosen duties - no, a leader is someone that sets the example, someone that sacrifices for the good of the team (and that is what his cohorts would be - HIS TEAM), and someone that shows respect to all that follow his lead. If you took this Feat in my game and then mistreated your followers/cohorts badly - well, let's just say you would pay for their suffering. |
