A question for mature DMs [Archive] - Wizards Community

I posted a question on the mature boards but, as that board doesn't get a lot of traffic, I thought I would post a link from here. There are some DMs on this forum whose opinion I trust and would like to hear their take on it. I would appreciate any input that anyone might have.

Disclaimer: The post deals with mature subject matter and should not be viewed by those under 18 years of age. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=499809)

The value is probably dependant upon your game world; supply and demand.
Do the slaves come with a gaurantee or is it buyer beware?
Are the slaves "broken" or are they likely to be difficult.

If the slaves are likely to make repeated escape attempts, they are probably not worth anything since they will cause trouble and may bring down the morale of any other slaves in an owner's stable.

If the slaves are guaranteed to be workhorses... obedient and respectful, then they should be worth quite a bit, for the two potential slaves have a lot of experience and powers... especially the 7th level sorcerer.

At a minimum, you could count the 7th level sorcerer to be required to cast at least 1 3rd level spell per week... The PHB says that a 7th level person casting a 3rd level spell is worth about 210 gp. The wholesale value is about half of this, or 105 gp... then multiply by the "unlimited use" (50 charges) and I'd put the minimum price for the sorcerer at about 5,000 gp.
You could modify this if the sorcerer has a repitoire of spells that are more or less useful to the buyer... someone with only spells that have a target of [self] is probably not worth much, but a sorcerer that has a lot of spells to buff others or perform utility functions like levitate, fly, divination spells, craft spells, etc, could be worth more GP.

If you want to use a different formula, you might consider that a character is worth 1/2 of thier expected wealth per level... that looks like it would work out reasonably well also.

I'd like to comment, but I'm not mature.

I guess as a follow up to Phrennzy's comment:
It is my opinion that you can usually make an good estimate of the players maturity by the amount of mature content in the game.

The most mature players I know don't use any mature content.

The most mature players I know don't use any mature content. . . . whereas 13-year-olds are pretty much guaranteed to be packing the BoVD around.

Truest. Statement. Of. All. Time.

Anyway, the OPs question isn't actually what I would consider mature content, at least not any more than asking about decapitation of trolls.

I have actually been meaning to add slavery to my game. Remember to not think about slavery as being a necessarily racial issue. Also slaves weren't always treated as poorly as they were in America just before the civil war. Granted they were never treated like kings, but you have to keep your idea of slavery open.

Most Lawful Evil societies would have slavery. Neutral Evils would too. Lawful neutrals may or may not have slavery. Slavery among good societies should be rare at best, since slavery works on the concept of force and fear.

The more willing a society is to be cruel to the slaves the cheaper the slaves would be. Enslaved adventurers past 1st level would be worth a good amount, since they would be rare and valuable. Of course they would be hard to keep as well (especially rogues and sorcerers). Fighters Rangers and Barbarians would be valued as gladiators. A Druid would make one hell of a gardener. Any class has their use.

The given models are a good guideline, but first figure out how slavery works in your campaign.

I don't want to sound argumentative, but how does the amount of mature content in the game reflect on the player. In my mind, that would reflect more on the DM as a whole.

Wait, did I just call myself ...

I am using the words "players" as inclusive of all people playing the game, both players and DM.
In my experience, the players and the DM both have a nearly equal say in what the subject matter of the game is. The DM has the "final say", but a good DM will also create adventures that reflect the type of game the players want to play.

I could rephrase it as follows:
The most mature players AND the most mature DMs do not use any mature content.

Perhaps it isn’t. However, I was simply attempting to be cautious and avoid any confrontation with the mods. My apologies if I offended anyone.

And you'd be just as wrong. You are simply stereotyping. Stop that.

Mature things happen in D&D, killing is mature, especially wonton killing. Slavery is not "mature content", it's been around longer than just about anything (except maybe the "oldest profession"), that used to be one of the spoils of war, it was common practice in biblical days, it happened (and in some cases still happens). Selling and buying sentient creatures... evil, evil to the very core, but by no means is it "mature content".

It amazes me how people pussyfoot around with stuff like sex and slavery, but killing dozens of creatures is OK. The whole PC schtick just annoys the hell outta me.

On the off topic conversation that is going on. Mature things happen, you are dealing with adults (even that 15 year old fighter is an adult) characters. I'm not saying that a group of 10 year olds should be having things of this nature, but doing a blanket statement that no mature content shows maturity is just ridiculous.

This is true, however I doubt this is so much of an assumption on the OP's part as it is on WotC's part. Slavery and drug use are generally reserved for the mature forums and we've all seen the WizOs lock such threads with the recommendation that they be restarted on the mature forums. Whether or not we believe some topics are more or less mature than others is irrelevant. The WizOs consider them to be mature content, which means that that's where they belong if you don't want your thread closed.

My problem with ermedic's question is the slave themselves. A 7th level sorceress who happens to be a noble would not work as a slave. Nobody in their right mind would want a slave that powerful. The minute the owner falls asleep and that could be the last thing he does. A half-dragon troll would be an oddity, but I also think that it would be too powerful for the average slave owner's tastes. There is a reason why most slaves are zero level, any more power and they wouldn't be slaves for long.

As for players dealing in the slave trade, they would certainly be evil in alignment or at the very best a neutral character with strong evil tendencies. Slaves would probably go for 10-100 gp dependant upon the skills (slaves with craft, perform, or profession skills are more valuable); stats; and race of the slave. That price might sound cheap, but consider the ongoing expenses of owning the slave.

I would say slave owners would tend to be evil, but then again George Washington and Thomas Jefferson own slaves too...

This may be one of those crazy post-1973 things, but roleplaying as a medium is perfectly capable of tackling such issues. WW has done so, and made their market share from it. WOTC is definately aiming at a different demographic, but I dont see why it needs to be all PG13.

And you'd be just as wrong. You are simply stereotyping. Stop that.Get over yourself.
Read what I said. Do you my acquantences people better than me?
My statement is valid and truthful. My statement was not a stereotype.
The most mature players I know do not use mature content in thier games.
Plain and simple.
If you know mature people that like to dwell on rape, drugs, and torture... then you can say that and I would have no grounds to object.

Also, where is there a problem with stereotyping? It is a convention that helps identify people based on a few indicators. If I see someone with a hat with a marajuana plant and they wear a button that says "support NORML" I could stereotype and think to myself "that person probably smokes pot recreationally".
If I see a slender woman driving a hybrid car and a man driving a muscle car, I could think to myself "The woman is more likely to be a vegan than the man".
If I read a roster of four names: "Olivia, Emma, Sarah, Ashley" I could stereotype and think "those are probably caucasian girls". If I read another roster of four names "Aliyah, Jasmyn, Shanice, Ebony" I could stereotype and think "those are probably black girls"

You are exhibiting the worst traits of the overly PC/uninformed reactionary. stereotyping, as with any other convention, can be be useful or not. If I decide that I am only going to hire Olivia, Emma, Sarah, or Ashley instead of Aliyah, Jasmyn, Shanice, or Ebony, then that is a problem. The problem wasn't the stereotyping, but the action I chose to pursue because of the stereotype.

Back to the OP question: Braindead suggests that a noble sorcerer would not likely make a good slave. That was the point of my first paragraph in my first response... some slaves would be more trouble to own than they are worth and have no value.

Except that you left out the important "i know" in your first sentence.

On topic, I also think no one in their right mind would buy a powerful sorceror, much less a noble, as a slave. Ransoming her maybe, but that's completely different than having her as a slave. That's just a massive revolt waiting to happen.

Thank you...this was my point exactly. I'm beginning to see why they might feel this way. After all, look how much bickering resulted from my decision to classify it as mature. I can only imagine how many people might be offended by the actual subject matter.

Thanks for the link as well, Fixxxer. It will come in handy. :tiphat:

. . . whereas 13-year-olds are pretty much guaranteed to be packing the BoVD around.

This reminds me of a phenomenon on the Reaper Minis website. You can view each figure in detail, and each tells you below it how many hits it's had.

No matter how cool the wizard or fighter or elf you are looking at is, if the figure next to it is a succubus or naked in any manner whatsoever, it will have something along the lines of two-to-three times as many hits. I mean the difference of 2,000 versus 5,000 for the succubus.

All I can imagine are zit-faced little boys crowded around computer screens, drooling and saying things like, "whoa!"

I take HUGE offence to all remarks about younger players being obsessed with "mature content". Being 14 myself, I don't know ANYONE who would choose to look at DnD minis because they are naked. First of all..... They're friggin' lead models! I mean, c'mon. Second of all, I have never seen the BoVD in the hands of anyone who appeared to be younger than 30. The people I play DnD with are far too mature for that sort of thing, and they are all 13 or 14 years old. IMO, many "children" are FAR more mature than people give them credit for.

EDIT: I just realized how rediculous this post looks if you read my sig and see the post about "balls".... oh well.

EDIT #2: I just realized that I completely ignored the disclaimer that said not to read the post if you were under 18.... oh well.

When I sit down at a gaming table to play as a character, something I have been known to do from time to time, I don't do it to show off how remarkably mature I am to the rest of the people playing. D&D is an escape from who I am, it allows me to do things and act in ways I would never do in the real world. As for being mature? I am blessed in my life to not have to dwell on things like drugs, rape, and torture. So if coming in contact with these things occurs during my escape from the real world, I say bring it on! It's all about what you think is fun,and I like not playing in a world too much like my own. Does that make me immature?

You have to edit your account information to include your date of birth, print a form, sign it back with a copy of your birth certificate, answer the trivia questions about events of the past 15 years (must score at least 75%), and have two other account holders with mature content authorization vouch for you.

j/k All you really need to do is modify your account information and agree to abide by the honesty clause in the TOS. To do that, click on your log-in name, click the "my account" link, and go to "edit profile" which should be along the left-hand side of the page.

This is a pretty complex question, and not one I really know how to answer other than to say, "Probably a lot." It depends greatly on the world, the culture, the buyer, and the person being sold.

I'm a little surprised that this thread spawned this weird "mature" argument, though. It seems to me that if someone makes a thread "I have a mature question - here it is" it is neither helpful nor appropriate to respond "I think mature games are bad!"
