a question on animal companions [Archive] - Wizards Community

One of the characters in the campaign I'm running now has an owl companion. I'm not quite sure how to handle it's intellgence, etc., I mean I've had this problem before with animals the PCs have had. Example, the PCs set up camp in the wilderness, 4 PCs each on watch one at a time, now while the Druid sleeps he says he leaves the owl up to watch. So my question is if something (let's say orcs) tries to sneak up on the group and the person on watch fails to notice them, but the owl does notice the orcs what would it do. Would it make noise to alert everyone, fly to the druid to wake up, I'm not quite sure so I would appreciate any assistance. Also do you think it would react differently to say a wolf, or a dragon, or some abberation??
Thanks in advance, I'll take all the advice I can get on this one.

The owl will make screeching noises, possibly try to wake up the druid, or maybe even attack the orcs if they don't have weapons drawn and it can get a fly by attack in. The owl will be smart enough to determine that, and if it buys the PCs time to prepare, all the better.

The owl may do what it takes to alert the party: if a wolf appears, it may attack the flank of the wolf to scare it off since it can swoop down on it, or may settle for screeching and flying above the wolf, to give the PC on watch an area to look towards. A dragon...well, they're probably dead anyway, but the owl might try to alert them (though it is hardly going to risk it's own life) if it makes a save vs. dragon fear. Failing that, it will flee.
