A question on ECL and earning exp [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm still a little hazy on how LA affect exp, so here's a senario, see if i have it right...

Players are to start at 10th level.
Player chooses a 6th level fighter with a la+4 template(with no racial HD)
This makes him ECL 10
This means that to get another level, he needs to get to 11th - 55,000 xp

so far so good.

Does his character start with 15,000 exp (6 level char) or 45000 (L10 char)?
Does this char earn exp as per his ECL (L10), or as per his Char level (L6)?

From what i understand, i'm guessing he should start with and earn exp all as his ECL, but in all other respects is treated as a 6th level character (Feats, stats, skillpoints etc)
So he would start at 45,000xp, and earn exp as a 10th level char, keeping him in line with the rest of the players.

Please tell me i'm right, or at least be gentle :-)

What you have heard is true. I see no flaws in what you believe to be correct.

On a side note, it would suck if he had to get 40k+ XP to gain a level.

Yup. That all sounds right. ECL applies to everything XP-related.
