Okay, my friends and I recently started a new campaign and the party is made up of 1 Paladin, 2 Clerics and a Rogue. After the last session, the party was left with a choice. To help a powerful tribe of orcs, led by a Neutral Good Half-Orc Cleric, to over throw the rigid Aristocracy of the kingdom of Medina and establish a Democracy in its place, or to deny the orc's their conquest and allow the Lawful Neutral Aristocracy to stand as it is, saving a lot of blood yet allowing the commonfolk to continue to be subjugated and live in mild poverty.

My question: Which choice would put the clerics and Paladin in more hot-water with their deities? (Those deities being Heironeous and Pelor)

Thank you

Are these 2 choices set in stone? Is there a reason why a compromise could not be brokered between the 2? Everyone wins!:D

Also, I would want to ensure that the new democracy can at least promise a better life for the people, else you are just creating more trouble. After all, the current ruling party is not evil, perhaps just a tad misguided or incompetent (seeing as to how the folks are living in poverty).

Honestly, a compromise between the two COULD be possible.... but the two sides of the conflict have been at odds for years, one side is made up of orcs which the aristocrats would likely refuse to speak to, and the Half-Orc leader is hell-bent on ending the noble class' power as quickly as possible. So yes, it would be POSSIBLE but no, a peaceful solution is not likely to come about.

Why would your PC paladin want to over throw a Lawful Neutral govt.? If it was evil, sure why not, and he is most likely obligated. Because the Aristocracy is rigid does not warrant an over throw.

Maybe, you could expand on some examples of "rigid". You could argue any lawful governemnt is rigid... it is the basic nature of lawful. But I feel you are trying to relate another aspect as well.

What kind of life will the common folk have under the NG 1/2 Orc. If the people live in poverty now, what is going to change to that they won't live in poverty tomorrow?

My first impression this is not a moral issue, but remains a purely political struggle. If you want it as a moral issue, I'd throw in the king or top dog of the aristocracy is evil to give your paladin a reason to go rebel.

These are political problems... and is mortals problem too. No problems with none of your characters. BUT i think the paladin can't question the laws because he is lawful aligned... he's not lawful if he goes against the laws...
Revelion is a Chaotic... not even neutral...

Nope. Not one thing in the lawful descriptions says a thing about following the law.

Generally this kind of thing will make it impossible from a a paladin to function in a evil government.

Is government abusing its power? If so, those doing it should be dealt with, otherwise the cleric shouldn't be trying to overthrow the government.

If the government is truly lawful neutral and not evil, it would be wrong to sponsor a war for the NG orcs to take over. You have to ask yourself, what would cause more suffering? Keeping commoners in mild poverty, or killing thousands of soldiers (many of who might be drafted commoners who you're trying to save)? I think the killing is the greater evil by far.

Quite frankly I question whether you as DM grasp the alignment system if the warmongering orcs are good in your world. Seeking to violently overthrow another's society and replace it with democracy is not something good people do.

The truth is that neither of these is a choice for a paladin. He can't overthrow the idiot leading the country, but he can try to reason with him. He can't allow the orcs to invade and overthrow the government because this is against the lawful and slightly against the good alignment (from a point of view).

If these are the only two choices they are offered, they should not aid the orcs. Democracy is not guaranteed to better the people it governs, but revolutions are sure to cause bloodshed.
