| AffableDoomwalker10-15-07, 07:17 PM | ... and they meet their good buddy sneak-attack; they combine forces against an enemy. Does the sneak attack even stack with the trip attack? If it does, is there an AoO for the defender? Have I missed a really important part of the DMG or PHB that covers this kind of stuff? Thanks in advance. |
| weasel010-15-07, 07:46 PM | 1)No. The trip is made in place of the attack. 2) see above 3) see above This is all dependent on my guessing on the kopesh not having any extreme abilities. If there are special allowances, ignore me or please correct me. |

Nope, you're spot on - its just a masterwork kopesh in the hands of a level 2 rogue - I just decided to preemptively ask this question before the issue came up (which I know it will) in my new game. Thanks for your help |
| Colmarr10-16-07, 12:02 AM | Does the sneak attack even stack with the trip attack? The "trip attack" is a touch attack followed by a Str v Str or Str v Dex opposed roll (with some miscellaneous modifiers). The "trip" action doesn't cause damage, so it can't trigger sneak attack bonus damage. If it does, is there an AoO for the defender? I'm not sure why you think AoOs are connected to whether the sneak attack damage is dealt. But to the point: trip attacks with a weapon (such as a Kopesh) do not provoke AoOs. Have I missed a really important part of the DMG or PHB that covers this kind of stuff? Check the PHB entry for the "Trip" combat action, and the "Kopesh" entry in the DMG. |
| CroBob10-16-07, 01:21 AM | Improved Trip will give a free attack on a successful trip, and that attack might allow for sneak attacks. |
| Cifer10-16-07, 08:31 AM | Improved Trip will give a free attack on a successful trip, and that attack might allow for sneak attacks. However, that only happens if there is some other reason for it - prone enemies still have their dex bonus, meaning no Sneak Attack just for them lying down. |
| Green_eyes10-16-07, 09:54 AM | If the enemy is still flat-footed, when he is dropped prone, you get your sneak attack as usual. |
| CroBob10-16-07, 03:05 PM | However, that only happens if there is some other reason for it - prone enemies still have their dex bonus, meaning no Sneak Attack just for them lying down. Hence "might". |
| Cifer10-16-07, 06:18 PM | Hence "might". Just wanted to clarify that one. |
