I was just wondering, what are some of the best magial items for rogues to play with? I ask because the solo campagin I'm running right now focuses on a rogue, and I'd like to start giving him some magic items.

I don't care if the items are from books or homebrew, anything that a rogue would enjoy is welcome.

Thanks.

No self-respecting Rogue would turn down a Rod of Ropes from Complete Scoundrel. :D

Basic boost items for rogues:

Gloves of Dexerity
Cloak of Blending
Boots of Silence
Magical weapon is good for everyone... rogues usually go scimitar, short sword or rapier.... finessable weapons.
Potions... invis, cat's grace, etc
Scrolls... Use Magic Device helps them rock... Detect Traps, Shield, etc

Think of what your rogue focuses on and get a booster item for them.

Since you are having a solo rogue game that can be done in multiple ways. One is to focus on stealth and overcoming traps. In that case items such as a ring of invisibility or hat of disguise are key. If you plan to have a fighting rogue then a Ring of Blinking is key since it allows sneak attack damage with every attack. Items that allow Darkvision are key also.

Note that in combat rogues are either very powerful or completely useless. Constructs, undead, elementals, plants, and oozes are all immune to a rogue's primary offensive ability.

MY player's rogue focuses on stealth alot, but has an uncontrolable urge to try and kill any truely powerful NPCs he encounters (hostile NPCs that is, not so much the helpful ones). Thus far in the game he has favored hit and run tactics, sneak attacking with his dagger thenfalling back until he can hide in the shadows and strike again. Needless to say this is tedious and can get dull rather quickly, as my player has complained. He has expressed the wish that he could be more effective in a fight, and he has a vast intrest in magic (possibly going to take wizard levels later on).

Show him the Arcane Trickster PrC and see if he wrings his hands together and laughs quietly to himself, in a satisfied manner... ;)

Likes magic, does he? ...yet no levels of any casting class? As long as he's been keeping up his Use Magic Device skill you can still send wands and whatnot his way... :)

You forgot all about a diplomatic rogue, like a sneaier bard...

Immovable Rods. You can never have enough of them.

If the crafty use of an Immovable Rod can't solve the problem at hand, likely nothing can. ;)

During one campaign one of my players had an immovable rod. Well, he once told me that while adventuring his thief had a length of rope tied over his leather armor, forming a harness, and that the other end was tied to an immovable rod. The length of the rope between harness and rod was exactly as far as his arm could stretch out over his head. At one point he dove off of a 1,000 foot cliff and said that when he was about 50' off the ground he would extend the rod all the way out, activate it, and let go. The theory was that the rod would stay in place and the thief, while wearing the rope harness, would simply spin around the rod and use up all the kinetic energy. Well, I figured that this was a creative use of the item, so I had him make a DC check of 35 to see if he had tied the rope harness with the right amount of extra rope so that he would not get jerked around when the rod stopped moving. I also had him make a dex check of a DC of 35 to make sure that he got the rod as close to perfectly flat as possible. Well, he made both rolls and survived, leaving his enemy far behind!

Personally, though, I like to craft these without the button but use a command word instead to activate and deactivate them. I then put a stirrup on two of them which allows them to looped over boots or shoes, and then "chanting" the command words in the right sequence you can use four of them (two on the feet, two in the hands) to create a movable "ladder."

Take care and have a great day....

ciao,
john.

PS The above mentioned player also liked to fix blades to one end, have them turned invisible, and then use them to ambush pursuers.

Handy Haversack is a must if you follow the encumbrance rules. Especially if strength is your rogue's dump stat.

Mithril chain shirt and later Celestial Armor; takes advantage of that high dex AC.

Belt of Dwarvenkind or Googles of Night. No use having all of those ranks in move silently when the enemy can see your lantern in the dark dungeons.

Anything that gives a bonus to a core rogue skill such as move silently, hide, or search. Vest of Escape, Boots/Cloak of Elvenkind, Googles of Minute Seeing, armor with silent moves or shadow enhancement, etc.

Hat of Disguise is a no brainer for the social rogue.

Cloak of Resistance to make up for poor will/fortitude saves.

Rope of Climbing.

Slippers of Spider Climbing.

Gloves of Dex. Obviously.

Ring of Feather Fall for when he fails a search and reflex save to avoid pit traps.

Ring of Invisibility; another obvious one.

Immovable rod has, as already stated, a thousand uses. It does usually involve you letting go of an item though, which no rogue is wont to do. (I for one tend to sleep cuddling a sack of mine)

A hat of disguise that can be folded down to pocket size (cloth caps, no big straw nonsenses) is the bare minimum for any undertaking ever, rogue or not. You will, without a doubt, at least once per game session, whatever you're playing, at some point think "I wish I was someone who isn't me right now".

A mop and bucket. Regardless of how secure the castle, how impregnable the fortress, how inaccessible the treasury, someone has to make sure the lavvy remains in good nick.
Flashy folk might use a false bottomed bucket to smuggle in picks and tools, and some might have a mop stick built like a sword cane, but that's not my style.
Some people use a broom for this task, but brooms are for dry work ad are generally respectable, however a mop and bucket implies that you've spent the morning knee deep in splashing effluence and even the most elite guard won't approach you.
The modern equivalent of this, of course, is a High Visibility Jacket, a clipboard and a radio blaring out Heart FM through your headphones. If they try to stop you, pull a survey for them to fill out from the clipboard and watch them recoil in terror. Paperwork works like turn undead on living targets.

And the final vital piece of equipment, make sure you have scruffy hair, because people feel they can always trust someone with scruffy hair.

No matter what class, race, alignment.. go nowhere without a crowbar. They always come in handy.. If you are rich and dont have anything to spend money on you can buy enchantment bonuses to it xD

Other than that, the classics like gloves of dexterity is nice. hat of disguise and slippers of spider climb.

My rogue has always found Dust of Invisablity(with permanancy I know it is 2e but come on it is worth it) and a great story of a warrior woman flashing her partner just before battle. He was kinda long winded and loved to drink so he didn't need much to keep others at bay.
