I've been running a nice game of IRC-D&D for the past four months, and recently ran the players through a bugbear-ambush on a rivercrossing. Not content with slaughtering their assailants, the party decided to track the surviving bugbear back to its lair and kill the rest. The following occured:

[22:48] <Kerin> The room is about thirty feet across, and circular. Carved into the walls are beds, and two wooden bunk-beds made of tree-limbs lashed together lean across the wall. A large, wooden table with more roughly-hewn chairs occupy the center of the room.
[22:49] <Kerin> Two torches occupy brackets in the walls, and a single no-frills, but serviceable-looking oil lantern sits upon the table next to a collection of crude wooden toys.
[22:50] <Kerin> Against the far wall huddles a number of bugbears; several small ones, obviously children, cling to the legs of a larger female, who shields them protectively with her broad arms. The bugbear Navy tracked lies glassy-eyed next to them, slumped against the wall, ratty bandages half-applied against the fatal wound in his gut.
[22:51] <Navy> (...)
[22:51] <Talia> Talia's stomach sinks, a feeling of guilt washes over her.
[22:51] <Kerin> Two more bugbears, which appear to be female, sit on the floor weeping hysterically. The children see your entry and cry out anew in fear, huddling against the matriarch in terror.
[22:52] <Kerin> In a garbled, coarse tone the female speaks. "Please do kill," she says passionately. "Not our baby!"
[22:53] <Talia> "we umm, I'm sorry, umm we should go" Talia backs up as she says the words almost backing into Navy.
[22:54] <Talia> "the others, they attacked us, I am sorry we won't hurt your babies"
[22:55] <Talia> Talia felt sick with guilt looking at the young creatures.

After that, they started scrambling to find ways to save the bugbear they killed. It's amazing how quickly players can shift from bloodthirsty to desperately, desperately guilty, mmn?

I love the taste of verisimilitude in the morni.... evening.

And it makes me sad to think that I've played with people where it would have gone more like this:

[22:51] <Brian> My character draws his longsword and looks around the room to make sure it isn't a setup.
[22:53] <Brian> They're bugbears, right? Always Chaotic Evil. I don't even bother with my detect evil - they're born bad.
[22:54] <Brian> "Your baby will soon be at the feet of your foul dark god, evil beasts!"
[22:55] <Brian> I attack the female. Does a 18 hit?

Thank god I don't play with him anymore.

Oh god. That reminds me of the time I played with this kid Chris. Games always went like this:

Kerin: The Kobold chitters, and resumes carving the walking-stick.
Chris: I cast Detect Evil.
Kerin: ...It's Lawful Evil.
Chris: I kill it.
Kerin: what.
Chris: I kill it with my Greatsword.
Kerin: ...why?
Chris: Because it's evil. I'm a paladin.
Kerin: It didn't DO anything.
Chris: It's evil, I'm Lawful Good.
Kerin: It's sitting on the porch of the tavern CARVING A STICK.
Chris: And it's evil.

And so began the legacy of Thardor, Paladin of the Alignment Police. I don't play with him anymore.
