I was wondering about the dynamics of the forum and curious if I could create a thread that won't die. Here goes:

Paladin
Baby kobold
LG in a draconic society
CG drow
Archlich

That should do it.

I was thinking of getting a skunk kit. And maybe teaching it to retrieve a frisbee (a mini, not a full size one), over the course of say 6 to 18 months. The purpose of this would be two fold. Skunks: Just awesome. And seriously, if *you* happened to see that at the local park, wouldn't it just make your day?

Bah. You can't just create a thread that will never end you have to draw the right people into it.

Kind and reasonable people will discuss the issues and in the end they will come to a concensus and the thread will be done.

For it to never end two or more sides must not understand the other person's argument or be unwilling to change their stance no matter how wrong they are proven to be.

I have no doubt that this thread will die when people run out of things say.

You must have been very bored CeresOfTerra.

you forgot "Statting Her Serenity/Giving Her an alignment"

Furthermore, all threads die eventually, except when they don't, and even those can be killed and reincarnated.

Threads eternal:

War Game threads, likley to be reincarnated periodically with power shifts.

Back on topic: the only one i see there that rings a bell as an eternalraging debate (drizzt clones tend to be shot down with unanimity) is the paladin/baby kobold issue. We've all heard it, nature vs. nurture. put the 'evil race' kids to the swords, leave them fend for themselves, or go on a sidequest to find good homes for them. my advice to fellow DMs: DON'T! do not throw this at a party, especially not one with a paladin. it's a moral conundrum that endless posts have yet to work out. there is NO answer that satisfys all the requirments and appeases all trains of thought. this sort of thing will rip your session to shreds debating and possibly derail your next one if your players take the good homes route.

I think this thread will be here for a rather long while. Why do I think so? Because we wont decide which topic to talk about, so we will enddlessly argue over which topic to argue about while random people say this thread will die and others will say it wont.

Apparently the ones who say it will die have yet to acend to the level where they understand posting here will keep it alive.

So yes, in short shorts, it will live to plague the world for many an eon.

CN isn't such a bad alignment. I allow it in my camps and usually take it when I play in others. It allows freedom, I don't play characters crazy - they just do what they want to.

I've never had a problem with it.

Really... The idea of a thread that's created for the sole purpose of not dying won't stand... if you want a thread that won't die it needs to be a disguised ambiguously controversial topic for people to keep posting and won't get locked.

Oh but it IS a contraversal topic. It's a topic on what we should discuss and there is nothing more contraversal then that.

Actually, I think that's impossible. Any topic controversial enough to go on forever would certainly have to be something that enough people feel stronly enough about that they would continue to support their point regardless of any of the following:

A) Accepting the logic of someone's argument and changing their minds.

B) Proving their point and changing the minds of those in the other camp.

C) Getting the thread locked.

D) Getting bored and ceasing to post in that thread.

In conclusion, it's "Getting shot. In the face. With a hammer." I love that smiley. :)

Yes, I took the bait, and I will gnaw on it some more.
Lawful Good. Does not kill babies. To quote the PHB(p.105): "a paladin....protects the innocent without hesitation".
To quote the MM(p.161): Kobold
"Alignment: Usually lawful evil"(emphasis mine).

To condem an innocent to death is neither lawful nor just nor compassionate. No Paladin should ever not save the babies, even if it means risking their life and the lives of the party. That is the fun of being a Paladin.

Personal opinion: CG Drow equals cliche. Drow in general equal boring. They should be evil, rare, and soon to be dead.

CeresOfTerra, if you have actually started a moral debate just by posting the words Paladin and baby Kobold, I will have lost much of my hope that people just can't help but to argue with each other.

And that will make me sad.

Then I will just have to shake my head at you.
Agent 34

07-25-04, 02:34 AM
Yes but you must remember that Paladin's are religious and as we all know from history class religion with a sword mixed with a little zeal means blood will flow. Though a baby Kobold is usualy evil which means not always, he will believe that all Kobolds are evil because his religion teaches him thus.

So it is the Paladin thing to do to kill the baby Kobold.

A paladin shouldn't even think about killing kobolds, unless they attack them. Why would he kill a helpless baby kobold? The Answer: Cuase he can. Yup. He has the power to kill and should use it!

Infact, he should just enter the town center, detect evil for three rounds, and just start slaughtering everything that moves. Including any monkey butlers that happen to be out and about getting their masters milk for the day.

If the Paladin spent more time seeking out those that actually are evil and cause death, fear, halitosis, etc, like Archie the lich, then said paladin wouldn't have to go looking for infants to murder.
Agent 34 must remember DnD provides many religious options that are not modelled on historical Christian/Islamic zealotry.
A Paladin devoted to Heironeous wouldn't kill babies as there is no valor in slaughtering those that cannot defend themselves.
As a DM I would rule that Heironeous would look with disfavor on any of his Paladins or Clerics that engaged in genocide. I have stripped Paladins of their powers for less.

Heh. Artificial threads like this can't even approach a fraction of the real thing. It's one thing to see someone say that they think it's a good thing to cast holy smite at random members of the populace and see who it kills, they having been judged by good (including those poor neutral souls).

It's another to know that they are serious.

Really, recent threads haven't come close to reaching that sort of peak. I guess its cyclical, as they blossomed all over the place about 6-8 months ago.

Actually, it's odd. It was all sparked, as some of you might remember, by a thread where a character defended the murder of a helpless party member because of their character's racial hatred, over on the What's A Player To Do forum. Ended up getting locked, but not before a couple of other threads on the same subject appeared. And then the What's A DM To Do began seeing similar threads with increasing frequency.

And then, slowly, it began to die down. Sure, there are posts about alignment issues now, but nothing like that giant spurt. And usually things that aren't nearly as exteme. Really, it's hard to be that incredulous and sarcastic about things you see in current threads after going through that. Including a number of statements from accounts that I'm certain were created just for trolling that particular subject in its hayday.

If anyones mildly interested, I pulled this quote from a past post where I compiled some links. Some where locked, some where pruned (so they'll be dead links), but others are probably worth a read.I do, however, have links for the interested:

Killing a tribe of goblins in order to take something that you want (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=99337)

Killing babies by lighting them on fire out of spite. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=99182) :king:

Quirk's Exception: Intentional invocation of Godwin's Law is ineffectual.

I'd like to add that with the advent of Quirk's Exception any attempt to end a discussion with the premature inclusion of Nazis instead insures its extension through the invocation of Quirk's Exception.
Tek

07-25-04, 06:49 PM
Godwin's Law prov. (Usenet) "As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one." There is a tradition in many groups that, once this occurs, that thread is over, and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost whatever argument was in progress. Godwin's Law thus practically guarantees the existence of an upper bound on thread length in those groups. However there is also a widely- recognized codicil that any intentional triggering of Godwin's Law in order to invoke its thread-ending effects will be unsuccessful.

Bah... Paladin's of Lord Toastytot are special in their abilities and requirements.

They must be Lawful Evil, and their code requires that they destroy and kill anything that they think is evil, most likely is evil, or likely to become evil.

Their Aura of Good is replaced with an Aura of Evil, the Detect of Evil ability operates continously but only reveals the presence of the evil, not where the evil is coming from.

The Special Mount ability still works, sort of. It will only summon lawful evil mounts which the "Paladin" is obligated to kill.

Also at first level the gain the "ability"...

Delusion (Ex):
A Paladin of Lord Toastytot can and will not believe what he does is evil (rather they believe they are good) and nothing can alter this belief.
