| Disciple_of_Salsa06-27-07, 10:37 PM | One of my players has a half-giant pysic warrior. (People who don't have the expanded psionics handbook won't understand some of this post) Because of the half giant's racial thing, he fights with a large greatsword, even though he is meduim. He then took monkey grip, and got a huge greatsword. He plans to take that one epic level feat from the complete warrior that allows you to fight with an even bigger weapon. So, with the huge weapon, he is 9ft tall and the sword is 16 ft long, yet can he still only attack people 5 ft away. Does anyone but me find that odd? Also, would you impose a penalty to attacks against some one standing next to a wall, becuase he has to shorten up with his attacks. Also, once epic with a gargantuan sword, it will be roughly 32 feet long. So, with his gargantuan brilliant energy greatsword, he should be able to check smaller rooms for invisible opponents just with a swing. Heck, the brilliant energy would let him check the other sides of doors for people in the room. Does it work?   |

So he should only have a Large Greatsword and not a Huge one and he will not be eligible for an even bigger one later. |
| Disciple_of_Salsa06-27-07, 10:52 PM | I am not sure if Monkey Grip and Powerful Build(half giant thing) stack, but the epic feat has monkey grip as a prerequisite, so it would make very little sense if they didn't stack. |

Then I suppose that when he is eligible to take that feat then he can have his huge greatsword but he still can't use it now and will never be able to wield one larger than huge. Edit: Unless he somehow makes himself larger. |
| Necrosis06-27-07, 11:12 PM | hmm my gut says they wouldn't stack since they do similar thigns. But its still pretty cool if not a lot inconveinant-hes goign to need a VERY big portable hole jsut to carry it around. |

Nope, the epic feat doesn't stack. It merely removes the -2 penalty. Yay errata. |

| Zousha_Omenohu06-27-07, 11:57 PM | My question is, why does he need such a big weapon in the first place. I would think that such a weapon would look ridiculous. Frankly, it sounds like he's going to draw accusations of "overcompensating" (I have no idea what the phrase means, but I know that it's usually used when discussing PCs with ridiculously sized weapons). |

| Roivas06-28-07, 12:22 AM | I had a player in an epic game who tried the exact same thing, without the brilliant energy thing. I allowed him to wield a huge weapon with a -2 penalty that was easily compensated by his greater weapon focus. He could dish out nearly 200 points of damage a round if he got his whole full attack off. However I made several things clear when he got this weapon; it did not increase his reach in combat, the sword needed a portable hole for itself and the handle still stuck out with some of the blade, and it could never be quick drawn reguardless of feats. The only one he protested was the lack of reach claiming it didn't make sense that a 28ft blade couldn't hit someone 10ft away. I assured him that the weapon could if it weren't being wielded by such a small creature. The blade needs to be swung very quickly to bite into the flesh of an armored foe and due to the weapon's size it was impossible for him to even threaten a square outside his reach. Doesn't sound realistic? Well neither does using a weapon twice your own size. But if the rules state that the feats don't stack, which I can understand, I would advise not letting them. But who would want to wield such a massive blade when a longsword that hits 80% of the time and can disarm, sunder, trip, and is far more plausible/cool lookin' is right there? Maybe I just favor longswords and greatswords because I'm more the low level playing type. |
| Phantom Reaper06-28-07, 02:08 AM | Then I suppose that when he is eligible to take that feat then he can have his huge greatsword but he still can't use it now and will never be able to wield one larger than huge. Edit: Unless he somehow makes himself larger. Theres a character idea. What if he carries a giant sword around that he is unable to use unless he cast a spell of some sort which makes him much larger. And when he is normal size and cannot transform he has only a dagger to work with. Would be great if you ask me. |
| Unholy_King06-28-07, 02:47 AM | Something that always bothered me about people who want to use larger weapons... Player 1: Alright, time to divide the treasure. Player 2: I want any large weapons! DM: Sorry, the bandits only had medium weapons... Player 1: Sweet! A +2 longsword! Player 2: *Sighs and slings his MW Large Greatsword over his back* |

YAY TEAMWORK! I like taking monkey grip for aesthetic reasons. I've only had one character use it though. |
| Raymond_Luxury_Yacht06-28-07, 11:24 AM | Thats what I thought but I wasn't going to argue without the book in front of me to back me up. The book's wording allows you to use a weapon one size larger than you with no penalty or a weapon two sizes larger with a -2 penalty. It got changed in the errata. |

I like taking monkey grip for aesthetic reasons. I've only had one character use it though. So, you swap a +2 sword to enchant a different sword with +1? And what if player 1 wasn't a wizard? What does the Large-wielder do if later on no one can enchant weapons that high? |

| Sorcen_Anenooata06-28-07, 12:21 PM | Forgive me for stepping in on a stats conversation but I feel I have to say this. My brother is a little over five foot tall and wields a 23 foot tree as his training sword when we spar in our front yard. My point is that you can effectively use this gargantuan greatsword as a weapon, especially if your nine foot tall. I dont have the stats knowledge to be able to tell you how my brother would transfer over to using 23 foot swords when he has more of a theif's build but I'll leave that up to you guys. |
| MagickHobo06-28-07, 02:15 PM | *snigger* I know, downright Freudian, ain't it :P Cept' that it's a hammer. |
| foxtail06-28-07, 02:33 PM | My question is, why does he need such a big weapon in the first place. I would think that such a weapon would look ridiculous. Frankly, it sounds like he's going to draw accusations of "overcompensating" (I have no idea what the phrase means, but I know that it's usually used when discussing PCs with ridiculously sized weapons). Just throw the sizing enhancement on there. Keep it small enough to fit in a dagger sheath, until someone's unlucky enough to pick a fight with the "lightly-armed" warrior. "You call that a knife...?" |
| Sim_antix06-28-07, 02:47 PM | The book's wording allows you to use a weapon one size larger than you with no penalty or a weapon two sizes larger with a -2 penalty. It got changed in the errata. Ahhh I see, go errata then I guess, lol |
| Disciple_of_Salsa07-20-07, 10:18 PM | The reason for the giant weapon is... When looking at the picture of the soul knife in the expanded psionic handbook, my player said "thats a awesome knife!" I said "That's not a knife, This is a knife!" in my best southern accent and pointed at the huge sword the psionic warrior is hauling around in his picture. Yeah, and he is a psionic warrior, so his power of choice is expand self or something like that. That power grows your weapons with you, so he sword gets very, very, big. |
| CeilingNinja07-20-07, 10:21 PM | I had a PC who played a Mage of the Unseen Hand, and swung around a Gargantuan (IIRC) Greatsword, it was awesome, but there were so many rules I had to do with it that made it kind of picky to use correctly. |
| Nytmare07-21-07, 12:39 AM | I said "That's not a knife, This is a knife!" in my best southern accent Australian accent. [EDIT] Also: If he's in a square NEXT to a wall he shouldn't get any kind of penalty. You don't fill an entire 5' space, you operate in it. If on the other hand he were in a square that had a wall running through it I'd consider using the squeezing rules (-4 to attacks). |
| IceFractal07-21-07, 02:02 AM | Admittedly, a 32' long sword does seem fairly ridiculous for a Medium-sized wielder. Perhaps the upsizing doesn't all go toward length - it somewhat goes toward width and weight. So he'd be wielding more like an 8' long sword which is twice as wide as normal, and twice as heavy as it looks. Still ridiculous, but at least it fits inside the room. Oh, and Sorcen_Anenooata - Could that be a comment on all the people who suddenly turn out to be 7th degree kendo masters and certified historical weapon experts when a discussion on weaponry shows up? ;) Actually, this could make an interesting adversary - a slight-figured aristocratic type in expensive clothes that challenges them to a duel. He's carrying what appears to be an ornamental sword-cane - then in one motion he pulls out and slams down this huge, ridiculous sword - something like the Soul Edge*, and starts smashing through walls and throwing people across the room. http://webzoom.freewebs.com/norstar1/14-1185.jpg |
