| Empress_of_Death10-16-06, 01:46 PM | Does anyone know if there is a core class or a prestige class that is similar to real life voo-doo. I have a player who is very excited by the possibility. If anyone knows let me know where I can find the rules on such a class other wise we will have to create one.:D Thanks!! |
| Another_Poet10-16-06, 02:04 PM | What do you mean by Voodoo like class? The character channels spirits and is temporarily able to use their spell-like abilities? Would the channeling be arcane, divine, or something altogether new? ap |
| Azezel10-16-06, 02:06 PM | Chances are your friend wouldn't know real life voodoo (or any of it's half dozen other spellings) if she tripped over it - either way - the closest you're likely to get is the Spirit Shaman class from the Complete Divine - which is not very close... |
| Raiden Drake10-16-06, 02:24 PM | I suppose you mind like what people say about voodoo, dolls, chicken feathers, blood and stuff.... there's nothing like that, but the binder or the shadowcaster of the ToM are similar, maybe multi-classing binder and shadow caster you get what you are looking for... |
| Cifer10-16-06, 02:30 PM | Well... incarnum totemists have a certain possession aspect that could be reinterpreted (Soulmelds as aspects of loas). The curses-business is best handled by the hexblade. I guess that would be the two most "famous" aspects of voodoo. |
| Mecha_Pope10-16-06, 02:45 PM | He probibly wants to do whe whole "poking needles in dolls to hurt folks" thing. I got nuttin' |
| Millennium10-16-06, 02:53 PM | Assuming you're talking about the faith, then tor the most part, all you'd need is to flavor up a basic cleric. You're worshipping a pantheon rather than a single patron, but that has basically no mechanical effect in and of itself (there are a few PrCs that require a specific patron, but odds are you're not interested in those). Depending on personal taste, you could also adapt a druid or a favored soul to the task pretty easily. The rest is just flavor. If, on the other hand, you're talking about sympathetic magic, try searching on that term. There are a couple of systems out there that you could try. |
| Goon_for_Hire10-16-06, 10:53 PM | I agree that the Spirit Shaman is probably one of the best options, it can easily be flavoured for Voudoun. Call the 'spirit animal' a 'Mait'tete' (and possibly anthropomorphize it) use a cane or piece of clothing for a Divine Focus, and describe spells in terms of drawing veves in the soil with said cane or pinning gris-gris on the target of a spell. Consider messing with the spell list a bit: spells like rage and heroism probably quite suitable, as the spells let the shaman be 'ridden' by their Mait'tete. Animate dead is a great one to feed the stereotypes of the Zombie-making houngan of Baron Ghede. Mostly flavouring a spellcaster with Voudoun is not that different from flavouring a caster to any other real-life occult system, just bone up on your terms and really basic concepts, then figure out what minor changes can be made to the class to reflect it. The rest is role-playing. |

| Arcen10-16-06, 11:50 PM | Take a look at the Dread Witch from Heroes of Horror. That might work. |
| Greg K10-17-06, 12:59 AM | Spirit Shaman or Green Ronin's Shaman's Handbook. The latter has its own Shaman class, discusses voodo as a shamanic tradition, and has one or two voodo related prcs. I will not have access to my copy of the Shaman's Handbook until tomorrow, but I will try and post more then. |

I concur - the Spirit Shaman is close enough in the fluff and in the nature-oriented flavour of the spells. Voodoo is effectively an evolved form of West African shamanism anyway ... |
| Borne Of Hate10-17-06, 11:36 AM | This is just one of the many reasons why I play core only. People end up frustrated and upset because something that they want to play isnt in the rules. The spirit of DnD is clouded by New classes, PrCs and feats Here is what I say: be a sorcerer. Take all the spells that harm others such as touch of idiocy, ray of enfeeblement, ray of exhaustion, bestow curse, etc etc. and then change your material components from bat guano to chicken feet. Role Play dont Rule Play |
| Malus Black10-17-06, 02:31 PM | There's always the Voodan class in the Ravenloft supplement Dark Tales and Disturbing Legends (which, incidentally, is an excellent book in its own right). It's a very well-done and unique class, with a neat take on traditional voodoo. |
| On_the_wings_of_TPK10-17-06, 02:48 PM | He has no idea what you just said. Aww all thoughs big words confusing you? Here, I'll clarify. Rewrite the flavour of the spirt shaman clas in the CD, so that it fits better, and then call it a Voodoo person. I actually recomend goign cleric/wizard focusing on illusion, and necromancie. PrC into theugre, or true necromancer. |
| Cifer10-17-06, 04:28 PM | The spirit of DnD is clouded by New classes, PrCs and feats I wonder what "the spirit of D&D" is. By the way, why do you play core? You could play with only the iconic four and reflavour them! Role Play dont Rule Play What about "Use the extensive rule play WotC provides to enhance your fun time roleplaying"? Ah, guess it doesn't roll off the tongue that well. |

| tsuyoshikentsu10-17-06, 08:49 PM | Oh, for crying out LOUD! This place is worse than Barrens Chat! I second the Ravenloft Voodan. I don't claim to know much about vodoun, but it seems to be a fairly good representation. |
| Empress_of_Death10-17-06, 11:23 PM | Thank you everyone, I didn't even think to check my Ravenloft books. All the ideas were good I will look them all over.;) |
| Empress_of_Death10-17-06, 11:37 PM | Well I looked in my Dark Tales and Disturbing Legends, and the Voodan is utterly perfect. Thank you for all the suggestions!:D Ishould have known it was there. |
| Sereno10-18-06, 01:15 PM | Oh, and definitely watch "the Serpent and the Rainbow" a few times, just to get into the mood.... :) |
| tryco10-18-06, 02:46 PM | i've got the class "voodoo priest" contact me if you want it. |
| krazykelc10-18-06, 09:35 PM | i once played a sorceress who was into the whole voodoo thing and had use magic device- thought she was a cleric. everytime she used her cure wand (a skull with brown powder that flew out) she'd shake it and sing a praise of some voodouan spirit. |
| FeceMan10-18-06, 09:56 PM | Oh, for crying out LOUD! This place is worse than Barrens Chat! What server and faction, nub? |
| Empress_of_Death10-19-06, 05:11 PM | I would like to see your voodoo priest. |
| antsterr10-19-06, 05:29 PM | Oh, for crying out LOUD! This place is worse than Barrens Chat! :heehee I agree that either a cleric or sorcerer would make a fine voodoo character, it just takes a little flavour to make it fit, not new rules. I'm also a fan of the core classes, I'm ok with new classes but so many are just wizards or cross class fighters in disguise. |
| UltimateReality10-19-06, 06:04 PM | Aww all thoughs big words confusing you? Unless I'm mistaken, the dig was actually meant to imply the OP wouldn't know real Voudoun (as opposed to Hollywood Voodoo) if it hit him/her in the face. |
| FeceMan10-20-06, 12:48 AM | Unless I'm mistaken, the dig was actually meant to imply the OP wouldn't know real Voudoun (as opposed to Hollywood Voodoo) if it hit him/her in the face. That is precisely what it was, but our winged poster did not discern this. |
