| Evenglare07-03-07, 05:49 AM | How does one go about making a staff that can cast a level 3 spell 1/day. How much would it cost, and what is the creation formula. I looked in the dmg , but the only thing i could find is charges per day.... and it says under base price adjustment "Divide by (5 divided by charges per day)". That in the parenthesis is confusing to me. And with that leads me to another question, how much would it take to add another spell to the said staff .. say for instance a level 1 spell that can be cast 5/day. |

You must confront the price with similar items (items with similar power) to see if the price fit good, or must be adjusted |

You must confront the price with similar items (items with similar power) to see if the price fit good, or must be adjustedThat being said, the guidelines are usually appropriate for most custom items. It's the at-will stuff and always-on stuff that can be unbalanced if it's not straight modifiers. See the Sword of True Striking, for instance. On topic...the other spell can be added with similar pricing measures. As you're putting multiple "similar abilities" (spells that can be separately cast, in this case) on the item, there is no price increase by the guidelines. ... Actually, I'd go further and say that custom magic items should be compared to similar items that people will actually use. The Ring of Djinni Calling has a price of 125K gp, but that doesn't mean that it's worth that much to yank in a djinni for an hour per day. Spell resistance on armor is priced as incremental +1 bonuses, but that doesn't mean that it's worth that much to gain negligible SR for your level. (There are exceptions in the case of broken stuff; neither the Thought Bottle nor the Candle of Invocation should be used as balance standards.) |
| Evenglare07-03-07, 04:22 PM | thanks. That clears some stuff up i have a couple more questions though. Where does the 5 even come from, and does that mean that someone couple put wish on an item , make it be caste 300 million times a day and almost make the item 0 cost? |
| Karui_Kage07-03-07, 04:33 PM | "Divide by (5 divided by charges per day)" means that if you took a spell, regardless of level, and gave it 5000 charges per day, then it would be: 5/5000 = 1/1000 or 0.001 The base price would then be divided by that, or multiplied by 1000 times. Assume a 1st level spell with a 1st level caster. Base cost is 1800. 1800/0.001 = 1800*1000 = 1,800,000 Of course, at this point, you're better off making something at will. |
| Evenglare07-03-07, 04:37 PM | OHHH okay, i should have recognized that!!! haha, im going into diff eq .. wow, i should have gotten that, i feel like an idiot hahahah. Thanks so much guys. |
| Leilond07-03-07, 04:38 PM | EDIT ok, you god it ;) P.S. Remember to be carefully with items created this way. It doesn't work well with some spells Take particular attention on this spell when used to create "continuous items" - Arcane spells with "personal" range (like shield) - Spells that last one single action (like true strike) Those spells are usually the most "powerfull" if you put them in a continuos item, and can end in a possible too powerfull items, with particular attention to the second spell type It doesn't mean it always happens, only that you've to care about it ;) |
