A door that won't open up. 9 times out of 10, PCs will try to break a glass. When they break first one, room fills with acid dealing a bit damage each round. If they are like 1st or 2nd level, three points sounds good. When the second glass is broken, the acid is mixed with another substance and deals every round less damage. (2 on the 1st, 1 on the 2nd, then negated) Then the room is naturally full of liquid and they need to avoid drowning untill they realize to try out the door (which can now be opened) |

You can provide lots of cool flavor text like, "The steaming bile of the black dragon sprays forth on your character, burning his flesh and causing a cry of pain to erupt from his tight-clenched lips." Within the context of the game rules, acid damage does not result in any particular impairment, thus no blinding effects, permanent scarring (other than for fluff), reduction in Charisma (which is based more on personality than looks anyway), etc. On the other hand, players often have a greater visceral reaction to acid than many other types of damage, even if the net difference is in the flavor text. Just don't go to the well too often, or your players will start readying spells of protection from elements (acid) on a regular basis. |

When the PC's try to open the door to the alchemist's safe without checking it a shatter spell is activated that breaks all the glass in the room causing splash damage to just about everyone and alerting the alchemist. |
