| burnt_to_crisp06-30-06, 02:20 PM | i'm trying to get action points worked into our new game, but my players arn't too keen on the idea... they claim it doesn't make sense RP wise or logically wise, i tried to explain to them that it's to make a more heroic atmosphere, to prevent they're untimly demise with the first roll of a natural 1, just for plain fun and that not everything has to make sense but they didn't want to listen, they said they would aprove if i came up with a reason for why the action points exist (nothing world-changing though...) but i can't come up with anything... care to give me a hand? |
| Tormsskull06-30-06, 02:25 PM | I'm not familiar with action points, are they built like force points from the star wars RPG? That being that you use one and then you add a certain # of d6's to a d20 roll. If so, tell them it is like tapping into your inner power. If their is a task that you feel that you just HAVE to complete, you channel all of your energy and devotion towards it and that can sometimes have a dramatically increased effect. Tell them that story of the mother who lifted a car up to save her son when she was in fear of him being hurt. However, if your PCs really aren't interested in them, why do they have to be in the game? |
| HermitIX06-30-06, 02:26 PM | there are feats the require action points. now that they have a pool of action points they have acsess to these feats. also point out that they dont have to use there action points if they dont want to. but the option is now there. ulitamtely if they dont want them you cant force them to use them. but at -9 hit points with only a 10% chance of stablizing its hard to remember why action points are a bad idea. |
| Leilond06-30-06, 02:26 PM | Why do you want to add things that players do not want? Our DM work is to create fun... more fun the players have the more fun we have. By the way Try to call them "Inner strenght points", those strenght that everyone (normal people too) can call to obtain straordinary results. Like the Mother that for a second have a HUGE strenght to save his baby under that heavy table or the like Do not call them "action points" because that name is a "mechanic" one and do not look to stay well with the role playing idea of your players Inner strenght points Inner power points Straordinary power points Exceptional activity points Or something like |
| Arganis06-30-06, 02:31 PM | Well, in my campaigns, I do not skimp on NPC class levels. Many of my NPCs are decent-level PC-classed individuals, such that the PCs do not overshadow everyone at any given time. Therefore in my campaign, Action Points are the one advantage that they get that no one else does. Action Points make them heroes. Action points represent gritting your teeth and going that extra mile in the scene where it is really time to out-do yourself. You know, when you've GOT to trip the monster before he gets to your friend, or you've GOT to stabilize at the brink of death. Although I do not allow spending them to gain additional class ability usage. That's kinda too much for me. APs are loosely equated to other similar systems. The best of which I believe was Shadowrun's Karma. By spending a Karma point, you could do something phenomenal. I had a player who never used his action points because he didn't really see the point. I couldn't really convince him to do so, but he was annoying in many other, more important ways than that, so I didn't really bother. |
| Tormsskull06-30-06, 02:31 PM | Like the Mother that for a second have a HUGE strenght to save his baby under that heavy table No. It was a car. I'm sure that's the only time it ever happened. Plus, a mother saving his baby reminds me of the movie Enemy Mind. |
| Arganis06-30-06, 02:33 PM | Emotional Activity points. Hee hee. |
| burnt_to_crisp06-30-06, 02:39 PM | ok, i can try that, thanks... i hope they'll accept, i always wanted to try the action points in-game, a few friends of mine told me it's fun... don't get me wrong, i'm not pushing it on them, they just want an RP "excuse" for them instead of it being just a rules thing... |
| Yami06-30-06, 02:40 PM | Adrenaline points? Adrenaline gives you the boost to lift that car and save the child, it jolts people out of near comas, etc. with a shot to the heart when poisoned or having a potentially fatal allergic reaction. Seems reasonable. :) |
| (Psi)SeveredHead06-30-06, 02:41 PM | It's making "that last final, desperate effort". But if for some reason they don't want them, don't force the issue. |
| Dan Hemmens06-30-06, 06:19 PM | The alternative option would be to play them at their own game, and to remove from your game anything which doesn't make logical sense in character. Like XP. |
