So, im bout to start up a Hobgoblin adventure with 2 gesalt players. I had planned to work in a section where they could choose to have (most likely) the half-fiend template added. I was gonna have them trade a class level to make the change, but as they are gesalts should i have them trade both of their classes for it?

Whadda ya think? anybody ever tried this?

PS: Also taking suggestions for hooks and encounter ideas.:D

Level adjustments don't play nice with gestalts. The biggest downsides of templates are that you miss out on HP, skills, saves, and BAB, so I don't think you can just take away one class per level since they will still have some HP, skills, etc. from the other one.

At the same time the +4 of the template is +4 non-gestalt levels. It is probably someplace around +2 or +3 for gestalt levels (both classes).

If both players choose to take it, it won't be too bad since they will still be balanced in regard to each other. That lets you figure out just how powerful it is through trial and error (which you are doing anyway with the gestalt levels, I'm sure).

I think the best solution is probably to have a cost associated with it (either a level or two, both classes), but only give them the template if both are going to take it. Give them the chance to make that decision in-game and you give them the opportunity for some interesting roleplaying.

i guess i didnt realize it was +4 LA(we pass around our books and i dont have it atm) Ok,so lets say b/c they are gesalts im gonna "charge" them 2 actual levels(4 gesalt levels), how would it work. i dont want to take away exp, maybe they need to get used to the new changes so dont really advance for a few sessions.

also i forgot to mention, they will have to make Fort and Will saves to stave off ill effects and insanity. i figure chance for failure is a must and the results are their own hook!
