I'm struggling to develope an idea I have into a full adventure. The party will consist of gestalt characters. A goatfolk hex-blade/rogue (probably will take leadership) and a fire hobgoblin wu jen/monk. [ECL 16] I'd like to put a horror spin on the adventure, even though the players are leaning towards evil (as these guys tend to do). They, of course, must fufill this duty (probably to remove the status of exile placed on the goatfolk), so they will be motivated to ge involved.

I have an idea for a halfling caravan that acts as a wandering circus as a front for some evil association. Intermingled amongst these carnies are human children, which perform chores listlessly. These halflings answer to a joystealer (MMIII) with shadowcaster levels (and possible the shadow or dark template?) who is accompanied by a couple skiurids (MMIII).

I think I will create halflings with abberation blood feats (LoM). A freak show turned bad or something like that. They can become an encouter, but that only leaves me with two.

Any help would be appreciated.

First off, Joystealers and Skiurids are in MMIV, not MMIII :P

A joystealer could certainly use a wandering circus as a mean to feed on emotions, but I barely see an evil organisation under all this. Beside, you got to be careful on what does your evil organisation. Should a circus passes in town, and the next morning a few children are missing, it's easy to do 2+2=4. And a wandering circus is not that difficult to find. Unless it travels via the plane of shadow...

And don't make it too much of a freak show, you still want some spectators! :) At worse, perhaps could you have some freak (using willing difformities from BovD), using Disguise Self to look like a clown, or simply wearing a mask.

Also, see this article (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031110x)for some idea about a Shadow-bound caravan...

Thanks, I can't believe I was wrong about my MM. What kind of DM am I? Not to mention I spent part of that day reading that book. I'll take a coser look at the link, but the rest helped me formulate this idea, if it is a no go, then I'll make it a isolated encounter.

The joystealer shadowcaster has convinced (decieved) an unscurpulous halfling carnival to undertake a pilgramage to the Plane of Shadow, in order to allow her sisters (dark/shadow template?) through. The festival reflects on holiday based around a day of chaos in the midst of the law god's dominance (i.e.: His season, Autum). Are there alternative means to an evil way of opening such a portal than "blood sacrifice"?

The children can be kidnapped from barbarian tribes along the way to tie the joystealer over. Once she gets the portal open, she can turn on the carnival and wreak havoc on the town with less concern than before. Maybe she makes a deal with the leader to gant him shadow power if he can open the portal?

Is that better? Als,o should the joystealer be gesalt sinc the players are? Do gestalt levels encompass racial hit dice?
