| Lord Psynister05-24-04, 12:00 AM | I'm thinking that I might have one of my groups run into the WoO NPC group while they're getting attacked by flying monkeys. Wizard of Oz NPCs: I've suddenly got a vision of a Paladin (The Tin-Man), Druid (Cowardly Lion), ummm....a Straw Golem? (Scarecrow), and....a noble? (Dorothy) Maybe give the paladin some cursed armor that makes him lose his action at random times (rust). Straw Golem has the cursed Boots of Grease. Druid wears a cursed Cowardly Crown that gives a -8 penalty to saves vs. Fear. And Dorothy would have the Ruby Red Slippers of Teleportation, cursed with an Attract Monster ability. Q1: Anybody know of any flying monkeys I could use for a Wizard of Oz-type encounter? Or feel like whipping some up for me? Q2: What class/race would you suggest for the Scarecrow? Q3: What about a class for Dorothy? Q4: What do you think of the idea itself? Note: Questions 2 & 3 are more like things I'm just wondering, rather than things I'd need to know for the adventure. |
| Stealthy Paladin05-24-04, 12:21 AM | I dont think players would want to play a campaign with cursed stuff... except the shoes are cool. As a player, I want to at least feel powerful, and play a non-linear game... maybe use the outside elements of the game, like the yellow path and the mysterious wizard and the flying orcs... but the characters should not be changed. My opinion anyway... |
| Lord Psynister05-24-04, 12:25 AM | I'm not wanting to have the players be the WoO characters, I want them to just run into them and rescue them from the army of flying monkies, and then maybe go after the Wicked Witch. I don't plan on the characters ever getting the magic(cursed) items. I just put them there so that there would be a reason for each of WoO NPCs they run into to have the traits that they did in the movie. |
| Shadowmagyk05-24-04, 01:32 AM | My wife ran a fairy tale campaign. It was great. We were all from different lands, and were summoned to destroy the evil that was ravaging each land. The first land was "Little Red Riding Hood." Of course, werewolves were the evil. Next, we went to Wonderland to fight the Jabberwocky (many-headed Hydra). After that, we went to Never-Never land (sea adventure with pirates). Then we went to Gulliver's travels (giants for the big people, and nixies/sprites for the little people). Finally, we went to Oz to face the Wizard of OZ, who orchestrated the entire evil corruption. He was also a Lich. It was great. As for the PCs being WoO characters, it will never fly. You could use the area, and have them meet the characters, but that should probably be the extent. |

That's just how they're going to end up meeting. The PCs are just going to meet with the WoO characters, and save them from the Flying Monkey-Men. The PCs can be whatever race/class they want. |
| Ankalagon05-24-04, 06:53 AM | Whatever as long as you play Pimk Floyd Dark Side of the Moon. It fits perfectly as background music to the WoO. |
| Nightshade2205-24-04, 07:20 AM | you forgot toto! :D seroiously, just give the monkeys in the MM a fly speed and possibly warrior levels. The scarecrow could be a modified wicker man (fiend folio). |
| Lord Psynister05-24-04, 08:09 PM | What about the rest of you, guys? The scarecrow is the main thing I can't quite figure out. The Wicker Man mentioned earlier looks like he might work, but I don't have the Fiend Folio, so I've got no clue what his stats are. Does anybody know of a Scarecrow-brought-to-life monster? Or got some stats for a Straw Golem? What about your ideas on the flying monkeys? The MM Monkey is a Tiny creature, so they really kinda suck. Baboons are medium creatures, so I was thinking about working with them, but their CR is 1/2, so it would only take four of them to be a match for the level 2 PCs. Apes are a bit too strong for going up against right now, though I might have them sent after the party once they've gained a few levels, and have some stronger power behind the wicked witch that they have to take care of then. |
| Lord Psynister05-25-04, 01:53 AM | How about I get some oppinions on what I've come up with then: Flying Monkey (Baboon) Size: Medium HP: 5 Init: +2 (Dex) Speed: 30 ft, 40 ft Flying (Poor) AC: 15 (+2 Dex, +1 Natural, +2 Leather) Attack: +2 Shortsword 1d6 Fort/Ref/Will: 3/4/1 Skills: Listen +5, Spot +5 CR: 1/2 Anybody happen to know if the flying monkey's had a name? Flying Monkey Leader (Ape) Size: Large HP: 26 Init: +2 Speed: 30 ft, 40 ft Flying (Poor) AC: 17 (-1 Size, +2 Dex, +3 Natural, +3 Studded Leather) Attacks: +7 Claws (x2) 1d6+5, +2 Bite 1d6+2 Fort/Ref/Will: 6/6/2 Skills: Listen +6, Spot +6 CR: 2 CRs look right to you? |
| Salla05-25-04, 11:28 AM | Actually, if you have stats for a regular monkey (or possibly move up to apes if you want to make them more dangerous), you could put the Winged template from Savage Species on 'em. |
| Obsidianjaerc05-25-04, 04:47 PM | I actually ran a series campaigns set in Oz and I have to say it as quite a little bit of fun. Set in the land of The Famous Forty and with occasional HACC (http://members.cox.net/cruentidei/oz/hacc/hacc.html)validated book details we had a grand time. Every so often I also used HIRCC (http://people.musc.edu/~adelmaas/HIRCC.html) Oz stuff. Yes I was a huge Oz fan and yes that is why I used it as a campaign world for a few years. I definitly recommend reading the Famous 40 (those books written by Baum, Thompson, and Neil) and going to The Royal Historical Mainline Timeline (http://www.timelineuniverse.net/Oz/Mainlinetimeline.htm) for a far more definitive and easier to use (with many links) version of the HACC and HIRCC combined. As for the flying monkies I'll have to find the monster floppy disk that contains them. I'll post soon. P.P.S Just remembered the book The Flying Monkies of Oz by Dennis Anfuso might help as source material for them. Also the ruby slippers give you control (3 wishes actually) of the flying monkies. Q1 See above Q2 I used my class Inquisitive Girl (made specifily for Oz) but a rouge work work fine. Q3 Made a special race for Scarecrow. Take Human give fire vunrabilty. Special Ability to put himself back together again unless dealt damage by fire as long as there is straw nearby. Q4 EXCELLENT! Remember the Cowardly Lion becomes the Courageous Lion. Also remember that all animals in Oz (an surounding countries) can talk whether in beast or human tounge. All animals also have at least human intelligence. Thus The C. Lion is just a smart lion with a ton of HD added, Large size and the ability to speak. Tin Man is definitly not a paladin but rather a fighter. (Start him with a few levels of expert lumberjack if you must). He is of course a special creature too of which only two exsist (himself and the tin soldier). A man who was slowly converted to metal by the person in the woods whose name I forgot as he accidently chopped himself (that being a curse from the Wicked Witch of the West). This was possible becasue no one can die by accident in Oz. It is either on purpose of becasue of fate. Folks can also never die of old age and even a planned death usually doesnt work , in that the person doesnt usually die. :) Toto is just a smart talking dog. P.S. I used a highly modified version of 3e D&D. Modified in that i totally changed the magic system and moster creation rules and put in several houserules which include many many feats and some class variation. Please, please, please if you have any questions of any sort (oz related) ask away and 90% says I can answer. |
| Lord Psynister05-25-04, 06:05 PM | Thanks for the info and links there, OJ. I'll give them a look when I've got a bit more time to actually read through them. Thanks for the suggestions there too! How's the weather in SLC? It's been a few months since the last time I was there. |
