My groups last adventure was to defend a town against some ogres that apeared in the mist. The ogres had recently been controled by a cabal of kobold sorcerors. Each ogre, when raiding, had a kobold straped to his back casting obscuring mist, sleep and/or magic misslie. This made for hard encounters, 2 ogres move forward, throw javlins one magic misslie and an obsucring mist so party can't attack them.

Anyway, that was how they got to level 3, any advice on a idea for a multisesion adventure for them to get to level 4? weird monster? this is an arcane heavy party, because that's what i wanted to run, i want to see some potent mages carve out a niche in the world. Any help would be great.

Well you could introduce the next BBEG, maybe the kobolds were under the command of a Orge Mage (this guy is waay beyond the party currently, but this will give them time to hate him). He might send a kobold rogue or a orge rogue (me sneeky, heehee) after the party for ruining his plans. If the party has any personal connections with some NPC's or organization he may take one captive to distract them, while he completes another of his devious plans. Having the PC's harassed by this BBEG will really get the PC's to hate him. Hence making the victory over him that much more satisfying when the time comes. Also if they forget that he regenerates, he can make an appearance later. :devil

As for good low-level encounters and hooks.

-One worg riden by a goblin warrior 3 (Only CR 1) with three other goblins. Its an ECL 4. The PC's are hired to guard a caravan and a small band of goblin bandits attack.

-The farmers in town keeping finding sink holes in their fields, which are destroying their crops. If the PC's inverstigate they find that Ankhegs are burrowing through the fields.

-a young dragon seeks to make a name for itself by attacking the PC's that just saved the town it lairs near. If it sees that it can beat the PC's easily it returns without killing them, "Saying they arn't worth of his power." or if he is close to dieing runs back to his cave.
