| Legolas Greenleaf10-16-04, 04:23 PM | I was wondering if any of you could help me come up with a few adventure ideas. I'm just wanting something different, rather than running the same old dungeon crawl. Something that will have a good story to it. This is going to take place in a city with 70,000 people, so I know there are many things a person could do. I'm just not good at coming up with good story type adventures. Thanks for the help. Legolas Greenleaf |

For the big lines, in city like that, you have many factions that war agaisnt each other, most of the time on the political arena, but sometime the get it to the street or attack each other with secret raids. You could get the PCs involved with a proeminent thief guild, either as allies or enemies. Their is also the good 'ol dungeon crawl in the sewers when you need a change of pace. If you want something more epic, you could get your city official getting abducted by a race of shapechanger/demon/monster whatever and replaced by their own number in a scheme to control the region. The PCs have to uncover the plot and put an end to it. |
| Ricohard_Draconis10-16-04, 05:26 PM | depends on what level your players are to start with and how long your running for 1st: small personal plots, the neighbourhood is being threatened by a gang who are making the shopkeepers pay protection money. mid level: the gang is actually being run by a political faction in an attempt to unlawfully overthrow the just and benevolent government. high level: the political power is in league with a rival nation who, having failed to take power by subterfuge try a more direct approach. |

How about the pc hear rumors in a pub that a person working for one of the city rich, or a wizard is not acting the same, the person talking about his master saw the wizard change in to someone else they din't know. OR the wizard was seen talking to red wizards or shade's and bowed to them while getting orders from them. maybe join the local force in the city and see what happens in the city during their watch. Have the pc get paid to watch some thing in the ware house distric, or guarding somthing inside the ware house. Have the pc become friends with a npc who stole somthing vauleable and hide it on one of the pc or told the pc where it was before the npc was killed. the pc would have to wrestle with their feelings about what to do if the item was taken from a underground temple of evil, depending on what the city is like. Evil ruled or good rule or inbetween ruled, the pc would have to tell the authorites and it would make them look bad to them, knowing about the temple. The authority would want to know more, you could have the pc being watched by the temple members, and even have attempts to kill them. You could have the pc get charged with a crime because a doppleganger took the persona of one of the pc. Then have the pc try to find the doppleganger and their freinds they meet along the way. Have the pc find an npc that was attacked in an alley and then have the pc help the npc to get back their items that were stoled. Have the pc joind a delery service for part time work or start their own company, they go to an old tower in the city and meet an old wizard say named Redwind. the old wizard gives them a wrapped book to delever to a nouther mage or person. They go to the address and the buildin is empty, when they go back the old tower is gone. When they ask around about the tower, their told that Redwind tower used to be there but it disappaered one day. After talking to the local mage gild the mages look at the book and want to but it, but if the pc sell the book they get a fractiobn of the value. If the pc say they will think about it, have the wizard tell them to thank about it and come back in two days. The pc have unexpected guset in their rooms trying to take the book (thiefs.) how did they know about the book and what is the book, if it;'s a spell book then have the pc find out what the spells are and more about the book. Have one of the pc disappear, the pc has blood that is needed to make a spell.. It only runs in that family, have the rest of the pc look for the captured pc. this could lead to Red Wizards or cult of the Dragon, it doesn't have to be under ground. The missing pc could be held in the local enclave of the red wizards or the cult of the dragon would have an building they rent or own and use as a front. \ How about having the pc delever something for an alachemist and before they can take it their it gets stolden from under their noises. The alchemist tells then they find the item and take it to where they where told to or they will go to jail. This could lead to the local theifs guild or a lone theif with a specail mark they leave behind. their missing would be to find the theif or theifs guild and where is is now so they stay out of trouble. Have they pc over hear talk of jobs for guards in a busness or local shop, while the owner is away, then have the pc get sleep gas while guarding the shop or sleep liquied put in their drinks. Have something of great vuale taken from the shop. they owner could be in on this or not. Then the pc would have to locate the item taken and return it. It all depends on the pc aliengment and what they will do. If an evil pc campian their could be ideals taken from abouve and turned around to meet the evil pc ideals. If the pc are mostly good then you could keep the ideals as the are. |
| JimmyJustice10-16-04, 07:31 PM | I'm currently running a rather interesting campaign where the PC's have been arrested and now are in jail. This gives them an opportunity to really use problem solving techniques to try and break out. Also not having any armor or weapons, other than at the very most a shank, it puts a whole new twist to things. This is really only suitable for higher level PC's, that is if you ever expect them to escape. for an added twist make the jail or prison be located on an island, which just makes for even more problems trying to escape. Of course it is pretty much essential that you have a rogue or a rogue-like PC in the party. |
| funnymanmike10-16-04, 08:14 PM | How about a Who Dun'it. While the PC's are in town they are looking to make a few extra coins, so they hire themselves out as extra city guards for a few nights. During one of their nights, on a block they were saposed to protect, a Noble was killed. The City guard is holding the PC's responsible and they have to find out who killed the man. The city is holding the body so the PC's can't cast speak with dead. Instead have them interview the Noble's Family, Servants, and anyone the Noble works for. The story should unfold from that. Perhaps the Noble found something disturbing about a business rival and the rival had him killed. Its far from a dungeon crawl, and should get your players thinking CSI by the end of the night |
| novus10-17-04, 10:47 PM | Alot of ideas. I tend toward dropping suttle hints of ancient artifact(s) by way of npc's. Once you get the pc's hooked on the idea of looking for it or them, you start adding other things to the quest. Like wars between thieves or wizard guilds, also looking for said item to gain the upper hand on the rival guild. Although most often the item isn't a true artifact, but is a worthwhile item(s). You can take it anywhere from there. As others have said conspiracy theories, murders, politics, me- myself I like invasions by small groups of rather powerful npc villains to ruin everyone's plans and take the item(s) for themselves and laugh at the pc's afterward. Really it is just a matter of how evil of a DM you want to be. |
