I have, and am soon to run, Sons of Gruumsh.

All the way through the book, for every encounter there is a suggested mini.

I like this idea, I feel that, along with having the adventure already prepaired, which gives me more time to prepaire myself, it should make the adventure run smoother, and be more enjoyable for my players.

So I set out to find the minis I would need.

Most of them are from "Harbinger". That it seems is, "Out of Print". Grrr.

The nice people in a local shop *cough* FanBoy3 *cough*, said, email us the list, and we shall see if anyone has anything on it they will sell.

This is the list:
Human Thug - Harbinger 47/80 (6 of)
Dwarf Axe Fighter - Harbinger 03/80 (2 of)
Dire Wolf - Giants of Legend 25/72 (1 of)
Ogre Zombie - Aberrations 56/60 (1 of)
Troll or Troll Slasher - Harbinger 77/80 or Angelfire 59/60 (1 of)
Wolf, Werewolf or Timber Wolf - Harbinger 37/80, GoL 60/72 or Deathknell 27/60 (2 of)
Half-Orc Fighter - Harbinger 43/80
Wyvern - Aberrations 25/60 (I have a warhammer wyvern I can use for this) (1 of)
* Ogre - Harbinger - 71/80 (1 of)
* Ambush Drake - Deathknell 30/60 (2 of)
* Basilisk - GoL 13/72 (1 of)
* Stalwart Paladin - Dragoneye 8/60 (1 of)
* Soldier of Cormyr - Archfiends 8/60 (1 of)
* Evoker's Aprentice - Harbinger 05/80 (1 of)
* Evermeet Wizard - Archfiends 15/60 (1 of)
* Greycloak Ranger - Archfiends 16/60 (1 of)
* Orc Savage - Deathknell 57/60 (1 of)
* Orc Druid - Dragoneye 57/60 (1 of)
* Human CLeric of Bane - Archfiends 35/60 (1 of)
* Zhentarim fighter - Archfiends 40/60 (1 of)
* Eye of Gruumsh - Dragoneye 51/60 (1 of)
* Orc Archer - Harbinger 72/80 (6 of)
* Orog Warlord - Angelfire 47/60 (1 of)
* Orc Champion - Archfiends 55/60 (1 of)
* Mountain Orc - Aberrations 55/60 (6 of)
* Orc Berserker - Harbinger 73/80 (6 of)
* Orc Brute - GoL 56/72 (6 of)
* Orc Raider - Archfiends 56/60 (6 of)
* Orc Sergeamt - Aerrations 57/60 (1 of)
* Orc Spearfighter - Harbinger 74/80 (6 of)
* Orc Warrior - Harbinger 75/60 (6 of)

In addition to this, I have a Dwarf cleric, Elf Sorceror, Half-Elf wizard, Half-elf rouge and halfling fighter as PCs

My God that's a long list! The Starred entries are in the keep, so are most important.

Ok, so I have a Warhammer orc and goblin army, that I can scavange, but that is like 60 minis. Of being a Wyvern.

I was going to suggest that Wizards make a "Sons of Gruumsh" Minis pack. For that matter a "Fane of the Drow" one would be nice too....etc etc. Nice money spinner.

But with the amount of models needed it would simply be too expensive.

Does anyone else seriously use the minis in adventures?

How do you get enough to make things like this viable?

I have over two hundred metal miniatures, but I've been gaming since Chainmail came out.

Most of the gamers I game with at my FLGS buy a couple boxes of the prepainted plastic miniatures a week, so they each have several shoeboxes full of them. It's kind of surprising to me that the Harbinger set went out of print so soon after the release of the module, though.

I'm not a big fan of minis at all. They look neat, and I've seen tables that were pretty impressive what with all the minis and dioramas and/or computer projections and all, but they generally don't suit my preferred style of play.

Not sure that helps you out at all, unless it frees you up somehow to encourage you to run minis-optional sessions. Not because minis are bad--they aren't--but it'd be a shame if you'd ever decided against running a potentially fun adventure or situation because you didn't have the right chunk of plastic to use. Which may not be an issue for you. In which case feel free to totally ignore me. :)

Good luck with whatever approach you settle on, and good gaming to you and your group!

I use minis for the players.
For the monsters, I use counters. (flat pieces)

Purchasing all of the minis is a marketing scam... if you want to buy them, go for it... personally, I have more important things to spend my money on.
I've found that imagination works wonders.

My group only minis that we have, and improvise for the ones we dont. (We've had several bottlecap ogres) Actually, the lack of minis can really improve a DM's description skills so you could just go half and half.

I use Lego, you can build anything that you want with them and they come with material for building enviroments.

Me too. I superglue them onto pennies so they don't fall over.

Oh hell yes.

This campaign has been running for over half a year, it was only the inclusion of the suggested mimis that gave me the idea.

As I said, I have an orc and goblin warhammer army, so as far as orcs go, I have around 100 hand painted by myself over a few years. It is more the named characters that would be a problem, hence the idea of realeasing a set, but as I say, the number required seems staggering for such a simple module.
