Okay, first I should explain what this thread is all about. I'm just writeing this to tell the story of my groups first campagin. They are still playing the same characters, but the storyline this thread follows has ended. One of my players, the one you will come to know as Wildheart, kept a journal throughout the campagin, and from that, I'm going to write each session for you to read. The group of characters became known as the Fated Circle, because it became common around our table to hear characters mutter "I fear I was fated for this." Okay, so I hope you enjoy. :D

Chapter One: The Finding of the Sword

Our tale begins in the sleepy town of Two Pines, deep in the heart of the western kingdoms. Two Pines rests on the edge of the Gnarlwood, a stones throw from the Running River. Primarily a farming community, the town is of little importance, and has never seen any trouble. It is here that four strangers happen to gather, each for their own reasons, in the tavern room of the old Wanderer's Rest Inn.

It is early in the evening on a warm autumn day, and the tavern is mostly empty, the farmers busy harvesting the finale crop before the first frost. All is silent, save for the poping of the fire and the muted songs of the evening birds outside. Suddenly the tavern door flies open, and in stumbles an elderly man wrapped in a black cloak and leaning heavily on a wooden cane, "Help!" he calls, "Help me please. Bandits have taken my daughter!"

Around the room, four strangers stand to answer the old man's call. Thus Garn, Wildheart, Dobb, and Viera meet for the first time, and agree to lend their talents to the old man's cause. Together they set out from Two Pines, following the old man's directions along the north road until they reach an area where the road dips into a gully and cuts through the Gnarlwood, the spot where the elderly man claimed he was attacked.

As the four adventurer's walk down the road, an arrow trailing a red ribbon suddenly lands at Garn's feet, a clear warning that they should stop. From both sides, men in leather holding short bows emerge, four in all. A fifth man wearing studded leather and carrying a hand axe moves to the center of the road to address the group, "Hand over yer gold and yer silver, an we'll let ye pass. Refuse an ye'll be put to the blade." The threat is clear, and the group ignores it.

Moving almost in unison, the four adventurer's spring into action. Garn knocks a arrow and fires at the leader, catching him in the shoulder. Dobb clutches his holy symbol and calls down the blessings of Orillia on the party. Wildheart moves up the side of the gully and cuts the legs off one unfortunate bandit, before taking an arrow in the back. Viera waves her hands and casts Magic Missile blasting the life from the bandit leader.

In a matter of seconds the rest of the bandits are slain. Dobb removes the arrow from Wildheart's back and heals her wounds, and the group searches the bodies, turning up nothing special. With no sign of the old man's daughter, the four adventurer's decide there must be a hideout somewhere nearby, and proceed to search the woods. An expert in the wild, Wildheart is the first to spot the bandits tracks leading to an old farmhouse on the edge of the Gnarlwood.

Their mission clear, the four adventurer's advance on the farmhouse and break down the front door, surpriseing the bandits within. A mighty battle ensues as bandits rush from every room of the house to attack the four intruders at the door. Arrows fly, steel flashes, and magic sparks as the battle rages, and in the end the four heros emerge triumphant. Battered and bruised they stand atop the bodies of the vanquished.

Searching the house, they make their way into the cellar, only to be confronted by the old man, his cloak discarded in favor of chainmail armor. He explains that he is the true leader of the bandits, and he uses his plea for help to lure people into ambushes. After all, the noble hero types always carry the best loot. The old man then brandishes a heavy halbred and attacks. Low on spells and weakened from the fight with the bandits above, the group is hard pressed to stay alive. Just as hope seems lost, and the old man is about to land the killing blow on Wildheart, one of Garn's arrows pierces his chianmail, plunging deep into his heart.

With the old man defeated, the group searches the cellar for stolen loot, turning up a small fortune in silver and gold. They also discover a fancy looking longsword strapped to the old man's belt. A detection spell reveals strong magic on the sword, but when Gran attempt to draw the blade, his hand is burned by a power shock. The same results when anyone in the group tries to take the blade.

Wrapping the sword in cloth, the four new friends return to Two Pines. They give the gold to the town and keep the silver for themselves. Then, curious about the sword, they agree to travel together to Lorigol, to seek answers at the Midnight Library in the church of Draven, god of magic and knowledge. They use their new found wealth to purchase a wagon and mule, and retire to regain their strength for the journy ahead.

To be continued......
