Hello all.

I have a BBEG that the players may decide to actively chase. I want them to spot him in certain places, and have him fight the party. I do not want him to die until he gets to a certain point, (i.e. the final battle) but I need him to be an annoyance until that point.

Keep in mind this is a relatively high level party (many pc's at 13+, including smart wizard player.)

BBEG can summon undead, use cleric spells. Epic level.

I need some advice on how to have him taunt / fight the party, and then get out, to cause terror at a later date.

EX: They are fighting, BBEG gets to 1/4 or so HP, he escapes, and have pc's have no trace of where he went, sort of thing.

I thought of deity intervention, maybe? Help?

Read up on the subject, and other issues your BBEG may encounter. (http://www.eviloverlord.com/lists/overlord.html)

Firstly, cudos to the evil overlord list. That thing has helped me flesh out smart and realistic villains for many many years.

Secondly, I use plane shift. Though, at this level, the party may be able to follow him [they dont necissarily know what plane he went too though.].

Hope this provokes some new thought.

A Cleric with a True Rez spell.

Works every time. :P

try this, word of recall, or boots of quickened teleport. or contingency teleport. they would never be able to find him.

also, if he ever gets the upper hand, go for the tpk. it's the only way to be sure. :)

Hmm... contingency getaway plans for the epic level cleric with an undead horde vs a bunch of mid-teen lvl pcs...

Step 1) TPK
Step 2) Go to pub

If you're dialing down his power level:

1) Word of Recall
2) Contingency Teleport (for when you just can't get that single action to WoR)
These are your 'get away from PCs free' spells
If he's got some kind of immunity to an energy type or similar, have him teleport *into* that substance (eg, vat of acid), just in case the PCs find a way to follow him.
Just in case the PCs can also survive in that substance, have the BBEG have a Contingency Dimension Door spell to take him to a small 5ft by 5ft 'bubble' in the middle of solid rock at an appropriate distance away, set to go off if the PCs follow the BBEG.

Spell Immunity - Dimesional Anchor
This will help prevent that pesky "Nye nye nye nye nye! No teleporting for you!" smartarse wizard tactic.

'Just in Case'
Your just in case situation should be a scroll of Superior Invisibilty (SC), on the off chance he's in a no teleportation area. You may need to have ranks in Abuse Magic Device if you only have clerical casting.

Moment of Prescience
For all those pesky 'Save or Die/Polymorph/Feeblemind/Insanity/Cluck like a Chicken' spells.

That just leaves the bane of all casters - the antimagic field, to consider.
Possibilities include high hide and move silently plus hide in plain sight (from say, the Dark Creature template (ToM) for getting out of the field before being skewered.
Fast movement speed - get out of there before they can skewer you. Dark template creature also useful here.
I'm sure you can come up with others.
Also, dont forget Contingency - Teleport (When I leave an antimagic field)

There, that should get you started :)
