I posted this in the rules counseling thread and it didn't get any responses in a day, so I'm posting it here where it might get more traffic. I'm in need of an answer since my session is tomorrow night.

I'm going to have a situation where my PCs will come upon a pit trap of sorts while riding horses. I need some advice on how to handle it. I will allow a Reflex save for the horse to see if it avoids falling in to the pit. My question is how I should deal with the PC if the horse fails? The drop is about 10'. Should I have them make a Ride check for a soft fall? This doesn't seem to take into account the fall of 10 extra feet down. Would the horse break the fall? Also, even if the horse does succeed its Reflex save, would I still require the PC to make a Ride check to stay in the saddle?
Thanks for any help on this.

Personally I would give the horses a spot check, (DC dependent on the skill with which the trap is hidden). After all animals have a way of sensing things we humans don't.

> Spot Check Succeeds - Horse stops on a dime, PC makes riding check, (Based on speed of horse), failure means PC's fall over horses head into pit.

> Spot Check Fails - Horse makes reflex save to not fall in.

> Reflex Save - See Spot Check Succeeds.

> Reflex Failed - PC's make riding check DC 20, Failure by 5 or more results in landing with horse on top x2 damage PC Ref Save for 1/2. Failure by less than 5 means normal damage PC Ref save for 1/2, but success means avoided damage.) NOTE: If horse fails initial Ref save, I'd rule the PC's are going in the pit.

Without the books infront of me I can only make a halfassed conclusion here, but the half I present sounds good.

Each horse makes a reflex save or falls in. Each rider makes a Ride check to see if they can get out of the saddle quickly enough to avoid the fall as well (I'm pretty sure quick mounting is in the ride skill description, but I dont know about quick dismount). If they can make the ride check they get a reflex save to avoid it falling in themselves. Everything that fails ends up in the pit and taking damage.
