In an upcoming campaign I'll be starting, the party will begin as part of a thieves' guild in a rather unlawful city. Ideally, from there will spin many great adventures and eventually the party will become embroiled in a major war scenario (via Heroes of Battle).

It came to mind today that I rather like the idea of the thieves' guild they're a part of (they being a draconic dark-elf sword sage (possibly good aligned), a social-oriented scout, a dread necromancer, and a halfling bard) would be an ideal place to run a concept I came up with - a good aligned guild. Basically, the premise is that the head of the guild belongs to a religion that believes in the power of redemption, and so he/she has founded a thieves' guild whereby she encourages her members toward the path of good, but without all the preaching. Basically, she lets them sort of indulge in their less-good attitudes, while steering them towards good by way of their missions and actions.

It intrigues me greatly, but I'm having a devil of a time really figuring out the logistics of appropriate missions. Anyone care to share their thoughts on the matter?

1)Stop bully(s) from causing trouble.2)stop a crooked businessman like a blacksmith who puts on loose horseshoes so he can get more work when they fall off.3)Takeover a business run by an alcoholic and get it running profitably.4)Find a sadist who's been hurting or killing pets.5)Find a job for a working girl who's too old to work.6) guildmaster makes a rule that all thieves must have a cover job based around a craft or profession skill,PCs should maintain a low profile?7)make a lowlife guild for the party to foil?.....RANDOM THOUGHTS.

They go on missions to foil the corrupt government's plans and inner workings, steal from the rich and distribute to the poor, work with their neighborhood (after all the people that live near you know what's going on usually) to protect them from a madman who is raping and killing men/women/children in the area.

Sewer monsters.
Lost child in sewers
Cult in the sewers
Anything in the sewers.
A local butcher is kidnapping and using people meat to sell and it is becoming a local favorite. However, the disappearances are starting to be noticed.

1. Call it an Adventurers Guild

2. Open a public front to accept requests for service.

3. Do not accept evil requests.

It is possible that in the part of the world where this guild is located thievery is accepted as a part of life. As such, stealing isn't necessarily an evil act. Sure, it could be outlawed (after all, letting everyone steal would seriously disrupt society), but it could be that thievery is viewed as an honored profession. Just think of the Paloi from the novels of David Eddings. In their society thieves are highly respected.
