Oompa 09-17-06, 05:24 AM	Well.. i've run some couple adventures for my players now and i alway's used like one or two monsters for a fight.. that ain't so hard to figure out an CR/EL.. Im using 3.0 But now i wanna play them up against more monsters, different situations.. Ive got 6 pc's, lvl 6 each, that would make them ecl 9.. Lets say i want an encounter using an Ogre and his goblin slaves :) ECL 9 gives a mixed pair of CR 8 and CR 6.. Lets say i add 6 fighter levels to the ogre, that would make him an CR 8 creature.. Let's say.. i take 5 goblins (cr 1/4 each) and give them 2 levels of warrior.. making them cr 1 1/4 each goblin and an total of 5 1/4 So now i've got an encounter with a cr 8 ogre an 5 goblins counting for cr 5.. Is this right? Or am i totally wrong now?
MarkB 09-17-06, 07:31 AM	Try this online Encounter Calculator (http://d20srd.org/encounterCalculator.htm) - it's pretty accurate, and takes into account larger parties. It pegs a group of PCs averaging 6th level as equivalent to an average party level of 7.2, rather than 9, which I'd agree with - two extra characters above the standard 4 is not enough to jump APL from 6 to 9.
