My friend invited his sister to play with us, and so far she seems pritty determined to kill me, the DM.
What is the best way to get her to understand that i cannot be killed?
(She's around 14)

Oh, but you can. Your Screen is far from bulletproof. It isn't even really knifeproof.

If you're referring to something else... I'm not entirely sure what you mean. Is she under the impression the DM is supposed to antagonize the players? Just take her aside and try to teach her the ropes of gaming etiquette. Insist you aren't out to get the players, you're on their side; if they slay the dragon and save the princess and make off with the baddie's loot, everyone has a good day. Likewise, if the adventure ends in dismal failure or (worst case scenario) a TPK, no one should be more upset than the DM.

We do a lot of joking around about how many characters each of us have sent to an early grave but when players actually start to believe it's DM vs Players, you have a serious problem.

What exactly is she doing? Trying to off NPCs because she knows you're responsible for them? Does she kill monsters indiscriminately? If the latter, how do you know she just likes to play up the black-and-white nature of D&D morality? Most people (rightly) assume that under the written rules, it's perfectly acceptable to slay monsters and take their worldly belongings. In fact, it's not exactly encouraged but certainly reasonable to kill them for that reason!

Does she want to kill you personally, or does she think the DM has a character that can be killed like the players do? Because if it's the former ...

But seriously (I spelled that wrong, I know), explain to her that you are on the players team, And that you don`t want to kill of the whole party. Also explain that if you wanted to kill of the whole party, your character would be dead by now:P

Create a scenario in which her character will be absent for a part of the adventure and ask if she would like to DM the group for one encounter. (Check with the other PCs before allowing this or inviting her to do this!!!!) You assist her in DMing the encounter. Make sure the encounter has a few of those things that make DMing complicated (terrain modifiers, NPCs with varied Feats and Skills, etc.) Be encouraging to her.

1) She'll realize you aren't out to get her.
2) She'll begin to understand what DMing is all about.
3) She'll have more persepctive that it's not a DM against the PCs scenario.
4) She might catch the DMing bug.
5) If she does have a crush on you, you'll be channeling that passion into something productive.
6) If it goes well, chances are she'll be transformed from a detractor into a champion.

Remember: She's 14. That means she is governed by 50% hormones and 30% adrenalin/caffeine.

As for your problem, it sounds as though she actually does have a crush :inlove: (all hail the mighty ReverendCow as he knows 14 year olds so well  ) so try and use this as a plot hook. Have an alluring NPC attack them but be dazzled by the beauty/handsomness of the girl's character and see what happens between them  . If she slashes his throat then you have a problem and should probably apply for witness protection :ghosted: but if she reacts in a positive way, interpret as you want to I am a 14 year old  , and ask yourrself the serious question; do you like her? :plotting:

Well, as far as we know, Chronoshift is 14 as well, so the attraction could be mutual.

But! We must consider something else. The friend. What is the friend's motivation in this? Could it be possible said friend is trying to destroy the DM's game? Could Chronoshift deserve this? What evil could be afoot in the friend's nefarious plans?!

Being 16 myself, I can quite say that peoples around our age group are working at only 40% hormones, 30% sugar/caffeine, and the rest is divided between 15% psychological changes relating to this stage of development (ie Hormones), and another 15% sugar/caffeine. The total energy level spent is, however, a lot larger than the average adult, because we have more sugar/caffeine, and most adults have to sit down all day in front of a desk and play games on their computer when the boss isn't looking, while we actively expend our energy in being annoying and zippity.

I think that this player thinks that the DM plays an actual character in the game, and is thus confusing BBEG with DM. I suggest that, if this is indeed the case, that you play to this misconception, shove in a BBEG, say it is your character, and she'll actively seek out and kill the BBEG, making it so much easier for you to come up with plot hooks.

However, if this isn't the case, and she actually believes that the DM himself is evil and stuff, then the above advice will suffice.

As for the topic, is she perhaps treating the game as a MMORPG? Kill the DM, win the game?

Are you running a DMPC?

Not in some places, and in many others it depends on the relative ages involved.

But yeah, in any case, there's a screw loose somewhere with this chick. Either grab a screwdriver and set her right, or leave her out of the game.

The player probably just doesn't understand the game; find out what she's misunderstanding (thinking it's DM vs. Player?) and correct that. And pay no attention to the "lol she has a crush on you" crowd because they make no sense at all.

Had one playing D&D with her elder sister (had to teach both to play at the same time) Elder sister's elf wanders into the cave and is killed by a Carrion crawler. Demands to try again and again until she is P.O.ed even though I suggest that its only a game and if you make the wrong choice this kind of thing can happen in a game. She then runs off crying. Younger sister kills my Carrioncrawler miniature by ripping off the eyestalks and then handing it to me with that cold stare like "you made my sister cry" thing.

I tell ya there is something terrifying about my cousins.

I cant really judge if she's after you or not, because I'm a blockhead, however,...

Is the problem what everyone else thinks it is, or is it just that she believes that you are some terrible "last boss" of the tabletop adventure? If this is the case, I suggest that you point out to her that you are everyone, both good and bad, and are obviously not the "last boss." She could take this two ways. One would be that she understands and her attitude changes. The other is that she would begin to think that all the npcs were involved in the evil plot with the BBEG and were out to get her. The first one is correct, but the latter provides far more entertainment. *nods*

On that subject, since I use a laptop in a bulletproof case -- at least that's what the manufacturer says, I'm NOT going to test it! -- it's reasonable to for me to assume that should a Player attempt to murder me, they will not be doing so through my screen.

Of course, they could just reach over it... ;)

I'm gonna say nothing about Age, or Gender, or, fragle rock.

But I am gonna say this. You only need one thing when dealing with people.

Read them, read them closely, and read them well. Watch how they breath. What are they looking at, how often do they look at it. Are they sitting forward? Are they sitting back? are they tapping htier pen? twidling thier fingers? laughing? being silly?

I dont have problems with people wanting to kill the DM, however I do have problems with players who want to kill eachother, its a little IC/OOC argument which stems from a constant vasilation between two worlds, one make believe, and the other (well, I wouldnt want to call it real, but I guess I have to) really borring. So, the players fight, and I learned that, one thing I can do it to build situations in which people are 'abile to shine' when they 'work togeather'

Now, if little miss magillicutty here wants to have a go at every NPC you send down the pipe, make it clear that this next one is the 'only one' that knows the answer or way throught the next quandry which the party will face, and, for that matter.... let the whole table know, or, perhapse, for yet a more interesting matter.....

hahaha

Let the other players know, but not the trouble player. And when little mis slice-an-stab had procured her new trophey, it is not your job, but the job of the whole party to 'take her and fix her' in the 'imaginary world' you guys all play in.

In the end, if you have to, go ahead and talk to her, be her firend, and run a one on one mission with her, and her horrid blood lust, let her kill off all your favorite NPC's and then, throw her in jail, where she will start the next adventure whith the whole party witness to her execution, and make her come back as a battle cleric, or something that she will have fun smashing heads with, but also have restrictions on 'alignement' things such as 'whimsical murder'.

This is exactly what I did with Tsuki, the Moon-elf assassin who went so far as to try to kill every NPC I introduced to the game. And he had a great go of it. A good time, and now, he is one of the best players I have. I mean, he's really developed, and his Cleric of Helm, Sturm is one of the shinning lights of the party, sure the other PC's dont always get on with him, but thats an alignment issue.

Dont let these people fill your mind with stuff about Gender or Age, that has nothing, I repeat, nothing, repeat, nothing, peat, nothing, nothing, to do with it... heck, I'm looking at running my next game with my Girlfriend, and thats gonna be intersting, becuase she doesn't even speak english well.... different culture and the whole shot, so... dont let no one tell you nothing about what a person can and cant do... heck, how well you really know this player? go ahead and have a chat, figure out what she wants to be and do as a character, and start to have fun....

hmmm.... macaroni and cheese.... I have to go

yes there is a screw loose mabey even a whole section of her brain is missing. i have played with this person and its funny to see her attack my dwarf he justs sneezes and she flys 60 feet and dies. to fix this person you need a welding kit a powerdrill and some 16x24 sheets of metal. along with heavy duty screws.

Interestingly, tinfoil hats actually act as an amplifier for the signals used by the government (the US government use a specific range of signal frequency, which no-one else are allowed to use)

So, yes, wear all of your tinfoil hats, they will protect you from the mind control - honest.

my sister wants to be a fairy princess and rule all the wood land creatures. I understand that they sometimes have stupid motives for thier character.

What's stupid about a fairy princess character? How is that functionally different from the "deposed elven nobleman" stereotype that makes up so many character backgrounds?

So your sister starts off as a 1st level elven druid who is working towards ruling a specific wood. Perhaps she even seeks a Prestige Class similar to Dragon Disciple (call it Faerie Disciple) in which she can become more Fae-like. Eventually she is the fairy princess she sought.

Sounds like a fine character concept.
