| MMaster01-10-05, 03:48 AM | I' m starting a new campaign in the next days and one of the players wants to play a 60 years old man..... ok..... problem is he's a druid, what happens when he wildshapes? do penalties to phisical stats still apply? I would rule it yes since it may look as a cheap way to have mental bonuses without any real drawback, my reasoning is that since with wildshape you retain your own creature type he's still a 60 years old man Do you think this is fair ruling? any changes? Thanks for any input. |
| ECOM01-10-05, 04:13 AM | It would depend on what he changed into. animals, beast, ect yes magical beasts, elemenals, dragons, ect no. but it would not be unreasonable to rule that that phisical states drop for all creatures |
| discipleofevil01-10-05, 04:40 AM | well actually as a druid when he wildshapes he assumes the creatures str dex con and his true stats dont mean much (except his hp stays the same save for the healing when you wild shape) so the answer is he should be able to be a 60 old druid and take penalties in normal form, but once he changes shape those penalties do not apply, but once revertyed to natural form they again apply but as the dm you can make house rules for anything you want. but dont punish the guy because he found a loop hole. and btw, if he were to be only 35 years old those penalties would be substansially less and the benifits equal to that of a 53 (old) or a 70 (vurn) |
| penchant01-10-05, 04:42 AM | Besides... who wants to figure age/ability modifiers for every type of animal? |
| steenan01-10-05, 04:56 AM | IMO you shouldn't keep the aging penalties when you wildshape. You change to a average member of chosen species, loosing inherent ability bonuses and bonuses from level increase, so there's no reason to still apply aging penalties. It's just that your own physical stats don't matter at all in wildshape. |
| MMaster01-10-05, 06:11 AM | one more doubt: does assuming a creature's CON modify your hp? i would say yes, but can't find it specified anywhere btw, if he were to be only 35 years old those penalties would be substansially less and the benifits equal to that of a 53 (old) or a 70 (vurn) incorrect:modifiers stack so it would be str, dex, con -3 int, wis, cha +2 it makes a big difference if you only care for mental stats who wants to figure age/ability modifiers for every type of animal? type does not change so i keep the values for human loosing inherent ability bonuses and bonuses from level increase as if the party would waste inherent abilitys bonuses on him or he would add to physical stats the level increase but dont punish the guy because he found a loop hole. what i want to insure is that he plays it because he likes the idea (to his credit he did provide a background, it needs developing but has potential) and not because it min/max nicely for the druid, maybe i'm just paranoid and fearfull of powergaming but being cautius never hurts |
| discipleofevil01-10-05, 06:36 AM | i apologize about the age thing, i missed the paragraph that says those stack. i just assumed they didnt. as for the con question i would swear i read that the hp remains the same as your base hp, but i cant seem to find the statement in the phb so without it i would have to say that they assume the hp of the creature form assumed. but you will have to decide if you take the ave hp given or have them roll for every animal form assumed |
| MMaster01-10-05, 08:51 AM | I always ruled you manteined the hp you rolled but applied the CON mod of the form you assumed, is that correct? if not then having a -3 to his original CON value would have quite an impact when wildshaping and the whole issue would be pointless. Thanks again for your help, it's much appreciated |
