| Dulamon09-15-05, 07:29 PM | I have a player who is wanting to play a juvenile in an upcomming urban campaign of mine. He wants to play a Human rogue pickpocket/begger concept character and he wants to start as a 12 or 13 year old. I really like the effort he has put into the background and want to support this through the rules. I have found in my rule books the ability modifiers for character who get to middle age and so on but i cannot find modifiers for characters that start below their adult range. I intend to let him create his character, then we will apply the modifiers that will be added back to his character when he reaches the adult age of 16. Does anyone know where i could find these modifiers or have an idea on what modifiers i should apply. I was also thinking about starting his character as small and applying the modifiers listed in the monster manual for this. Once again it will revert back to normal when the charatcer reaches maturity |

People of that age would normally be at least elf size so I'm thinking no size modifier. It's difficult to thing of anything to balance out the negetives, a bonus on will saves for think headedness perhaps? |

Do you think instituting a -1 modifier to all statistics is reasonable considering that a 12-13 y/o has less strength, co-ordination and hardiness than an adult and definately has less intelligence wisdom and charisma than an adult. These penalties will be reversed when the character reaches adulthood so it is only a short term disadvantage. I agree that a child is around the same height so no small modifiers should be used |
| Sildatorak09-16-05, 02:29 AM | In the Star Wars d20 RPG, a young adult human (12-15 years old) has -1 to all stats. Basically they aren't as fully developed as an adult and it is reflected across the board. At 16 years those will all go away. If you are looking for a nifty way to balance these penalties, you might want to consider making him small sized but giving him the powerful build trait. That will allow him to still use medium weapons, use combat maneuvers effectively, and will give him +1 AC, +1 to hit, and +4 to hide. Basically that would be trading off -1 to each stat for +1 attack, +1 AC, and a boost to one skill that matters. Personally I still think he is on the rough end of things, but it does avoid penalizing him too harshly for choosing a sub-optimal background for purposes of roleplaying. |
| Callista09-16-05, 02:33 AM | I would have the player arrange the ability scores he does get to reflect a juvenile character. For example, if he believes the character is especially foolish because he's young, place a low score in Wisdom; if he thinks that he's more dextrous, then put a higher score in DEX. |
| RaspK FOG09-16-05, 09:36 AM | Both Star Wars d20 and d20 Modern have rulings on such adjustments which are entirely logical to be lower than the adult's, since only people who are compassionate and/or family to the child tend to see the child in good favour, while the child will generally be less adept at frightening, lifting, and so on... On the other hand, a child should generally be 1 size category smaller. |
| Cherrn09-16-05, 09:55 AM | -1 to all stats is fine seeing as how a child isn't fully developed yet. You can definately not give a child a bonus on charisma. How many children do you think have a powerful personae ? |
