| Talonos12-12-03, 02:23 PM | I have a player that uses the astral plane in order to cut down on item creation costs, <edit> in terms of time </edit> . He has crafted a door in his wizards guild, using the rules in the stronghold builders guidebook, that allows him to basically enter the astral plane at will. He did this because the wizards guild also buys magic items from him at a slightly increased cost. This lets him "Sell" his experience points when he needs extra money by making items at half cost and some XP and selling them for a little more than half cost. Soon, needing "a little money" went from hundreds of gold pieces to thousands, and he couldn't make items fast enough, so he built the magic door. Last time he used it, made 141,000 gp worth of items for his guild to get gold for a new cloak, all in less than a few hours back prime material side. Imagine his suprise when I point out that making it will age him 141 days. (He's a human, so years count.) So he argued. I said he aged, because of the line in the 3.5 DMG, under planar traits, under timeless planes, where it gives an example of a 20 year old in the astral plane for 50 years turning 70 in a few seconds once he leaves. He said he based the price for the door off of a rod, I forget the name, that generates a mansion in the astral plane. Under that rod's description, it says you don't age. He also says thet in the DMG under astral plane, it says you don't age under planar traits. I'm of the opinion that under planar traits, it gives a brief summary, and assumes you'll flip to the more complete descriptions earlier in the chapter. I suppose If I wanted to be mean, I could say that you couldn't craft items at all there, because it takes time, and time doesn't pass, but after he spent a ton of money making the door, I didn't want to be quite that creul... So what do you guys say? |
| fistanthius12-12-03, 02:44 PM | Time continues to flow around him. If he spends 5 years in the astral plane making stuff, he won't age those 5 years till he goes to a plane where he can age. The years are retro'd back. (DMG P148, 3.5). Also, everyone around him not in the plane will age normally. So if he has friends, they have to wait for 5 years till he gets back. |
| Veton12-12-03, 03:50 PM | This is the player of Talonos here. He told me about the thread, and said I could add anything he forgot or correct any mistakes he made. I have a player that uses the astral plane in order to cut down on item creation costs. I'm going to assume you mean item creation time costs. Soon, needing "a little money" went from hundreds of gold pieces to thousands, and he couldn't make items fast enough, so he built the magic door. Last time he used it, made 141,000 gp worth of items for his guild to get gold for a new cloak, all in less than a few hours back prime material side. :uh-huh: Where'd you get that gigantic amount? It was only 17,000 gold. Imagine his suprise when I point out that making it will age him 141 days. (He's a human, so years count.) Since I corrected the amount above, does this mean I'll only have aged 17 days? (If we still go with this rule)? So he argued. I said he aged, because of the line in the 3.5 DMG, under planar traits, under timeless planes, where it gives an example of a 20 year old in the astral plane for 50 years turning 70 in a few seconds once he leaves... <SNIP> ...He also says thet in the DMG under astral plane, it says you don't age under planar traits. I'm of the opinion that under planar traits, it gives a brief summary, and assumes you'll flip to the more complete descriptions earlier in the chapter. That's because it does have something different. For example, the Astral Plane has subjective gravity, and that's all it says. But for timeless... from the 3.5 SRD Timeless. Age, hunger, thirst, poison, and natural healing don’t function in the Astral Plane, though they resume functioning when the traveler leaves the Astral Plane. Emphasis mine That means that while you stop aging, digesting food, using up water, being affected by poison, and don't heal naturally while on the plane, once you leave it then "starts up" again, sort of like pressing the "pause" button on a VCR then pushing "play." |
| fistanthius12-12-03, 04:13 PM | From DMG page 148 "Timeless: On planes with this trait, time still passes, but the effects of time are diminished. See the description of the Astral Plane, page 154, for an example of how the timeless trait can affect certain activities or conditions such as hunger, thirst, aging, the effects of poison, and healing. The danger of a timeless plane is that once one leaves such a plane for one where time flows normally, conditions such as hunger and aging do occure retroactively. A character who hasn't eaten for ten years on a timeless plane might be ravenous (though not dead), and one who has been "stuck" at age twenty for fifty years might now reach age seventy in a heartbeat." |
| Nagol12-12-03, 04:14 PM | From the 3.5 SRD, emphasis mine Timeless: On planes with this trait, time still passes, but the effects of time are diminished. How the timeless trait can affect certain activities or conditions such as hunger, thirst, aging, the effects of poison, and healing varies from plane to plane. The danger of a timeless plane is that once one leaves such a plane for one where time flows normally, conditions such as hunger and aging do occur retroactively. Retroactive aging occurs. |
| Shemeska the Marauder12-12-03, 10:39 PM | The Githyanki have at times had terrible problems with retroactive aging when they leave the Astral Plane. They've since countered the problem with spells that diminish or fully remove this problem for those 'yanki that have lived on the Astral plane continuously for long periods of time who then visit other planes. |
| Talonos12-16-03, 09:32 AM | Where'd you get that gigantic amount? It was only 17,000 gold. Last time he used it, made 141,000 gp worth of items for his guild to get gold for a new cloak Emphasis mine. You sold enough experience to get about 17,000 gold. In order to do that, you had to make about 141,000 gp worth of magic items, which they then paid you about 158,000 for, and then you spent that 17,000 profit to make a cloak for you. Please get your facts straight with me before you accidentally embarrass me online, Veton. Believe it or not, I'm not completely insane! <edit>Besides, I can do a completely adequate job of embarrassing myself!</edit> |
