I'm not sure. I think you can, but I don't think you should. Even with that said, there are times you can. I had a character that was moving from a NE selfish rich kid to a NG selfless hero, or at least I hope he was. The DM changed my PC's alignment without notice, save to tell me that he was no longer NE but N and finally no longer N but NG.

If a player is playing a character that is trying to change their spots as it were, then no. Just inform them that they are a new alignment.

If they aren't trying to change alignment but their actions are not that of their proffessed alignment, then let them know something is happening to them. Tell them both in game and out of game what you expect themto do for the given alignment they think they are.

Let me guess, the PC is CN but acting CE or NE?

Here is what I do...
I have all my players right down the alignments of all the other players and I use this to consider making an alignment check. Now if your players do not understand the alignment system, please read the alignments off to them before the survey to get them in the right mindset.

In your case I would imagine the player will average out to LE, which is what I would make the new alignment. Yes, DMs change alignments but they have to have a foundation or basis beyond simple "I said so" and this is a good way.

Whoa.

Haven't seen that too many times. Well, now mind you this is what I'd do so feel free to ignore any parts that don't fit your situation.

Invite him over to talk about a few things and tell him this is how, if he wishes to remain LG, he should change his PCs ways. Of course he can play his PC any way he wants but there are consequences for such actions. Ask him to justify his PC's actions based on the following:

1: Is he promoting justice?

2: Is he putting others above himself in this decision?

3: Is he bringing up a greater good?

4: Is mercy being applied?

Now if there's a big fat No for 3 or more, tell him he has a real issue. If all 4 are "No" then he really does have nothing to stand on. Even 2 "No" answers are incredibly suspect.

Next time you're group is playing, when he does something that could be evil, stop him right before he does it. I mean let him continue but bring up just what does he think he's doing, does he know what he's about to do to his PC's alignment.

But of course let him do whatever he wants. Even if you do turn his character NE, if he thinks he's LG, let him think that. The NPCs who watch his actions won't believe that but be careful even there. A Lammasu would probably take him at his word tht he's LG until his actions show otherwise.
