A character in my game is now immune to poisons. He started drinking like a fish in a tavern (he was in the tavern, the metaphorical fish was not) and was shocked when I asked him to make a Fort sv to see if he was getting drunk. He claimed that alchohol was a poison and therefore it should not affect him. I said it wasn't and then other players (damn those players that have an opinion 'shutter') started chiming in with thoughts like "Are potions poisons? I mean, some of those things do terrible stuff to adventurers!" and "What about a thick liquid that does damage if drank, but also if it's rubbed on someone's skin?" "Hey ya! That means topical creams are poisons! And what about acids? They hurt your skin!!"

If I hadn't started throwing d20's at them from behind my screen, it wouldn't have been long before they were declaring swords and dieties as poisons.

So my question is... is alchohol a poison?

It's treated like one, for simplicity's sake; so, yes, the poison-immune character cannot get drunk.

There's rules for handling intoxication in the Arms & Equipment Guide.

In real life, yes

In D&D, it's up to you.

I would say yes.

Alchol is a toxin and in Game terms, a Wis/Dex poison. Immunity to poison makes you immune to all effects of alchol.

Yes, Alcohol is a poison.

I just now realized how HORRIBLE it would be to have an immunity to poison… You could never get drunk again!

i would say its not a poison however i am a STRONG believer in the DMs law goes. so if they are giving you c**p about it, say its not a poison.

Yes it is a poison. Many things are poisons when taken in large enough doses, however.

Botox would not work, for instance. (:D)

Both salt and iron are poisonous if taken in too large of a dose, I wonder if poison immunity would simply mean the person is immune to too large a dose...

Goes off to ponder...

You can normally drop your immunity to poisons if for some reason you want to, just like you can fail a save on purpose.

Any toxicologist will tell you that any substance, no matter how innocent and mundane, can be construed as a poison based on it's ability to do you harm. It's all a matter of dosage, which is why most substances have a designation known as LD/50 (lethal dosage that kills 50% of the test group). The LD/50 is typically known as the lethal dose if I'm not mistaken (it's been 12 years since I took toxicology, so bear with me).

Technically,he's immune to everything, if he really wanted to be a pest about it. You've found yourself in a situation where you will have to render judgement on exactly what immunity to poison includes. I would say he's immune to the potentially lethal effects of poison, such as ability score damage, but totally vulnerable to the non-lethal effects of a poison, such as the -2 to everything from drinking a gallon of unchased booze. Otherwise, be prepared for the PC to take his show on the road to win loads of cash in rigged drinking contests.

Hmm...maybe that's not such a bad idea either, then you can hunt him down later for being a drinking contest hustler.
