As a New Dm i need help with a problem that may be simpler than what it is to me...

I'm running a Campaign between 4 friends (3 players and 1 dm(me)

their Alignments are:
Lawful Good Paladin
True Neutral Fighter
Lawful Evil Rogue

I understand that the TN will work with either....but i need to know

What exactly is 'GOOD' and 'EVIL'

i understand this is a debate that has been going on for years....
but what i really need to know is:

If the Law of the Land allows for the murder of anyone who committed a crime that's value exceeds 1gp (they stole a torch (i think thats a 1 gp item...been running with other light sources too long)
would that give the Lawful Good Paladin the right to kill over 1 gp?

i think that would give the Pally a DUTY to turn over the vandel to the proper authorities. I've never seen LG as taking law into their own hands; i see that as more CG. just my 2coppers

Ok so the Lawful Good Pally
Gets to Turn in the offender, where the TN fighter would either kill or turn in for some form of profit and the TE Rogue would probably Kill

the answer to you primary question is "No." The pally dosen't "get" to kill just because the law of an evil land says so. (any land that allows killing for the punishment of a minor theft is evil).

The bigger question you asked:
Good is a desire to promote the welfare of others without motivation to gain benefit for yourself.

Evil is the opposite: A desire to exploit others through a motivation to benfit yourself
