Does anyone here do anything to rebalance the bonuses gained per level? I was just reviewing the Favoured Soul character chart, and it seems like some levels are way better than others.

Improvement from lvl 8 to lvl 9: no base attack bonus, no saves, no special bonus, no extra spells known, nothing. Just one extra 4th and one extra 3rd level spell per day. Yay. 2 new spells per day.

Compare that to the next level, from 9 to 10: +1/+1 BAB, +1 in all three saves, Energy Resistance (2nd type), a total of no less than seven new spells known and 4 new spells per day, including three of a level they couldn't use before.

Now, fine, over all it averages out, but doesn't that screw up CRs? A lvl 10 Favoured Soul is a much tougher opponent than a lvl 9 Favoured Soul. Also, how does that affect multiclassing? I know that when my Soul gets to level 8, I'll be seriously considering taking a level in something else rather than taking such a useless level 9.

So, does anyone do things to avoid problems like that? I'm not just talking about Favoured Souls, they're just a good example of where WotC set it up so that levels are not all equally useful.

I suppose, for the FS, what I may do to balance it (assuming others agree) is to move Energy reistance (2nd type) down to lvl 9, meaning that you don't get it and the new level of spells and all those base saves/attack bonuses all in one level.

That sort of thing happens with a large number of classes.. For instance, take a look at a regular Fighter reaching level 5 (+1 bab, no saves, no feats) versus a Fighter reaching level 6 (+1 bab, extra attack, +1 to all saves, bonus feat, normal feat) :)

I think all the classes have some levels at which you basically get nothing more than some more hit points. It's never really struck me as a problem, so I don't do anything about it. :)

If there is a lot of player envy in the group, then that would cause a problem too, but it's nothing to change the classes about - because in a few levels, anyone who got little in the last few levels will get a boost, mostly.

I'd say it would be a problem if all classes had boosts and plateaus at the same levels.

You can't judge the balance of your class by what you get next level in comparison to everyone else.

I've been playing a wizard alongside a fighter and a fighter/sorcerer from 3rd to 9th level so far. We're the only ones who have been present for all the sessions, so we're leveling at the same time, and it is amazing how different each level is for each player.

Fighter 5 is pretty sad, really (especially when you roll a 1 for HP) but Wizard 5 is a feat and access to Fireball. (The ftr/sor was getting Sorcerer 2, which has to be about the gimpiest level of all). I think it all works out, though.
