Early on IMC the PC's will have to make a choice between siding with a

Village of Gnomes
pop:93
Leader is a Lv.3 Gnome Ranger

or a

Village of Kobolds
pop:102
Leader is a Lv.1 Rouge/Lv.3 Sorccerer

They are disputing hunting rights in the forest they share. Resently the Kobolds have been pushing further into the gnome huntering ground but it is only because a Mercenary Force has set up base in their territory and they are not going to be leaving anytime soon. The gnomes know this and dont care but dont tell the PCs.

The mercenaries will be willing to talk to the PCs but woun't leave and they blame the Kobolds for not wanting to aproch near their base or hunt in the same territory has they might be mistaken as pray to the Mercenary Hunters.

The Thing is the Kobolds are willing to talk things out but the Gnomes who hate the kobolds for pevious wars between them are calling for blood if the kobolds dont stop hunting in their land. IMC Kobolds are not fanatic <we hate all none Kobold> and are usualy LN. The leader of the Kobolds does not want to see her people malnutristioned from lack of meat and the effects are already showing in the village.

The PCs have to figure out how to settle this oh and heres the thing about them their are 5 of them, 2 are Gnomes and They already have 1 enemy who is Kobold is from that village and his team (Team Ro'ket to be exact, I know what your thinking but the PCs mentioned that they wanted silly enemies so I though what the heck) set a trap for them outside of the frist dungeon they were in (it was a simple but effective thanks to the PCs forgeting I told them the Enemies will be played Intellegently) and took the Crane Clan Samurai PCs Magic Ansestor Inhanced Katana and umm the other ones who's name I forget and is now on a quest of vengence agenst them do to the honor system not to mention the best tresure they found in the dungeon a valueable (for 1st level standerds) Golden Hair "Comb" (you know what I mean) worth 700GP.

For these resion I am pritty sure that the PCs will side with the Gnomes and attack the Kobolds Tunnel Village. They will probly be able to get 20 Gnomes to help but the Kobolds will still out number them 5 to 3 and will be on the defencsive. Unless they are smart and think up one of the the plans I will not write here if they are using this fourm that they will be slughtered.

This is the party I want to know how to agust a few Kobold weaknesses to them so they have at least a 1 in 4 chance of deffeting the kobold miltia but not make it look like I let them win they are all level 1 but the Gnome Wizard who is level 2:

Human (Crane) Samurai LN : Acts like leader and people listen most of the time since he lost his only Melee weapons he fights with a crued Boboo Quarter Staff he put nails through on one end till he finds a new weapon which he probly will when they get to the gnome or kobold villages and he says he wants a Naginata and new Katana.

Gnome Wizard CG : Usualy Cast summon Monster spells IMC the summon monster spells last 5 round/Caster level , didnt want to spend money on weapons so he has a Quarter Staff aswell as throws rocks. Raven Familiar.

Gnome Cleric of the gnome god TN : Only support spells like bless, heal and create food and water. Fights with a Hevey Crossbow

Hobgoblin "Wu Jen" LE : Because the LA and +2 Dex and Con with Str 16 Dex 14 Con 14 Int 16 this Fachion wealding War Mechine will cut through 3 goblin and not get scrached and then take a minute casting Ray of Infeblement on their leader (who is then finished off by the Samurai) then kill another goblin. This may seem way to powerful but she choose Wisdom as her dump stat and with a Wis of 5 they are very easly damaged by spells.

Human (Scorpion) Rouge NE : All their skill points are in
Disable Device, Move Silently, Fourgery, Disguise Self and Bluff. In combat she tends to stay at max range pefore penalty and fire with her light Crossbow.

How can I let them have a chance to survive agenst the Kobold village becuase I am Sure that they will attack it for the reword the Gnomes are offering but still make it realistic enouph to make it look like the Kobolds realy want to live.

I'm not sure what you're looking for - if I read it right, you want the pcs to side with the gnomes, and you are looking for weakenesses that can be exploited by the players, so that they can win in a battle?

If that's it, the first thing that comes to mind is it is a kobold village - there will be non-combatants (females - unless kobold females fight too, children, aged individuals, etc). They can all be threatened with various means. The summoned creature can be used that way, as can the rogue.

The kobolds will also be weaker - they may be still accurate with missile weapons, but they will be weaker in melee perhaps. The kobolds can have less hp than they normally would, can look starved, perhaps some can surrender or try to run away, failing due to weakness, etc.

The other thing to consider if the pcs choose to side with the gnomes, will they try to kill the kobolds or talk things out (even if they have to win in a battle first)? You need to make sure that your storyline allows for some possibilities like that (what if the kobolds surrender and they keep fighting - the npc gnomes probably will). I don't want to get the ultimate goal (if you have one other then "lets see what they do with this situation") - since you basically said the players may read this and figure it out, but you need to keep that in mind when exploring your options.

I dont want them to side with the Gnomes but I am 95% sure they will.

the kobold village has 55 lv1 Warriors plus 5 lv 1 sorccerers and the leader.

The Gnome village only has a 17 Gnome Warriors and the Leader and her 2 trained attack wolves. The gnomes have better equipment (Mwk gnome short swords and Chain shirts). The Kobolds Have only normal cloths but some will have padded and leather armor and have simple weapons like miners picks and spears and will be in poor health. Their only atvantage is numbers and their traps.

They will know this but the reward for Victory (Death to all the Kobolds in the gnome oppinion) is a +1 Short sword(med) of Ice and a +1 Small Steel Sheild of Fire Reistance/5. The reward is so good cause they will be majory out numbered and attacking a fortified, trap filled dungeon like village.

If they side with the Kobolds since the gnomes woun't take peace for an answer and are only useing the Hunting problems as a exuse to start a war. The kobold reward is not as good since they have more warriors its a case of 10 Bolts of Sleep and 50' of silk rope and maybe some gold.

I want eather the Gnomes or Kobolds wiped out but if the players get some good Diplomicy rolls I dont mind if both villages remain.

I want to let the PCs moral choice to side with the Racist blood thirsty Gnomes to get better stuff or to side with the Helpless Kobolds by deffending their village when the Gnomes attack and get minimal reward because its the right thing to do even though 2 of the PCs are Gnomes.

This will be the frist event in the campaign that will give the PCs reputation points and what they do will affect what kind of reputation they get and what kind of clients will aproch them.

So, what's your question? Do you want advice on how the village should be defended? Advice on how to convince the party to side with the kobolds? Advice on how not to kill the party while not appearing to hold back? If the party is higher than third level or so, the latter probably won't be a problem. As for the second, keep in mind that most players are unused to kobolds that aren't evil and gnomes that aren't good. I trust you've told them that kobolds don't tend towards evil in your campaign, but you may want to remind them.

I don't agree. A competently defended village (and kobolds are as intelligent as humans) should be able to hold back a LOT. Unless the PCs are at least 5th level (at which point they can use lightning bolts to blast walls), they're toast.

If you want to play up reasons on why to protect the kobold village, just have the PC's have to deal with some really rude, REALLY REALLY Racist gnomes, and make it clear the only thing they get out of this is good stuff, and blood on their hands...

As for the village itself...I'm kinda with Asta Kask, I'd think the PC's would get slaghtered if you play it realistically...

Well...to try to be helpful...have traps, but have the party use the theif to discover them (and bypass them) as one of the main defenses the kobolds use...

My only problem is, the number of kobolds + the fact they could just use ranged weapons.... combined with the fact the PC's are mostly low level, doesn't make it look very good for the PC's....

In fact I figure they should have the fight be alot easier if they defend the kobolds...

Sorry if that isn't much help.

Don't have the gnomes ask the PCs to "kill the kobolts", but to "deal with the kobolts and make sure the hunting grounds of the gnomes are not at risk anymore".
That way you leave more room for the PCs to negotiate between the two villages.
Why on earth would the gnomes want to attack the kobolts, losing many lives in the process. They won't be able to defend themselves against anything afterwards. It would be (delayed) suicide for the whole village.

You could even have the village-elders ask to mediate between the villages because the PCs could have a more open view on the situation.

If the PCs still opt for the frontal assault, don't hold back. Play the kobolts as smart as they are. If the PCs get killed: too bad.

...or, if the PCs find out about how the mercenaries are encroaching on the kobold's territores, you could have an even bigger, better battle between the mercs and the kobold/gnome/PC force. this can lead to more adventures and plotlines and stuff, while giving the PCs a temporary base of operations...

but that rarely happens with most PCS...

so, if they decide to go either way, make the opposing force fight with pure survival instinct, and dont hold anything back. if a character dies, so be it. how hard is it to gen up another character? =D

Thanks for the advice. Well only 2 of my PCs have played before so they dont realy know anything about the attitudes of Gnomes or Kobolds. It looks now though the Kobolds will not be attacked and their will be peace talks if the PCs can convice the Gnomes. The Crane Samurai rembers that he is a diplomat and that he took 3 ranks in Diplomacy.

Last night I was running a private action with the Crane Samurai. (When ever the party gets to a town and the session ends before they can do anything in town other than get a room at the Inn I give the party members a chance to role play 1 on 1 with me in that town if they want.) He was watching the "MSNBC" in the Inn Common Room he even made me RP the News Reporters and he now knows about the Kobold side of the story. He has disided to go help them which I did not coun't on neather did I coun't on him making a point to check the news rather then just the program for bounty hunters. He disided It was the Honorable thing to do and so he when to the Arms dealer bought a MWK Katana and then went to the market and spent the rest of "his" money on 20 sacks full of salted meat and a pack mule and 2 goats. Now when I say "his" money I mean the all but the gold they need for the Inn stay and emergencies since he thinks its "his" (as in he is a samurai fudal lord and there for owns his followers which he does not) party their for his money.

I know this wount go over well with the rest of the party but the cleric will probly not mind. Since he spent all their Money on it their is no ways they will be siding the Gnomes well maybe the Wu Jen and Rouge will switch.

I'm realy not looking foward to the other PCs wanting Private Actions since they will find out all their money is gone but they will probly just check the Bounty Hunter Show and see what they can do around town if that is so they will be level 2 pritty soon.

Do any of you people use the Private Action system? I got the Idea from the Game 'Star Ocean : The 2nd Story'.

Also since I have your attention can you help me with names for the Programs on the Magic Sevarian Neworks Broadcasting Corperations channels? These are the shows they have:

Bouty Hunter Show -- <no name> (I dont want to use the name of the show from Cowboy Bebop so I dont have one yet.

The News -- MSNBC News

Televangelist of Pelor -- <no name>

Sports channal -- <no name> (Sports as in pit fighting animals)

History Show -- <no name>

Could you think of some names for them?
