TO be honest I think the current CR system is perfectly good for what it is - a way of telling roughly what monsters are likely to beat an average party in a straight fight. I'm not sure streamlining is the answer. As for setting up "proper" enounters, however, I have to get on my non-canon-screw-the-rules soapbox and say that to my mind a *proper* encounter is one in which the things the PCs encounter make sense appearing in the location they encounter them in. This usually means throwing the CR system out of the window. If the PCs break into the house of a wealthy merchant their guards won't magically get stronger just because the PCs are high level. If the PCs wander into the lair of an ancient red dragon, guess what, it'll probably have an ancient red dragon in it. The other thing to remember about CR is that it's only an average. In a party consisting entirely of Clerics, Undead are far less of a threat than in one with no Cleric at all. If your party has a Trollbane sword and a doen Arrows of Troll Slaying, then chances are Trolls aren't as much of a threat as the books say they are, and so on. |
