I'm currently in the process of planning a Forgotten Realms campaign that is set during the spellplague, the first session will begin on the very day Mystra is killed. I love the idea of combining D&D with a post-apocalyptic feel. The event will happen slightly differently than presented by Wizards (eg. most major cities will be seriously hit since they are concentrations of magic.) After the initial effects of the spellplague I will then diverge significantly from the official storyline. One of the main reasons for this is that my group will not be switching to 4e. The arc I am planning is taking the characters from confused 1st level survivors of the spellplague to high levels where they will help to restore magic in the Realms. I'm thinking they will somehow find a "strand" of the weave and do something with it, not sure yet. I was just curious if anyone else is planning something like this and had any ideas I could shamelessly steal. A few issues I can see is that the lack of (or instability of) magic severely limits class and prestige class choices. I might rule that Warlock invocations have been left unaffected just to open some options. Also with Unearthed Arcana it is easy to make non-spellcasting paladins and rangers so that's covered. But the choices are still severely restricted. Also, related to this, is the lack of healing in the world. D&D is set up in such a way that easy access to healing is almost mandatory. Anyways, if anyone has any suggestions either rule wise or story wise I'd love to hear them. Thanks. |
