I'm looking at running a low combat scary adventure for my players. I've been flipping through heros of horror and like some of the stuff mentioned in there but as far as I can tell its not quite what I'm looking for.

The group right now consists of a LG Paly, NG Favored Soul (those two are of same deity), NG Sorc, and CG Fighter. I was going to have their adventure revolve around being trapped in a apparently abbandoned mining town. Was going to have the town not abbandoned but have everybody dead due to some evil ancient artifact buried in the mine. They were going to have to figure out why everybody is missing and then go into the mine find and destroy the artifact.

I was thinking of them having trouble sleeping and only recovering half normal HP, healing spells only work half, maybe con drain if they go into mine. But these are all just ideas. I've talked to the players and told them I wanted to do a "low combat, scary adventure" and they are all excited about it now. I kinda need some ideas to make it challenging and fun without resorting to traps and fighting things all the time.

Any ideas or suggestions? I've got a couple weeks before they are done with current adventure they should be level 6ish when they are done with that.

Look into the rules for sanity and taint. The two of them can add a whole 'nother dimension to horror games.

Or the old (White Wolf) Ravenloft rules on Fear, Horror and Madness. And Sinkholes ...

I am thinking I'm going to use slightly modified taint rules (make it take longer before its permanent, I figure they'll be stucck in the site for maybe 1 or one and a half ingame weeks), but where do you see the sanity stuff? Is that still in Hero's of Horror? My big thing I'm running into is that whatever I chose to do almost needs to be fun enough to revolve 3 or 4 sessions around with very little combat or interaction with NPC's

The taint is going to be part of it, but isn't an exciting enough mechanic on its own for what I'm looking for.

I never played ravenloft before, I don't have or have access to those rules, do yo happen to know if they were covered in depth in old edition dragon magazines? (I bought a cd archive of like the first 250 issues, but its kinda hard to find a lot of stuff in there)

You can find some variant sanity rules at www.d20srd.org.

My other piece of advice is to have them be hunted by some creature they can't beat. Slap a scary template on a ghoul or a ghost.

There's a whole bunch of threads with creepy events too. Just to name a few:

Good luck scarin' them!

SO maybe if I have some uber ghost hunting them in the town (I could combine that with the Haunted eviroment rules in HoH easy) then my encounters could be rated on the difficulty of temoprarily escaping the entity, I'd have to play with it some to get the CR for the "run-away" encounters correct but I could swing that I think. Thanks for all the help
