| OugonSayajin02-03-07, 12:04 PM | Hey guys, Right now i'm a PC in my party, but i'm in charge of the ambientation. Here in Venezuela dragon ball was a major succes and therefore anyone remember the songs from the battles; thatīs what i'm using right now of ambientation music for the battles and it works really fine. So, i was wondering, what kind of music do you use in your games?? |
| Ziggy_Stardust02-03-07, 12:08 PM | As of right now I only play online. So none :( |
| OneWinged4ngel02-03-07, 12:47 PM | As of right now I only play online. So none :( I play online too, but I use music in my games. Why would playing online stop that? |
| maurezen02-03-07, 01:24 PM | Some classics. "The four seasons" while traveling, (choosing an appropriate season, of course). "Requiem" while things go bleak for a party. "O Fortuna" when they are grabbing loot after a lucky final fight. When mastering online, I post what music could be a soundtrack at athe moment, that's great. |
| Ziggy_Stardust02-03-07, 02:26 PM | I play online too, but I use music in my games. Why would playing online stop that? Because you can't hear music through text. (I play online through chatting, not VoIP) |
| OneWinged4ngel02-03-07, 02:48 PM | Because you can't hear music through text. (I play online through chatting, not VoIP) I play online through chatting too... but I can still play music over the internet. You know, you're not limited to running one program at once on your computer. We don't live in 1980. Multitasking has been invented, so computers can actually do more than one thing (display text) at once. Also, I don't even know what VoIP stands for >_> |
| Biggen_Gurble02-03-07, 02:56 PM | My group uses mostly rpg music and it works really well. being theres lots of town, travel and battle music perfect for it. we tend to use: Final Fantasy 7 Final Fantasy Tactics Kingdom Hearts Legend Of Zelda Those four games cover most of the basis of music i find i need as well as ff7s jenova theme being amazing boss music. -biggen |
| Arrowhen02-03-07, 03:06 PM | I play online through chatting too... but I can still play music over the internet. You know, you're not limited to running one program at once on your computer. We don't live in 1980. Multitasking has been invented, so computers can actually do more than one thing (display text) at once. I don't think listening to music while you chat really counts as "using music in your game". Unless you're playing over some kind of chat client where the DM can stream tracks to the other players. Also, I don't even know what VoIP stands for >_> Voice over Internet Protocol. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VoIP) |
| OneWinged4ngel02-03-07, 07:41 PM | I don't think listening to music while you chat really counts as "using music in your game". Unless you're playing over some kind of chat client where the DM can stream tracks to the other players. Uhhh, if the other players can hear it, it counts as using music in your game. And yes, I can stream it to other players. Without the chat client. Why would it need to be part of the client? |
| zama20202-04-07, 01:36 PM | I take the music from every single video game I own, give them a listen, and sort the ones I like into several different moods: Combat, Horror, Peaceful, Suspenseful, Triumphant, etc. Sound effects too: Ambient Forest, Ambient Tavern, etc. Movie soundtracks like LotR or Conan work good too except many times a single track will span several different moods. Then I just run multiple instances of winamp so I can have, say, the "Peaceful" music playlist playing over the babble of people talking in the "Ambient Tavern" playlist. I'm experimenting with the RPG Soundmixer (http://www.rpgsoundmixer.com/main/index.php) - if I had more time I would make better use of it. You can also hyperlink music playlists & sound effects in the adventure tab of DM Genie (http://www.dmgenie.com/), which I found handy. |
| Arrowhen02-04-07, 02:07 PM | Uhhh, if the other players can hear it, it counts as using music in your game. Yes, but you never said other players could hear it. You just wrote an inexplicably snotty reply about how you can play music over the internet and run more than one program on your computer. And yes, I can stream it to other players. Without the chat client. Why would it need to be part of the client? I don't suppose it would need to be. I just thinking of those gaming specific chat clients with built-in dice rollers and maps and stuff. I've never done any online gaming (except for a few message board things), so I'm not familiar with how they work, but it seemed like the ability to cue in scene-appropriate music would be cool. |
| OneWinged4ngel02-04-07, 02:15 PM | Yes, but you never said other players could hear it. You just wrote an inexplicably snotty reply about how you can play music over the internet and run more than one program on your computer. The wording "playing something over the internet" would imply that you're sending it to other players to hear. Also, not sure why that would be "inexplicably snotty", but hey, whatever you say man. I guess you can derive whatever tone you like from text, although that is rather presumptuous of you. |
| MagicMouth02-04-07, 02:28 PM | "Those Chosen by the Planet" from Final Fantasy VII makes a really good theme for a major villain of the campaign. Very omnious. "Otherworld" from Final Fantasy X would be fitting for a hard battle, in my opinion. The various Warcraft games are shock full of good music. Neverwinter Nights has some nice music as well, such as Aribethīs battle theme. |
| Arrowhen02-04-07, 02:59 PM | The wording "playing something over the internet" would imply that you're sending it to other players to hear. I think most people would interpret "playing something over the internet" to mean listening to something over the internet, i.e. internet radio.
Also, not sure why that would be "inexplicably snotty", but hey, whatever you say man. I guess you can derive whatever tone you like from text, although that is rather presumptuous of you.
It just seemed that the sarcastic comments about multi-tasking were an unwarranted and unhelpful reaction to the poster's innocent confusion. Anyway, it's no skin off my nose. What kind of software do you use for streaming? I don't have much use for chat-based gaming, myself, because there aren't a lot of players available when I have the most free time (weekdays during the day), but I am curious about how it works. Can you switch tracks instantly to fit the mood of what's going on in the game? And, if so, how much lag is present between the time you start playing a new track and the time the other players start hearing it? Do you have the ability to blend tracks together, like playing a generic background track with ambient tavern sounds on top of that and then fading in ominous, suspenseful music as the innkeeper begins talking about the mysterious disappearances in town? That's the level of control I'd need over the music in order for it to enhance immersion rather than distract from it. (Plus, I write music, and I think it would be fun to compose all those tracks in the first place, along with writing themes for major NPCs, etc.) |
| OneWinged4ngel02-04-07, 03:10 PM | Honestly, I tend to post up things I plan to use beforehand to download, and I can link players to sites that will streamline music, then I simply notify when to play. It's simple, and it works well enough (so far has had no issues, but I can see where there would be room for some), but I'd be eager to find a better solution if one is available. |
| Sereno02-05-07, 09:47 AM | I use a lot of Matti Palaanen's music: Celestial Aeon Project (http://www.mikseri.net/artists/?id=48147). |
| Arganis02-05-07, 10:28 AM | Great link, Sereno. If the OP has had success with DBZ soundtracks, perhaps he will benefit from soundtracks from other shonen anime such as: Naruto One Piece Bleach In addition: Cowboy Bebop Samurai Champloo |
| Sereno02-05-07, 11:27 AM | Great link, Sereno. I discovered the guy a couple of years ago and remain impressed with his work. "Burn Them Down" is, IMO, one of the best battle themes! I use it all the time! There's a really nice mixture of moods and themes that go well with most RP-ing, and none of the music is familiar enough to spark conversations. I use Conan and LoTR, music, too ... but inevitably, we'll start talking about the movies! :) I don't have that problem with Mr. Paalanen's fine music. Apparently he's also working on the soundtrack for a fan-rewrite of an Ultima game ... I'm looking forward to the final versions of that! |
| Arganis02-05-07, 11:41 AM | I use Conan and LoTR, music, too ... but inevitably, we'll start talking about the movies! :) Conan music is great. Though the movie itself proved wanting for much, the soundtrack to Kull the Conqueror seems like it would be pretty slick if your game called for electric-guitar fantasy. |
| Sereno02-05-07, 01:37 PM | Though the movie itself proved wanting for much, the soundtrack to Kull the Conqueror seems like it would be pretty slick if your game called for electric-guitar fantasy. If I understand the story correctly, they originally wanted to do Conan with the same type of soundtrack as Kull. Personally, I think the Conan music suited it very well and the Kull music, not so much. Kull wasn't really *that* bad of a movie (considering, in general, how bad most fantasy movies are ... even the "great" ones are still campy) but I still think a Conan-like soundtrack would have made it better than the heavy-metal guitar riffs. At least, though, there weren't any lyrics. I always find that any music with lyrics fails as "background" music -- for movies and for gaming. And, it's not that I don't like heavy metal ... I just don't think it suits fantasy gaming as well as "Conan-style" music does. |
| Arganis02-05-07, 02:32 PM | I still think a Conan-like soundtrack would have made it better than the heavy-metal guitar riffs. I didn't remember the guitar riffs being that heavy, but I haven't seen it in a while. In my memory I considered it a subtle but refreshing twist. At least, though, there weren't any lyrics. I always find that any music with lyrics fails as "background" music -- for movies and for gaming. True that. And, it's not that I don't like heavy metal ... I just don't think it suits fantasy gaming as well as "Conan-style" music does. I love me some fantasy metal. Rar Mastadon! It's actually pretty remarkable how similarly rooted heavy metal and the modern fantasy genre are. At the very least, if a particular lineup of fantasy ambientation* includes Kull without including Conan, this is a travesty. Conan without Krull will be considered a perfectly reasonable nontravesty. *=did the other posters in this thread actually fabricate a random Internet conflict over streaming music to bandy about instead of addressing the word ambientation? |
| Vahenir02-05-07, 02:49 PM | I have a ton of music I put on when gaming, depending on what type of game, or even jsut the general mood of the current encounter. It all depends. Stuff that I currently have laying around . . . Some Midnight Syndicate, some Nox Arcana, a little Mortiis, some Resident Evil music, some Dead Can Dance, some Silent Hill music (video game), and the following soundtracks/scores: Alexander Troy Aeon Flux Lord of the Rings Batman Begins Kingdom of Heaven Gladiator Conan The Barbarian The Last Samurai King Arthur Pirates of the Caribbean I've also got lots of random stuff like African drum music (worked amazingly for a Conan game I ran recently that had a stint in Kush) and random songs from all sorts of albums. I rarely use any songs with lyrics, except in certain circumstances, and only when the lyrics are from a female vocalist with an airy voice. Anything else is just too jarring. |
| let_the_galaxy_burn02-05-07, 03:07 PM | ok so i'm a heavy metal kind of guy but when i dm (face to face only at present) i like to have some "battle" metal on in the background, nice and low for ambience. examples include: hammerfall ("heroes return" rocks for a big fight) dragonforce (check out "storming the burning fields" and "revolution deathsquad") three inches of blood (who can argue with the truly awesome "kill the orcs" or "skeletal onslaught" (yes really!)) they are my main three but there are others if you look, thought they do get a bit screamy (3 inches) or a bit epic guitar solo (dragon force) but they are still cool for low background stuff. plus your pc's will always remember the fight with the orc warlord with the sound of cam pipes in the background yelling "kill the orcs, slay the orcs, destroy the orcs!" i know my pcs do. |
| Vahenir02-05-07, 03:21 PM | i like to have some "battle" metal on in the background, nice and low for ambience. examples include: Manowar was not on your list. For shame! |
| let_the_galaxy_burn02-05-07, 03:25 PM | sorry dude! it was a quick post, i also didnt mention others, such as battlelore, cirith ungol and some maiden. there are more still but the top three are literally my top three! |
| Mock2602-05-07, 05:54 PM | I second The Midnight Syndicate as a good choice of music. They have a webpage, just google their name. Additionally, anything by a group known as Glass Hammer, but especially their Middle Earth Album. And, the soundtrack to the movie Conan The Barbarian. Other than those, anything celtic works really well with D&D. Vahenir, which Kingdom of Heaven are you referring to? The great samurai movie or that horrid Oliver Stone movie? |
| let_the_galaxy_burn02-06-07, 02:23 AM | If your looking for something a bit more nordic (i've played a viking style campaign in the past) something like amon amarth would work really well, also though i've only heard one song korpliklaani seem to fit (hunting song is awesome). |

I was thinking of Heaven and Earth for some reason when I read Kingdom of Heaven. Yes, it is a very good soundtrack. |
