An alternative to minis [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-02-05, 10:16 PM I finally got around to posting some pics of my "alternative minatures" - and I don't mean alternative-lifestyle minatures either (not that there is anything wrong with that I say in my very best Jerry Sienfeld . . .)

08-02-05, 10:50 PM Cool man. Been using different size buttons and dice for mini's myself. Love the maps btw. The high elf tree house rocks. The strongholds too. You've done some pretty good work.

08-03-05, 11:13 PM The spools work nicely. I use hershey's miniatures. But the bag is usually empty about halfway through the session :eek:

08-03-05, 11:41 PM It wasn't until I took a second look at your pics to realize that your grid is not 1". I wonder if I could get my PCs to put down there minis and go with a smaller base size. Some of my maps get ridiculously large and having a smaller grid size would definitely come as a blessing.

In a Modern campaign I ran, I used lego for the miniatures and the environment. I had various pieces and could swap weapons and equipment that each player was holding. I could also simulate vehicle and object damage by removing pieces. ;) Everyone liked the utility of it.

The downside? Players got distracted playing with the leftover parts to the BBEG. LOL!

08-04-05, 04:12 PM At a convention I GMed at last year, a friend and I had armies of 200-400 units attacking the PCs. We used wooden cubes for the minitures. Got them from http://sciencekit.com/ , along with some numbered translucent tiles and a few other things. Worked out pretty good.

We also found that cutting up sheets of foam packaging made for some great Instant Fortresses and walls of stone.

08-06-05, 12:47 AM i laminated the grid in the back of the DMG, and i use dry erase markers to draw the map, and 1'' index squares, which i can write on as i need to ta label the diff. creatures. haven't used mini's yet
