an attempt at 'fixing' the bladesinger PRC [Archive] - Wizards Community

alright well i found myself decidedly dissapointed with the bladesinger found in complete warrior while also feeling the one from Races of Faerun was a bit overpowered in its song of celerity ability. Bellow is my attempt at reworking the prc to make it slightly more in line with many other 'Gish' PRCs.
All feedback would be greatly appreciated!

requirements:
keep them the same as those in complete warrior but re add the still spell feat

hit dice: d8
skills: 2+ Int mod

level fort ref will Ability Caster level
1 +0 +2 +2 Bladesong Style +1
2 +0 +3 +3 Bonus feat +1
3 +1 +3 +3 Lesser SpellSong +1
4 +1 +4 +4 Song Of Celerity (2nd) -
5 +1 +4 +4 +1
6 +2 +5 +5 Greater Spellsong +1
7 +2 +5 +5 Bonus Feat +1
8 +2 +6 +6 Song Of Celerity (4th) -
9 +3 +6 +6 +1
10 +3 +7 +7 Song Of Fury +1

All abilities follow the rules as seen in complete warrior

i opted to give them two bonus feats instead of three like the one in Races of Faerun because the third feat seamed a little over powered.
Feats that could be taken would be those found in races of faerun.

I decided to go with no caster incread on the song of celerity levels as they are arguably the most powerful ability the bladesinger gets.

as far as requirements go i figured adding still spell back in may be a good idea as the power level for the class has increased a bit and requirements should reflect this... alternatly i could make weapon finess a requirement and have 'graceful edge' as a bonus feat. for details on this feat check crystal keeps tomb of official feats. basically allows any one handed slashing weapon to be used with weapon finess so long is nothing is in the other hand and it also grants +2 to AC - seems perfect for a bladesinger.

comments? feedback? suggestions?
(also i appologise for posting this in more than one forum however im in need of feedback and wanted to actually catch people asap)

What about spell progression?

sorry, when i posted it, my makeshift table became harder to read, it has spell progression at every level other than 4th and 8th (the song of celerity levels) i felt that was more balanced

I could see that. What about BAB progression? I'm not seeing that on there.

At a glance, I might suggest dropping the HD down to d6, in favor of getting at least one of those caster levels back.

(I'm a fan of the 2ed bladesinger, and was pretty disgusted with what they tried to pass off in 3.5).

well id planned to keep BAB full as seen for the current bladesinger, i really feel it fits with the type of character.

do you mean have d6hp and 8/10 spell progression or make it 9/10?

What I meant was that, in 2ed (which I presume is what you're trying to reproduce), a bladesinger had the equivalent of d6+1 for each HD (d10/2 + d4/2), so dropping the HD to a d6 could be a viable balancing tactic for either 9/10 or 10/10 casting progression, making it a tad more "wizard-like".

If this seems a bit much, you could also drop BaB progression at the levels where you would've halted magic level progression.

hmm seems like a good idea, for balance reasons i wont go for 10/10 (it would make the class be better than most wizard prcs and all gish ones other than abjurant champion.)

so full BAB 9/10 spell progression and d6 hp plus the abilities i listed

would seem better than eldritch knight only i already made eldritch knight more like the knight phantom class (gave it the somatic prowess ability and d8 hp)

For a different tactic, what about condensing the Bladesinger into a 5lvl PrC that's intended to work off of Abjurant Champion or EldKnight?

I'm really not sure I see what you're attempting to fix, all you've done is pretty much take the complete warrior incarnation, and a couple of bonus feats and a few more caster levels.

While I agree that the loss of five caster levels, or the even worse caster progressions, are certainly not the spirit of the original bladesinger, that's only a small fraction of problems with the PrC.

A lot of the abilities don't even work like they should if you're comparing them to the old bladesinger. Sure, being able to cast a quickened spell once a day is an alright ability, but it has nothing to do with the class. Just like the whole restriction of only holding a weapon in one hand and nothing in the other. That has always been a huge gripe with me because the original states that bladesingers would tend to switch to two-handed combat when they had depleted their spells.

Anyway, I do like your caster progression better, I just don't see the point of the extra feats on top of everything else.

For the 5level PrC, how aboot this:

HD: D6
BAB: 1/1
Fort: Bad
Ref: Good
Will: Good
Skill Points: 2+Int mod
1. Bladesong Style, Caster level +1
2. Spellsong, Lesser, Caster level +1
3. Celerity (2nd)
4. Bonus Feat, Caster level +1
5. Spellsong, Greater, Caster level +1
Bladesong Style: +1 at levels 1, 3, 5

How's that look for a decent compromise?

NRT, I think I could get behind that as a good 5-lvl PrC for a bladesinger. I first got irked about the Bladesinger when trying to convert my old 2ed character, and finding him nerfed beyond repair if I went with the "official" bladesinger prestige class.

3. +3 +1 +3 +3 Fast Spellsong
4. +4 +1 +4 +4 Weapon Specialization, Spellcaster Level +1
5. +5 +1 +4 +4 Armored Spellsong, Spellcaster Level +1

CLASS ABILITIES
Weapon and Armor Proficiencies: The Bladesinger gains no new weapon proficiencies. The Bladesinger is proficient in light armor

Spells per Day: When a new bladesinger level is gained at levels 1, 2, 4, and 5, the character gains new spells per day as if she had also gained a level in a spellcasting class she belonged to before adding the prestige class. She does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained, except for an increased effective level of spellcasting. If a character had more than one spellcasting class before becoming an bladesinger, she must decide to which class she adds the new level for purposes of determining spells per day.

Bladesong Style: When wielding a longsword or rapier in one hand and in light or no armor, the blade singer gains a +1 dodge bonus to her AC. This increases by +1 at levels 3 and 5 for a maximum bonus of +3. She may also cast spells when wielding a longsword or rapier in one hand (and having nothing in the other hand) with no penalty.

Defensive Spellsong: the blade singer may substitute a Perform (Dance or Song) check for her concentration checks when casting defensively. She may take 10 when casting defensively.

Fast Spellsong: Once per day, the blade singer may cast a spell of 2nd level or lower with a casting time of 1 standard action as a swift action instead. She may only use this ability when wielding a longsword or rapier in one hand (and having nothing in the other hand).

Weapon Specialization: At level 4, a blade singer gains weapon focus in either longsword or rapier, whichever she has Weapon Focus with. If she has Weapon Focus in both, she must select one weapon to gain the benefit of this feat.

Armored Spellsong: At 5th level, a blade singer may cast arcane spells in light armor with no chance of arcane spell failure.Well, what do you think? Pretty good? t3h 5uckag3? :P

or you could just use this one: (thanks to the people over at the elven netbook)

Hit Die: d8
Entry Requirements
Race: Elf or half-elf.
Base Attack Bonus: +3.
Skills: Balance 2 ranks, Concentration 4 ranks, Perform (sing) 4 ranks, Perform (dance) 2 ranks, Tumble 2 ranks.
Feats: Combat Casting, Combat Expertise, Weapon Focus (longsword, rapier, short sword, or scimitar).
Spells: Ability to cast 1st-level arcane spells.

Class Features
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: A bladesinger gains no weapon proficiency but does gain proficiency with light armor.

Spellcasting: At each level, except for 1st, 5th, and 10th, a bladesinger gains new spells per day (spells known if applicable) and an increased caster level as if she had also gained a level in an arcane spellcasting class she belonged to before entering the bladesinger prestige class. She does not gain any other benefit that class would have gained. If the character had more than one arcane class before becoming a bladesinger, she must decide to which class she adds the new level for purposes of determining spells per day.

Bladesong Initiate (Ex): Upon becoming a bladesinger, the character chooses one weapon for which she has the Weapon Focus feat used to qualify for the class to become her favored weapon. If a bladesinger has more than one applicable weapon, she must choose one. A bladesinger cannot change her favored weapon once she makes her choice. A bladesinger receives a -2 penalty to attack with all weapons other than her favored weapon.

When wielding her favored weapon in one hand, nothing else in the other, and not using a shield, a bladesinger is in the bladesong stance. A bladesinger must use and benefit from the bladesong stance to gain any benefits from the bladesong and spellsong abilities of the bladesinger class. If the bladesinger wears medium or heavy armor, she loses all benefits of the bladesong stance.

When in the bladesong stance the bladesinger gains a dodge bonus to Armor Class equal to her class level, up to a maximum of her Intelligence bonus.

Spellsong Magic: A bladesinger dedicates herself to mixing magical and martial skill into a harmonious art. As a result, when the character becomes a bladesinger, she must forgo study in two schools of magic. The bladesinger must choose two prohibited schools using the rules in the Player's Handbook. She can never again learn spells from those prohibited schools. If she is already a specialist, she cannot choose the same prohibited schools she chose as a 1st-level spellcaster. She can still use the prohibited spells she knew prior to becoming a bladesinger, including using items that are activated by spell completion or spell trigger.

When a bladesinger uses a spell for any of her spellsong abilities, the spell gains a verbal component. Spells used for spellsong abilities cannot be enhanced by the Silent Spell metamagic feat or have their verbal components otherwise negated or countered, such as under the effects of the silence spell or if the bladesinger cannot speak.

Spellsong of Focus (Ex): A 3rd level bladesinger can take 10 when making a Concentration check to cast defensively when in the bladesong stance.

Bladesong Adept (Ex): When in the bladesong stance, a 5th level bladesinger ignores arcane spell failure chance when wearing light armor. Additionally, she can also use her favored weapon to do piercing or slashing damage, but not both at the same time.

Spellsong of Celerity (Ex): At 6th level, a bladesinger can quicken one spell as part of a full attack when in the bladesong stance. Doing this has no effect on the spell's effective level. A bladesinger must make at least one melee attack in any round in which she uses this ability, and he cannot make an attack with anything other than her favored weapon (although if a spell cast in conjunction with this ability requires an attack roll, she can still make the spell's attack).

A bladesinger can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 1 + her Charisma modifier (if any). A bladesinger gains an additional use of this ability at 9th and 12th level.

Spellsong of Presence (Ex): A bladesinger of 8th level can expend a spell as a standard action to use Perform (Singing) in place of Intimidate for a number of rounds equal to 1+ her Charisma modifier (if any). The bladesinger gains a bonus on Intimidation checks equal to the spell level expended. A bladesinger may only use this ability while in the bladesong stance.

Bladesong Feat: A 10th level bladesinger receives Bladesong Style as a bonus feat. If she already has the Bladesong Style feat, she instead selects any feat that has Bladesong Style, Combat Expertise, or Weapon Focus (bladesinger’s favored weapon) as a prerequisite.

Spellsong of Fury (Ex): At 13th level, when a bladesinger makes a full attack while in her bladesong stance, she can make one additional attack in a round at her highest base attack bonus, but this attack and each other attack made in that round takes a -2 penalty. This penalty applies for one round, so it also affects attacks of opportunity the bladesinger might make before her next action. If the bladesinger makes the full attack using spellsong of fury in the same round she successfully casts a spell using spellsong of celerity, the bladesinger only takes a -1 penalty to all attacks for the round.

Bladesong Master (Ex): A 15th level bladesinger adds her Dexterity bonus to melee damage when in the bladesong stance. She also gains a +2 competence bonus to disarm and trip attempts with her favored weapon.

Class Skills (2+ Int modifier): Balance, Concentration, Craft, Decipher Script, Diplomacy, Jump, Knowledge (arcana), Perform, Sense Motive, Spellcraft, and Tumble.

I agree with this completely. If I'm not mistaken the entire Bladesinger idea was from a character created by R.A. Salvatore in which the main character (the original owner of Drizzts panther) was a spellcaster that cast spells WHILE using two weapons. Currently their is a feat called Somatic weaponry in the Complete Mage that should be required for this class IMO.

Hi, I've Been Playing a bladesinger for quite some time now (about 3 years), i've gone epic not a long time ago, and like all of you I've faced the 3.5 nerfing. The way I see it the most character damaging nerf was done to the song of celerity, the whole idea if the bladesinger, at least as i see it, is his ability to cast spells while attacking his enemies without any problem, that's why limiting this ability to a 1/day use limits this characters trademark to a
1/day use.

I understand though that this is a way overpowered feature, so i thought of balancing it in the same way UCsimplime did, by capping the level of spell you may quicken.

On the other hand, the 3.0 bladesinger that appeared on the races of faerun was, perhaps a bit overpowered in that time but not so much now, the Abjurant champion allows the casting of a quickened spell every round as long as it's an abjuration spell and has a full-casting spell progresion (+1 spellcasting level every level). And apart from Fighter/wizards most of the PrC in the Complete Warrior/Divine/Mage/Scoundrel books are a bit more powerful than the ones in the old character books (Fist & Sword, Defenders of the Faith, Tome & Blood, Song & Silence).

That's why the only change i'd make to the complete warrior version is the Song of Celerity...

Song of Celerity: As part of a full-attack action the bladesinger may cast a quickened spell of a level up to one half his class level. That is a 2nd level bladesinger may quicken only 1st level spells or lower, a 10th level bladesinger may quicken spells of 5th level or lower

If still believed to be overpowered, the song of celerity feature could be limited to a number of uses per day equal to the bladesingers intelligence.

I've been playing my bladesinger this way since complete warrior came about (with the aproval of my DM of course, hehehe) and seems pretty balanced compared to the rest of the party members

I've always liked bladesingers, and for the longest time didn't see anything wrong with them. If you read the description of Song of Celerity in the Complete Warrior, it's kinda sketchy on whether it's a 1/day use. However, I think that Taerg Nor's idea sounds great, although I might cap it at 4th level spells, and let the bladesong style's bonus be casting stat, not intelligence. I don't like wizard-only PRCs, which is what they're hinting at.

My version of the Bladesinger can be found here (http://webpages.charter.net/almebezbik/AlmebezbikWiki.html#Bladesinger). Reprinted below as well.

I was playing the Tome and Blood version of the Bladesinger and when I went to convert it to 3.5 is thought they raped it. Lost all kinds of feats and spell casting ability.

A spellcaster PRC that doesn't add a caster level every level is a waste of time, in my opinion. I generally won't even consider them.

Hit Die: d8.
Requirements
To qualify to become a bladesinger, a character must fulfill all of the following criteria.
Race: Elf or half-elf.

Skills: Balance 2 ranks, Concentration 4 ranks, Perform (dance) 2 ranks, Perform (sing) 2 ranks, Tumble 2 ranks.

Class Features
All of the following are class features of the bladesinger prestige class.
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Bladesingers gain no proficiency with any weapon. The gain proficiency with light armor but not with shields.
Spells per Day: At every level gained in the bladesinger class, the character gains new spells per day as if she had also gained a level in an arcane spellcasting class she belonged to before adding the prestige class. She does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained, except for an increased effective level of spellcasting. If a character had more than one arcane spellcasting class before becoming a bladesinger, she must decide to which class she adds the new level for purposes of determining spells per day.
Bladesong Style (Ex): When wielding a longsword or rapier in one hand (and nothing in the other), a bladesinger gains a dodge bonus to Armor Class equal to his class level, up to a maximum of her Intelligence bonus If the bladesinger wears medium or heavy armor, she loses all benefits of the bladesong style.
Lesser Spellsong (Ex): When wielding a longsword or rapier in one hand (and nothing in the other), a bladesinger of 2nd level or higher can take 10 when making a Concentration check to cast defensively.
Song of Celerity (Ex): Once per day, a bladesinger of 2nd level or higher may quicken a single spell of up to 1st level, as if she had used the Quicken Spell feat, but without any adjustment to the spell's effective level or casting time. She may only use this ability when wielding a longsword or rapier in one hand (and nothing in the other). At 4th level and higher, she can quicken a single spell of up to 2nd level. At 6th level and higher, she can quicken two spells per day of up to 3rd level. At 8th level and higher, she can quicken two spells per day of up to 4th level. At 10th level and higher, she can quicken three spells per day of up to 5th level.
Greater Spellsong (Ex): A bladesinger of 6th or higher ignores arcane spell failure chances when wearing light armor.
Song of Fury (Ex): When a 10th level bladesinger makes a full attack with a longsword or rapier in one hand (and nothing in the other), she can make one extra attack in a round at her highest base attack bonus, but this attack and each other attack made in that round take a -2 penalty. This penalty applies for 1 round, so it also affects attacks of opportunity the bladesinger might make before her next action.

Thanks Skara :D, It could be capped at 4th level (that would still allow Fire Shield, Stoneskin and more) but i tried to put it into a pattern +1 every 2 levels because then if you go above level 20 and decide to become a lvl 12 bladesinger i thought that song of celerity should continue improving, mainly because otherwise the PrC would not have any improvement in epic levels, anyways you could just say that song of celerity can only be used for spells of level equal to (Bladesinger lvl/2) - 1, that way by 10th level you would be able to quicken 4th level spells, balance maintained everyone happy. Now, about having charisma as a bonus to defense I think that the idea of the bladesinger is that it is a wizard, im not really sure now, but i think the requirement of the tome and blood version was "ability to prepare and cast 1st level spells" making it unavailable to sorceres and bards (unless they took arcane preparation of course), and besides there are almost none prestiges that let you add your charisma to your AC (only 1 i can think of is mindspy and requires you to cast a spell before getting the bonus) that's the main reason why as a DM i wouldn't probably allow it, but after all i'm not your DM so he gets the final word.

Now spliskamatyshak, if thats how you write it, i think that giving the bladesinger a full caster progression is a bit overpowering, in the tome and blood it had its own casting table so after 10 levels you would be casting 4th level spells, now if you need to cast at least 1st level spell to take the prestige class, and get +1 every level, after 10 levels you would end up casting 6th level spells and that is quite a difference, on the contrary if you make it a half-caster class after the ten levels you would be 1 level away from casting 4th level spells which almost the same as the old one. After all if you make it a full caster class, Bladesinger wouldn't just be a great choice for warrior/mages but for mages all along, having full casting progression + being able to use light armor + taking 10 on concentration and quickening spells on the spot... sounds like a bit too much, though thats just how i see it, thanks for the comment anyway all ideas are appreciated

If that's the case, then boost the martial requirements of the class, needing a higher BAB, a good fort save, or something along those lines. That would keep someone from just taking wizard all the way to bladesinger.
