In the swamp they run into a group of 47 lizard folk - including a Lv 9 Druid and Lv 6/2 ranger/stillguard(lizard folk PrC) who are also looking for the phylactery of undead turning for their cleric(who's back at home). The PC's are Lv 10(8 of them) and include a gnome whom lizard folk are hostile to. How to resolve this encounter w/out a battle. Also the lizard folk are in violation of the border of the elf empire and lizard folk empire so their expedition is illegal. |

Honestly, I don't know how this would avoid coming to blows unless the party and the lizardfolk never know about each other. That is, the party is trudging through the swamp, but the lizardfolk (a more hardy and swamp-adapted people) are taking a different route, but their larger numbers make them easy to spot. The party, naturally, should avoid them...not attack them headlong all at once. Later, inside the tower, they could rely on stealth tactics or somesuch to slip around and past the lizardfolk, yoink the phylactery-thingy, and then run screaming back to the elves who will promptly send a band of their best rangers to dispatch the threat. |

If its in violation to the border laws with the elves, notify them and let them sort it out while you go in and get the item you need. B)Accept the fact that combat is ineviatble and get the preemptive strike in. |
