| Veldarin03-24-06, 03:17 PM | I'm currently a little more than half way though a large wizards of the coast adventure. The players have through a random encounter gained a iron bands. They have yet to use them but I know are saving them for a big encounter, I fear that it will the the Big Bad End Boss a Cleric 17 Hirophant 3. She at the moment has no way to deal with this item, if they role the touch attack the battle will end there, with a single item. I know I could change her spell list to correct for this but as in the adventure she has not reason to she scry the group regually but they have not yet used the item to prvoke such a change. I addtion I would feel like I'm abusing the knowledge of the players have such an item as they are saving it until it makes a big impact it just I dislike the idea of such an anticlimatic final battle. Any suggestion on what to do are welcome. Veldarin P.S My players read the board so I have left out the adventure title and stat's ect specifically, but she does appear to lack any chance of escaping or breaking the bands. |

In other words, create TWO boss fights, and allow them to use the bands for the first one. Thus, they then have a boss fight like normal. If they decide not to use the bands, then they have to fight two bosses back-to-back. (which should overwhelm them if they are at the end) So encourage them to save the bands for the final boss fight. Then "trick" them into using them before the ACTUAL final boss fight. |
| Vharuck03-24-06, 03:40 PM | What, no minions? No silent, stilled Dispel Magic? A Stilled Freedom of Movement spell is worth a fortune to any spellcaster. |
| Veldarin03-24-06, 04:01 PM | The only worry I have about the second boss is that the first is already a very hard fight if they don't think of the iron bands then, It will be a TPK with out a doubt. Vharuck The BBEG has neglicted to take still spell and her minons are iron golem's which are little help in this case. If She where not a pregenerated character I would have had, or like to think I would have had a way to deal with this. My thought is to add a freedom or movement and have it pre-cast of her self before battle starts or adding gaunlets of rust to her items to handle the bands but the PC's have not been using or abusing the item so the boss should not know to change her spells. | AlphaSquirell03-24-06, 04:14 PM | There's the magic in it! If they DON'T use the bands on the first boss, then it was the real boss! Game! They win! If the DO use the bands on the first boss, it was an imposter, time for the REAL boss! Game on! |
| Veldarin03-24-06, 04:41 PM | AlphaSquirell, I'm just worried that the second boss would be far more able to deal with the bands by escaping them or breaking them as such the party that did not use them in the first battle would lack the healing and resouces to survive. The error that he character is so unable to deal with the bands is one mistake see being repeated among many high level characters. |
| AlphaSquirell03-24-06, 04:58 PM | No no no. You're missing the magic of it all. If they fight the first boss, there IS NO SECOND BOSS. (thus, no extra resources are used) If they ruin your fight by using the bands, you ruin their fun by saying "that's not the real boss". It allows you to have ONE good boss fight, whether they use the bands or not. The second boss doesn't exist if they fight the first boss. The purpose of the second boss is to give them a fight if they DON'T actually FIGHT the first boss. |
