Please, for the love of God, quit it with the 101/1001 threads. I know you think they're funny. I know you think they're "just good fun". I know you think that you're just being light-hearted. You are, of course, WRONG, and they're just clogging up the boards. And they're stupid.

11-15-05, 04:25 PM
They really don't clog up the boards that much. Certainly no more than the million posts per day by people asking questions we've dealt with a million times before, like the average of 10 people per week asking about called shots, or all the threads which come down solely to *****ing about a player who doesn't like/know/follow/respect the rules. Tis the nature of open forums -- at least the 1001 threads have some mild entertainment value to them, not just yet another person wanting to know whether you can target someone's head in 3.5.
loaba

11-15-05, 04:25 PM
Regardless, they're still pretty damned annoying. I agree with Eudas, for the love of all that's unholy, stop with the 1001 crap already.

What's wrong with 1001 threads? The comments at the end of Eudas post just spell out that he's one of those people who would rather hug a barbed devil than have a bit of fun with a goblin jester. If you're that against threads that waste peoples time then why for the love of all that the creator attempted to suppress did you start this little niggler!?!?!

Personally, I don't even read 'em anymore - because they're all the same. However, I do feel like quite a few of the 1001 examples in this particular forum have no business actually being here at all. They aren't really dealing with DM issues so much as they're just mindless chit-chat crap.

wow this is kinda of like the "take god out of the pledge of alegiance" issue. well heres the simple answer to that. if you dont believe in god then dont say god. same goes for the "101/1001 threads". if you dont like them then (again stated for like the 4th time) dont read them.

your crying about the "101/1001 threads" is taking up space just like those "101/1001 threads" that you dont like.

Ofcorse, most of the threads has nothing to do with DMěng. People should put em in the general forum. Or Wizards can make an own 1001 forum.

I think the 1001 posts could be great,
As they are currently implemented, they are crap.

If only the original poster on each thread would maintain them, by editing the first post so that it included all of the submitted ideas in order.

Some examples of this (excucuted correctly) are the stickied "Useful DM Links", "Guide to Master DM Competitions", and even the "1001 1001 links" below.

The fact is, that the posters that create these threads make no effort to maintain them, and they become cluttered with crap and garbage. The few gems of ideas buried within are impossible to find.

It is worse than wasted space, it is wasted space and the loss of a few very good ideas (since the good ideas cannot be found among all the crap).

If you start a 1001 thread, do the decent thing and maintain it.

That would require effort. And really, do you need to list out 1001 ways to instigate a TPK? I mean, c'mon, that's just a stupid idea on any level. The OP of that thread simply thought it would be a cute response to this one.

EDIT: is 1001 Famous Last Words really a DM issue? I rather think it is not...
Edymnion

11-15-05, 05:05 PM
Personally, I don't even read them anymore. They stopped being anything helpful years ago, and now they're just started by new posters that think that, somehow, they get "cooler" by having long threads, so they start up all these 1001 things trying to get that.

They're essentially junk threads.
But, as you've seen, if anybody has the guts to actually come out and SAY that, they get jumped on. Personally, if I had any say, I'd get rid of the stupid things. But, I can't, so I just ignore them.

Trust me, if I had the option to put keywords in thread titles on my ignore list, so I would never again see any thread with the number "1001" in it, I would, in a heartbeat.

Ahem, on to the topic at hand. I feel that the 1001 threads are usually amusing. The ones that last are pretty funny, and the ones that don't fade into oblivion like all the other crappy threads. Honestly, it's everyone's board. If you don't like the 1001 threads, don't read them. it can't possibly be that terrible for you to see the title. If you find the mere sight of a thread you don't want to and don't have to read so repulsive, what are you doing have contact with the outside world anyway?

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go read some more of the 1001 reasons that I am an evil DM. I hope the thought of my laughter doesn't offend you guys too much.

Riiiiiiight... And this has what to do with a rules question or advice for a problem in game. This, my trolly friend, is an example of hypocracy. You complain that people post on the wrong board, but this belongs on the general board.

Also, why can't the DM's board have a little humor?

I seem to remember a 1001 thread being stickied in the "What is a player to do?" So, the WizO's apparently at least tolerate them.

Riiiiiiight... And this has what to do with a rules question or advice for a problem in game.
Exactly, this thread, and the 1001 threads which it references, have squat to do with DMing issues. But, there is a difference between the two. The OP placed this thread here, in the DM forum, in order to address a recurring problem on this board in particular.

This, my trolly friend, is an example of hypocracy.
Only if you're an idiot. Where else is he going to post his concern? The OP's comments are relevant to the content in this forum.

Also, why can't the DM's board have a little humor?
Sure it can, but does it really need a 1001 topic concerning player's last words? No, it doesn't. This board should be for serious discussion in relation to DM issues.

Seriously, learn what a term means before you bandy it about.

Sure it can, but does it really need a 1001 topic concerning player's last words? No, it doesn't. This board should be for serious discussion in relation to DM issues.

"serious discussion in relation to DM issues" invariably concerns immature players and sticky outside relationships, for most of which the advice is "talk to him/her/them" or "kick him/her/them out of your game."

One of the purposes of these boards is to serve as a place where DnD players can gather and tell their stories about their games. Considering the unspoken rule that all such stories actually came from a real game somewhere, several 1001 threads help to accomplish this.

Other ones are just lists of suggestions/ideas that can be accepted or thrown out at the reader's leisure. The fact that they're titled as 1001 threads is generally irrelevant.

And other than that, yes, many 1001 threads are worthless filler. But don't let that incriminate the worthwhile minority.

And those types of threads should probably get the heave ho as well. The DMs forum should be a serious place to discuss your game and how to improve it. DMing for your 14yr old girlfriend (and dealing with your jealous friends who don't have girlfriends) should maybe not rate. :D

They can we just have to agree on it. Currently we are attempting to divide the RPG Classifieds into 6 or 7 subdivisions and the moderators have said it is possible. See the Board post here: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=534863

They may be useless and inane and whatnot. If ya don't like it, then don't read 'em. Besides, things like that remain popluar for a few weeks, then get bumped down into the unread pages.

These sorts of threads pop up on every forum I've been on. Ya just learn to ignore them, 'cause there's honestly no point in fighting over it. "It takes up space".....? Yush. a whole half an inch on your screen, if your screen is small. Gods forbid.

Besides, if we're gonna be following these rules, then this entire thread should be in a more appropriate forum, because this thread has nothing to do with DMing.
Khastalphos

11-15-05, 09:06 PM
Just let messageboard Darwinism breed them out. If they're really that bad and people really don't like them, they'll quickly go away when no one posts to them. If, on the other hand, they stay around for a while and receive many responses, then you may just be out of touch with the desires of this messageboard community and may want to find a new place to rant.
Edymnion

"It takes up space".....? Yush. a whole half an inch on your screen, if your screen is small. Gods forbid. [/COLOR]No, each one takes up 1/25th of the front page. As in, the default for forum pages is that they can only display 25 non-stickied posts at any given time. Which means every junk 1001 thread that gets bumped over and over is taking up a valuable piece of board real-estate.

Of course, there is nothing that we can do about it, so we just don't bother to read those threads, but it is still annoying that the "good" (although, not all threads getting bumped are good by any stretch of the imagination) threads are getting bumped off the front page by "1001 Reasons Why Bards are Gay" threads.

Not to mention all the 1001 threads are usually stupid and unfunny. The only exception to this was the one with the Eberron airship pirates, which was hilarious but entirely situational.

Seriously, folks. "1001 famous last words"? Might have been funny years ago. "1001 ways to tell that your an evil DM"? Lame. "1001 things in D&D that sound wrong, but arent"? Why is this even on the "What's a DM to Do?" forum?

On the other hand, threads like "1001 Tricks and Traps" have the potential to be useful if they don't attract 1001 random idiots spamming them with whatever they think is funny or stupid that day.

I don't mind 1001 threads. They can be anywhere from a source of humor to a source of information; and I don't see why they're so annoying to everyone. I mean, if you don't want to read them, don't click on them... it isn't as though they're taking over the forums to the point that they're crowding out other threads.

Just a quick persual of the board yeilded these terribly important threads:

- Random fight between two charters with differnt classes -- who will win?

- Please tell me this rule it would take me 10 seconds to find on d20srd.org!

- Look at me! I'm an Alignment Thread!

- Look at me, I'm a thread for people to lie about the core rules in!

- Is X a good class/race/spell/rule? I'm incapable of forming my own opinions.

- Bashing bards #123

- I AM MAKING DEMANDS TO PEOPLE ON THE INTERNET!

- Look at me, I'm an Alignment Thread!

- Let me tell you a gaming story that probably should be on a list thread.

- If you don't like Alignment, you're a moron who doesn't know how to use it (Look at me, I'm an Alignment Thread!)

- OH NOES! Anime bad in game grrr!

- I just want to say this spell/feat/class rocks/sucks/is balanced.

Do you really want to lose these precious memories just so people can have a little DnD related (loosely in some cases) fun?

I also like it when those "Oops...please delete this" threads run on for 5+ pages.

I also love it when people make up stupid points about "space"...that is too funny. As if using the scroll/click of a mouse is so monumental a task that doing so should warrant a complete removal of what some people find enjoying. How wonderfully ignorant sounding and selfish!

Awwww, I love reading those! Almost as much as I love it when someone gets mad at someone else for wanting to run an evil game.

But here's a quick question.

1001 threads are obviously not going to go away anytime soon, board darwinism and all. So why do we care so much if this guy hates them? He does have a right to hate them, and this being an open forum, he does have the right to express that (his minor mistake of not posting this in the Board buisness board aside.) So if we realy want to silence this, why don't we just stop responding and let this thread die into oblivian?

Okay, I guess thats two quick questions, but who's realy THAT nitpickish?
Slyde Shadowdart

11-16-05, 01:41 AM
Vaal, if you get rid of the post types you've given as examples, what would you read?

Seriously. Some people seem to forget that the community of players isn't static. When a new player comes along and finds that there's a place to talk about being a new DM, and he/she has their first alignment problem, is your line of reasoning to extend to them not asking and receiving help, simply because you're "tired of seeing them?" (BTW, this paragraph isn't to Vaal or any specific "you", it's a general query.)

Maybe saying "search for threads about that" would be okay. Oh wait, no, the search function has been down forever. (And as far as searching the cache/site using google, you've got to be kidding me. I'd ask way before I'd ever waste my time trying to pick the dross that comes up.)

I know this whine thread is about the 1001 posts, but you're all quickly delving into the region of self-defeat. Why is a forum there at all, if not for discussion and entertainment? (And for those prepared to come back with the "but it's not relevant to the DM/Player/Etc. forum", say that the nex time you post to a thread about <<insert topic that has nothing to do with DMing but that you don't mind seeing>>.)

Don't want to read, don't have to click. And to those that say "it takes up space", well, it isn't your server space, and is having to skip a post really exacting that much of a toll from you? If so, perhaps you should go lie down. I don't know how you'd ever get through an actual game session if not clicking an internet thread is so taxing.

Note that there is no malice intended by this post (although there is some light-hearted ribbing, which if you can't take, you need much thicker skin; if you can't laugh at yourself and all that).

they don't take up any more room than this post. And "room" on a electronic medium is a pretty nebulous concept.

Obviously, a few extra threads are a negligible strain on the WOTC servers, but they do *clutter* the boards, which is annoying. They keep much worthier threads from being noticed when they're bumped to the top.

I don`t think the "1001 threads" take more space than all the post whining about the "1001 threads". If you don`t like em don`t read em.

Certainly, valid point. He doesn't have to read them. But all you 1001 fangirls (and boys) don't need 9 different 1001 threads on TPKs and killing players, do you? It's excessive, and unnecessary in that sense. I don't have a problem with the 1001s in general, just the constant rehashes of the same old ones again and again.

The moderators here are relatively laissez-faire (and I prefer it that way), so stupid questions and "1001" lists are just the price we pay for using a free resource.

Now, if worthy threads are getting bumped, that means the general on-line community is passing up quality discussion in favor of crap. If anything, that only tells me I gotta surf somewhere else until the average I.Q. in the D&D boards ticks upwards again.

This thread belongs on the metaboards (RPG Boards Business) rather than WaDMtD. The metaboards is where you go to post threads about improving the web community so that when they become discussions of how to do this they can be locked.

Assuming that the quote above is correct, then if a WizOp would be so kind as to move the thread where it should be, that would be wonderful.

I have an idea:

watch the "Whats a DM to DO" boards for further developments!

I promise something within 2 hours (after I've eaten lunch).

Nice looking format and such.
Good luck with that, olshanski.

We'll see if there are any takers for my 1001 traps thread.

Personally, I believe that there will be few to no entries.
The people who seem to like posting on 1001 lists tend to throw out half-baked ideas with little consideration of whether it is actually a good idea:

"anti-gravity with spikes on ceiling!"

Anyone can say it... lets you put real stats on it, and give it a reason for existing!

No, the problem is that every 1001 thread bumps another, more constructive thread off the front page of the boards. Which means the junk threads kill the good ones. Which is a bad thing.
Now I can see three things wrong with this logic:
1) If it's at the bottom of the page, it's less constructive and less well enjoyed than the threads above it. Like the 1001 thread that knocked it off.
2) If you can't turn the page to "rescue" your "constructive" thread, you're just lazy, and obviously the thread couldn't have been that important or interesting if you don't want to take the effort to read it.
3) It's not a junk thread if people enjoy it enough to post on it. How can you call something that brightens many people's days junk? Once more, this is their board as much as anybody elses. If they want to put the 1001 thread up there, and it stays alive, it's because people are enjoying it, and it isn't junk,

Now, I don't mean to offend anyone, nor do I mean to imply that anyone on this board is lazy. I do not mean to single out Edymnion. He just summed up the argument of the people who are against the 1001 threads nicely (and in a way I could counter-argue :D ).

Finally, I don't see the point of this thread. I haven't looked at some of the second and third page yet, but it looks like it's descending into a flame war, which is less constructive than the threads it's fighting against. Now, this fight is ineffectual. No matter how much people complain about them, the 1001 threads are here to stay. The Wizos aren't going to close them, because enough people enjoy them that it's just not good Public Relations to go and close them down. Also, people are either going to ignore the OP's letter, and keep posting 1001 threads as they see fit, or they're going to defend them, and the people who don't like the 1001 threads are going to rush in and attack them, and pretty soon everyone is going to be attacking each other. So why bother?

Heck, someone is probably going to attack me for this thread, I'll take offense, hopefully not say something I'll regret later, and the cycle will continue until a Wizo comes in and shuts this thing down.

Oh, and a troll is a Monster in the monster manual. You're all humans. Stop calling each other trolls.

Look on the boards for a 1001 traps thread started by Olshanski.

It's my constructive response to the complaints about 1001 threads.
