| StrahdVonZarovich09-15-04, 02:59 AM | Greetings to all of you ! Some of you might remmeber me from a while ago, thats the right the french guy whose english sucks ! Not so long ago, I created a huge campaign named the Chaos Sphere, but judging that my players weren't ready yet, I've put it on hold for a while. Now, I've made another campaign in which they're suppose to 'escort' a dwarven merchant thru some mountrains deeps which separates the kingdoms of Tethyr and Cormyr...The group is made of the following : Dwarven Slayer/Killer Fighter lvl-8 CG Halfling Rogue lvl-5 CN Elven Sorceress lvl-4 CN Human Knight(a power class I grabed a while ago on Kazaa) lvl-5 LG ''Human'' female Ranger lvl-1 (but being a lycanthope she's the equivalent of a 10th lvl char) CG NPCs : Dwarven Sorcerer (disguised as a merchant) CE Human girl (commoner lvl-1) LG The sorcerer is in fact, an evil dwarf who hides his alignment thru an helm of undectable alignment...and he keeps the girl by his side at all time, since he needs her safe and in perfect health, 'cause he needs to sacrifice her on some special altar which will open the entrance to an hidden and ancient temple, in which resides the soul of an ancient(but truly evil) goddess. He posses a pendant which can absorb any souls, and performing a special ritual he think he will be able to abord the soul of that goddess. During the night, goblins came and captured the girl(they had to rest for the night, even while they're in caves deep in the mountain). They followed the goblin trails the next day which led them to their fortress, a kinda huge one too. The enemy force, saw them from their towers, and send an entire batallion of enemy troops(about 20 goblins, 2 hill-giants, and 2 4th lvl Orgre Barbarians) they wipe them out in about 5 turns ! If your wondering, why the goblins keep the girl in that thing, its because they're also keeping a young dragon(red) domesticated since his birth by the tribe Shaman, which demands regular sacrifice, in order to serve this tribe. Now, what would you do, if you were me ? Keeping them from entering the fortress or...? Seriously the Lycanthrope Ranger can do something like 30-40 hp of damage easily in one round. And the fighter can do about...30 easy too. The others are pretty standard. Even my hill-giants only lasted about 2 turns, and I even added some extra hps, on top of giving him MAX HP ! Here are the dwarven fighter stats, I can't find the lycanthrope one for now, so I'll post it later : STR 17 DEX 17 CON 18 INT 10 WIS 10 CHA 10 FORTITUDE +10 RFLEX +6 WILL +2 AC 20 (+4 ARMOR-CHAIN SHIRT, +3 DEX, +4 VS GIANTS, TROLLS, AND OGRES) MELEE +9/+2 GRAPPLE +6 RANGE +9 INIT +3 HP : 94 FEATS : MONKEY-GRIP, TWO WPN FIGHTING, WPN-FOCUS : HEAVY-FLAIL & DWARVEN WARAXE, DODGE, WPN SPECIALIZATION : DWARVEN WAR-AXE & HEAVY-FLAIL, TWO WPN DEFENSE, IMPROVE TWO WPN FIGHTING, IMPROVE TWO WPN-DEFENSE . WPN DAMAGE : HEAVY FLAIL +11/+6 1D10+7 DWARVEN WARAXE +6, 1D10+5 Now, I might have done some mistakes, lemme know if you find some. I don't know if this help but, yeah they're both masterwork (his weapons), and in MITHRIL ! Does that change anything though(for the Mithral part, I know that Masterwork means +1 to both of his melee attacks) ? On top of that here are all his hit die rolls and his feats : 1-1d10, hp 10, MonkeyGrip, Two Weapon-Fighting 2-1d10, hp 7, Weapon Focus : Heavy Flail 3-1d10, hp 3, Dodge 4-1d10, hp 9, Weapon Specialization : Dwarven Waraxe as well as a +1 ability boost score which goes straigh to his dextirity score. 5-1d10, hp 10 6-1d10 hp ??? Thats where I lose it...once I'll get my hands on his updated sheet, everything will make more sense I guess ! Also he can't have the wpn-specialization in the Dwarven waraxe before aquiring the proper Weapon Focus feat for that ! His hp doesn't make sense either, gotta admit that...One last question how many feats is he suppose to have at lvl-6 ? According to my PHB v3.5 he should have about 7 right ? |
| General Dorsey09-15-04, 03:24 AM | I think I may have figured out a few problems. 1) A level 6 fighter's attack bonuses start at +6. You have them at +3. You didn't account for that in the encounter. From what I see, the fighter should have a melee bonus of +6, Grapple +6, and ranged +6. Add the +4 heavy flail that he has focus in and it becomes +11 to hit. The waraxe would be +13. However, a level 6 fighter should not have a weapon of any type at +4, let alone +6. That is a bit too powerful. Again, you probably didn't account for that in the encounter. 2) You must be giving max hit points or the player is one heck of a roller. 72 is the maximum he can have at level 6 with a Constitution of 18. Seems unlikely. Again, when you allow the character to be maxed out, and then don't account for it, then you will not be able to create a challenging encounter. 3) Looking at the feats, the fighter cannot have Weapon Specialization in the Waraxe. He doesn't have Weapon Focus in Waraxe. He does have it for the flail (I'm assuming heavy flail since that is the weapon he is wielding). 4) The damage output should be: a. Right hand flail, left hand waraxe: 1d10+7, 1d10+7 b. Right hand waraxe, left hand flail: 1d10+9, 1d10+5 The way I see the attack routine: Right Hand Flail: +5/+0 damage 1d10+7 Left Hand Waraxe: +5/+0 damage 1d10+7 OR Right Hand Waraxe: +5/+0 damage 1d10+9 Left Hand Flail: +5/+0 damage 1d10+5 It seems unlikely that he would hit 3 times out of 4 each round. I think he would hit with the first two hits only (maybe not even then...). This would mean that he is doing an average of 25 points of damage in either case. 4) His AC should include a +1 shield bonus for the two-weapon defense. 5) You have too much diversity in class levels as well. It is too difficult to create challengin adventures when the characters range from level 3 to 10. The 3rd level characters are too threatened and/or the 10th level ones are not. As for the adventure itself: I think you may want to start things over and use only the standard races/classes and keep the levels even. At least until you are more familiar with the rules. |
| deadDMwalking09-15-04, 11:59 AM | General Dorsey made some valid points - but I think you had written the attack bonus with the weapon (I hope) and not the "enhancement bonus" of the weapon. So, I assume you are saying he has +4 to hit with the flail? Perhaps not. The math doesn't line up. First of all, the dwarf may use the Dwarven Waraxe in one hand. The dwarf may use a heavy flail in one hand by using monkey grip. That gives him a -2 to his attack. He has the two weapon fighting feat, but neither weapon is light. He suffers an additional -4 on each attack with those weapons (-6 flail, -4 dwarven waraxe). To have specialization in Dwarven Waraxe he must have Weapon Focus first. Assuming he does have Weapon focus in both he will get a +1 to attack (-5 flail, -3 dwarven waraxe). As a 6th level character with good base attack bonus he should have a +6/+1 BAB. With strength (+3) he has a normal attack of +9/+4. Using the Dwarven Waraxe in his primary hand and the flail in his secondary hand, his attack routine should looke like this +6/+4/+1/-1 +6 Dwarven Waraxe/+4 Flail /+1 Dwarven Waraxe /-1 Heavy Flail. It should be obvious that he isn't going to hit much. The waraxe damage (if used in his primary hand) should be 1d10 +3 (str) +2 (spec) or 1d10+5. The damage on the heavy flail should be 1d10+1. He may reverse the hands, in which case the axe does 1d10+3 and the flail does 1d10 + 3. Whichever weapon is used in the "off-hand" gets only 1/2 the bonus to damage from strength. These numbers will of course be higher if he does have a Masterwork weapon or a magical weapon. I can see the goblins abandoning their place. But first the shaman will mount the dragon and attempt to kill the party. If the fight turns against him he will fly away. The dragon will not land anywhere near the party. Instead he will remain aloft, and use his breathweapon as much as possible. The dragon is not going to be nearly as afraid of the party if he is not in melee range. In addition, if the dragon has fly-by attack he can make a good bite or claw while waiting for his breath weapon to recharge. The sorcerer can be a very effective partner. Especially if he has a scroll of protection from arrows for the dragon. Adding mage armor to the dragon can also be powerful. And shield, etc. The party will have quite a fight because they won't have a good way of fighting a flying opponent. |
| StrahdVonZarovich09-15-04, 07:09 PM | My mistake, I think I've got all of this wrong, anyhow I'll look at his Char-sheet this night, when he'll come over. I'll post the correct ones (his stats) later tonight. I, too, though he would have an attack bonus of at least +6/+1 since he's lvl-6. EDIT : Stats updated, not sure if those are the good ones, since he left before I could finish seeing it. But thats a bit more 'regular' if you ask me though. |
| General Dorsey09-16-04, 02:49 AM | With the updated information, he looks better...but there are still some problems. 1) You are right. He has too many feats. He should have 4 from being a fighter and 3 from being a character. That is 7. He has 9. If you are using the Flaws from Unearthed Arcana, then it is possible. However, if not, then he has 2 extra feats. 2) His weapons being made of mithril have no bearing on the ease with which he wields them. According to the SRD: In the case of weapons, this lighter weight does not change a weapon’s size category or the ease with which it can be wielded (whether it is light, one-handed, or two-handed). So, this means that his attack bonuses should now be: (+6 BaB, +3 Str, +1 Focus, -4 two non-light weapons, -2 monkey grip for the flail) The way I see the attack routine: Flail attack bonus: +4/-1 Waraxe attack bonus: +6/+1 Primary Hand damage 1d10+5 Off-Hand damage: 1d10+3 Note that these are including his Weapon Specialization since I don't know if he plans on keeping them or not. If not, then reduce the damage by -2 as appropriate. 3) I was incorrect on his hit points being max. His maximum is 84. This means that he is at 80% of the maximum he could have rolled. Being only level 6, I see this as possible. My mistake. I don't think he is actively cheating. Please don't think that. I do think he may be making some honest mistakes. It sounds like you all may be relatively new to gaming and character creation. I recommend downloading some character creation software. There are some decent ones out there that are actually free. Some are online only, others allow you to save them online for free. Some let you purchase updates for the non-core books. Personally, I think they may help with the accuracy of the character creation process. And I also feel that their is too much of a spread of levels between the characters. This will continue to cause problems with the adventures you run. |
| Kheldren09-16-04, 03:13 AM | A point on his attacks - you have not listed him as having Improved Two-Weapon Fighting, without which he only gets one attack with his off-hand weapon. Considering how knowledgeable the other posters are I am surprised they missed this... Also I would check if he is remembering that he only gets multiple attacks when he does not move (unless it's a 5' step). It's an easy mistake to make if you don't really understand the rules. |
| StrahdVonZarovich09-16-04, 03:30 AM | General Docsay : No offense, but we've been playing 3e and 3.5 since they're out, and god we do know how to make a char sheet ! I just haven't the most recent version of his char, I'll wait til tomorrow or maybe friday for that. Just be patient. I know that there's a few char creation program out there on the net, I even have one myself to make my NPCs. Its called Wizards etools. Personaly I prefer making them 'by the hand' , but I gonna admit that it is really faster with this program. Khelbren he does have that feat too(look at my first post), just forgot mentioning it ! That makes 9, when he's suppose to have only 7, I'm defenetely (spelling someone ?) gonna have a talk with him in a day or two. |
| General Dorsey09-16-04, 01:25 PM | General Docsay : No offense, but we've been playing 3e and 3.5 since they're out, and god we do know how to make a char sheet ! That's not what I meant. Sorry. Sometimes when I'm really tired after work, I don't type what I really mean. What I was trying to say is that with all the options that are available in the game you are running, it may take more time to get all the little quirks down. The non-standard races and classes can cause unforeseen problems. That's why they are non-standard. That doesn't make them bad choices though. It just takes a bit more work on everyone's part to make sure they remain balanced with the other characters. I also like making my characters by hand. I've found that a few or the programs don't calculate things very well. I know that eTools had a few problems in the beginning like not adding in the Constitution bonus to hit points (it's since been fixed). I know that once in a while I'll want to do something that I can't do with the software. I usually use a spreadsheet I created to keep track of things for me. I then write it down by hand on a character sheet. Looks like I also missed one more thing on his attack routine. Add +1 to all his attack rolls. I forgot to add in the masterwork quality of mithril. See what happens when I'm tired. Are you using Unearthed Arcana? If so, then check to make sure he has chosen two flaws to allow him to have the extra feats. |
| StrahdVonZarovich09-17-04, 01:23 AM | Thats ok, I think I was a bit harsh with you too. I apologize. Yes we DO use Unearthed Arcana, and I think he've got 2 flaws, not sure which one though. In that case, he'd be legit ? |
| General Dorsey09-17-04, 06:56 AM | If he has the two flaws, then he would be legit with the feats. I would, as DM, make him roleplay his flaws though. If the flaws aren't roleplayed, then I feel that they are simply a mechanic to gain extra feats. If they are roleplayed, then they become a way of defining the character. The same goes for any traits he may have. |
