When you are describing something to your players do you use analogies?

Sometimes. "As your mace connects with his fleshy head, it explodes with the same sound and flare as would an over-ripe melon." Is this what you're talking about?

Well...I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

What, no analogy to what staying there was like?

All the damn time. Best way to have a player understand something is to relate it to a real world equivelant.

I try not to, for personal reasons. I'm a writer by profession, and while I find analogies to be good for quick comparisons to unknown things, I think that ultimately I can convey a much more powerful and personal image without them.

Of course, that's because of a personal style in speech and writing, not because I think there's something wrong with analogies...

Why wouldn't you? It seems that somethings involved with magic would need a comparsion to be understood. Of course, some descriptions (A giant meteor flies out of the sky and explodes on impact, dealing blah blah) don't need it.
