| Lord Ian Stark03-28-06, 12:20 PM | Deleted reply as the OP changed the main post to a totally different question. :) |
| wrecan03-28-06, 12:21 PM | What upgrade are you talking about? Why do you think you need anything other than the corebooks? How can it be good for marketing to stop putting out new products? You confuse me. |
| Mock2603-28-06, 12:54 PM | Do some google and e-bay searches and you will find a lot of 2nd and 1st edition D&D products. I forget the name of the site, but there is one site that sells PDF file downloads of nearly everything 1st and 2nd edition. As for still supporting 2nd edition, it best that you not discuss that here. While most of the people here don't care either way, there is a small core of people who will ridicule you because you play 2nd edition. He is talking about upgrading from 2nd edition and switching over to 3.0 or 3.5, as in giving up 2nd edition. And, Wizards of the Coast is still putting out new products. If you are referring to still putting out new 2nd edition products, why would they do that? That would be like Sony going back and manufacturing beta VCR's. Sure, some people would buy them, but the money involved with putting it out wouldn't be worth it given that they are geared towards putting out DVD players and VHS players. Take care and have a great day.... ciao, john. |
| revnk03-28-06, 01:05 PM | Does WOTC still sell 2nd edition anywhere? WOTC never sold 2E at all. It was a TSR product, and TSR no longer exists. There's certainly a thriving market in old 1E and 2E rulebooks over on eBay and any other resale markets out there, but you'll never see new "official" 2E materials anywhere. Which--as an answer to your original post--may be a reason to "upgrade." Of course, a silver lining to using a "dead" product line is that you'll never have to worry about a lot of rules changes. Then again, that's also the downside. In any case, that's the situation. Good luck to you, whatever you play. |
| Galadan_Ironstone03-28-06, 01:09 PM | Blah! |
| Cantankerous03-28-06, 01:22 PM | Amazing how rude people are. You know Lord Ian Stark, you could just click over a posting. What is more of a waste of your time? Replying to a post or just skipping over it? I don't think a snide comment is really required or appropriate. Why do some people think they are in charge or monitoring/owning/dictating these boards. As for "old" stuff I’ve found Ebay to be great. I'm an original Basic/1st Edition player from 1980. I've reluctantly switched to 3.5 'cause everyone else wanted to play it. I was trying for a 1st Edition campaign. I picked up some 1st Edition stuff on Ebay for collectors purposes. There is a lot out there of 2nd Edition too. Good hunting to you . You know, unless the guy has an IQ three points south of dirt, he would have full well known that he could simply Google it. If he's not savvy enough to figure out to do this search on Google, then your telling him about Ebay is about useless, since he wouldn't have been able to navigate to it. That being the case, L_I_S came to a very understandable conclusion... namely that this was a troll post. I agree with him. I also ascert that trolls should be well barbequed whenever possible. It improves their taste. Isshia |

Well seeing how the OP totally changed the topic of his original post making my post obsolete, I understand your confusion. It was originally a rant on how WOTC is making people dish out more money for no other reason than greed. I understand your confusion and will edit it as the OP changed his post. |
| OravennasBrother03-28-06, 01:31 PM | Try contacting WOTC customer service and ask about the sale sight for PDF's of older material. In that one way, even if no other can be agreed upon, WOTC makes an improvement on 2nd edition -all the PDF stuff is chaeper (by a fair margin) than the original material. Items which once sold for 15$+ now run $5-$7 when purchased as PDF. OK Its only cheaper if, like me you find computer files as easy to use as paper. |
| Galadan_Ironstone03-28-06, 01:37 PM | My appologies since the OP has changed. Prehaps your comments were very fitting to his original compliants. |
| revnk03-28-06, 04:17 PM | I thought about deleting my post just so I could join the in-crowd on this thread, but then I decided not to because it was friendly and vaguely supportive. But I have wondered what it would look like if a thread consisted exclusively of deleted posts. That would be funny. Kind of. Oooh! Maybe I should come back later and delete this one! It'll be like internet performance art. Kind of. |

While most of the people here don't care either way, there is a small core of people who will ridicule you because you play 2nd edition. I would never ridicule someone for playing a previous edition. I am simply not able to see the virtue of staying with a clunky, needlessly complicated set of rules. |

That is what the quote button is for, so if someone edits a post you are replying to you don't look like an idiot, because it looks like what you are saying, has nothing to do with what you are replying to... if you quote them, you get them:) |
| Mock2603-28-06, 06:56 PM | I would never ridicule someone for playing a previous edition. I am simply not able to see the virtue of staying with a clunky, needlessly complicated set of rules. Ah, but if they were truly a set of clunky, needlessly complicated set of rules, then why are so many people still playing it? You may think that they are clunky and needlessly complicated, but a lot of people see the 3.x combat rules as being clunky and needlessly complicated. Watching a 3.x battle, in my opinion, is like watching a game of Magic: The Gathering, but instead of throwing down cards the players and DM are throwing down feats and attacks of opportunity and more feats and more attacks of opportunity. But, these are merely opinions of different people. Take care and have a great day.... ciao, john. |
| VirgilCaine03-28-06, 10:57 PM | Ah, but if they were truly a set of clunky, needlessly complicated set of rules, then why are so many people still playing it? There aren't so many people still playing it, that's the thing. |
| Mock2603-28-06, 11:07 PM | There aren't so many people still playing it, that's the thing. You'd be surprised! I'd put the number at upwards of 25% of all people playing D&D do not play 3.0 or 3.5! It doesn't seem like there are that many because there aren't all that many forums for them, and most of them certainly wouldn't post here! I did a few informal polls, one at the old GenCon forums, and a couple amongst gamers at GenCon, and the number was actually quite high (upwards of 40%), including a bunch of members of the RPGA who still, in non-RPGA sanctioned events, preferred to play 2nd edition. But, this was just an informal poll by myself and I'm sure that there is a great discrepency there, which is why I say the number is closer to 25%. Take care and have a great day.... ciao, john. |

Take care and have a great day.... ciao, john. must have been really informal, as I have met 100s if not thousands of D&D players over the last few years, I work in a game shop, and we run open games all the time, and I don't remember meeting one that played 2nd ed in the last 2 years. Even the old grognards I knew that held onto 2nd ed for awhile have even switched over to 3x |
| blackjackg03-29-06, 12:36 PM | As far as research methods go, I'm afraid yours are inherently flawed. The crowd in a game store is more likely to play the newest version of the game, because they're in there to buy the new expansions. Old 2e standbys like me wouldn't go into game shops all that much. There's just nothing there for us to buy anymore except for the occasional tube of dice. At the same time, polling long-time RPGers would give you a flawed result too because a large portion of current 3.xers (I hesitate to say a majority, but it's likely) have only taken up gaming very recently. They would never have played 1e or 2e. The old-timers are much much more likely to play old versions of the game, for whatever reason (maybe they prefer it, maybe they can't afford the new books, maybe they're just feeling nostalgic.) As I mentioned in passing earlier, I prefer second edition. I don't find it any more unnecessarily complicated than 3rd edition (though they both have their moments, for sure.) It's a matter of taste. |
| Seldriss03-29-06, 01:09 PM | Indeed, there are many things from the Second Edition that i miss. Planescape for one. Hey, there are even some things from the 1st edition that i miss ! I must be old :( |
