Kragar's Shadow

The other day I was struck with a silly idea to throw into my campaign: how about a travelling circus based off the Muppet Show? This got me thinking about how I would portray the characters and that ultimately they'd end up as various monster races.

Most of them would end up being bards, rogues, or experts. But what I'm looking for is help with races.
Kermit - Bullywug?
Miss Piggy - Orc
Fozzie - Bugbear
These seemed pretty straight forward. But what do I make the Great Gonzo?

I haven't figured out what purpose this would have. General silliness. Murder mystery. Theiving ring. Front for a smuggling/slaving operation. Any suggestions and ideas are welcome.

I think you could go with a goblin, they generally have big noses, gonzo had kinda a high pitched voice as generally golbins do depended on your DM's mindset. I'm not so sure if goblins have a chicken fetish.

The other option you have to go with awakened animals. :D

Yeah, I think Goblin might be the best choice. Gonzo - at least according to later movies ;) - is an alien, so you're not gonna find a real dead on match for him.

Gonzo could be a kobold. Gonzo and Deekin kind of sound and act similar.

Remember that Gonzo was a "one of a kind" creature. Before the "Muppets From Space" movie, he had never met anyone or anything that was even similar to him. He had always been classified as a "Whatever" when people asked about his species.

A major part of his character was being completely unique and not fitting in.

As such, I think you would have to create a new monster to fit him. It just wouldn't be right for him to be something generic like a goblin.

Changed my mind. Gonzo is a unique half-kenku/ half-fairy dragon bard (thanks for calling me on the uniqueness of Gonzo, Aliquid). Sweetums could be a firbolg or hill giant. And Animal could be a half-orc barbarian/bard. In fact, I guess it goes without saying that all Muppets have at least a few levels in bard.

Just remember that Fonzie doesn't have near as many ranks in Perform (Comedy) as he thinks he does. ;)

I'd second the Awakened Bear for Fonzie myself.

Yeah, I think awakened would work for alot of them. Such as Ralph as an awakened dog. Miss Piggy would definatly need at least one Lv in Barbarian.

Could run the campaign mostly in a dreamscape like that in HoH.

I assume that you will also have a high level human wizard with low ranks in Alchemy (Dr. Bunsen Honeydew) and his erstwhile but hapless half-elf assistant midlevel expert (Beaker) travelling in one of the circus wagons, selling to the unwary many wonderful potions that never do what they were advertised to. Because I'd be very disappointed if you didn't. And of course a half-orc barbarian/expert who runs around chasing chickens with a cleaver while yelling "bork! bork! bork!" would also be very much in order.

I'd give Statler and Waldorf (lots of) "surprise" levels in sorcerer or something like just in case the PCs decide to take on the two old men who keep making fun of them. You know, because they won't do anything unless provoked, but shouldn't be defenseless if they provoke the players.

Anyway, sounds like a fun campaign. Use the Star Wars d20 rules if you want to recreate Mark Hamill's guest appearance at some point.

Peace out.

You're forgetting the Inter-Galactic hero of "Pigs in Space" and heart throb of the soap "Veternarian's Hospital", Link Hogthrob.

I'd say Bard, and a total coward.

Man, that is a great idea.

One of may favorite episodes is when Alice Cooper guest on the show. He spends the time with the monsters and tried to get Gonzo to sell his soul away. Throw a small level devil or something to do the same.

You can't leave out Dr. Teeth. After all he leads the band. Rolf has to be on piano and John on the sax.

And lastly you needed not-so direrat to play Rizzo the rat. An awakend dire rat with levels in Rogue for sure.

I think overall I'd like to stay away from the awakened animals idea. It's a decent way to arrange the troupe and handle certain members, but it feels like there has to be a high level druid creating it as opposed to a circus that happened on it's own.

I'd totally forgotten Bunsen and Beaker!

Gonzo probably should be a unique creation or at least race. So how should we craft him?
I'm thinking: Outsider
Small Natural armour, DR or regeneration. Gonzo was always getting hurt but bounced back.
-2 Wis. His stunts could only be the product of bad judgement.
+2 Cha. Gonzo got all the chicks.

Beaker a half-elf? Mmmm, ok I guess. Intelligence of 4 or 5 maybe, but a wisdom score of 15 or so. Professor Bunsen Honeydew would have an intelligence score of 15 or more with a wisdom score of 3 to 5 maybe?

And, for the record, the Fraggles Rock!

Fraggles ROCK! Bwah-hahahahahahaha!

Miss Piggy would definatly need at least one Lv in Barbarian.

And probably an initiate of Sharess or Sune. Hmmm, an awakened pig who is a cleric of a goddess of Lust or Beauty? Too funny.

Dr. Teeth is definitely a half-orc bard with a charisma of 15 or more and 15+ ranks in Perform.

Janice is a human bard.

Lew Zealand is a halfling weapon master specialized in throwing boomerang fish.

And Pepe the Crawfish is an awakened dire crawfish with rogue levels.

[Edit] Gonzo as a unique outsider. Maybe from the Green Fields? Hmm, has promise! How about Str: 10 Dex: 16 Con: 20 Int: 8 Wis: 8 Cha: 16.

Actually... My Little Pony's pretty easy to do.

I made one out of an advanced Aserii Barbarian named Phrennzy (who sort of gave me the inspiration). Since Asperii gain a magical rainbow mane when they get enough hitdice and their colour can change, it works perfectly.

Hmm, some day I might have a land of magical ponies, that are so cute and want to go on all sorts of fun adventures with the PCs, and if not, the ponies will destroy them with their sorcerer and barbarian levels.... hmm, Rage Mage ponies! :D

Don't talk to me CG. Anybody who brings up Fraggles is obviously insane. :D

I must destroy all Fraggles. Feed Fraggles to mulching machine. Fraggles MUST DIE!

Henson's studio, now run by his son, also co-created Farscape and made the vogons for the recent feature-film version of Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy (awful movie, tho' the vogons were great). Oh, and of course there was Labyrinth (interesting fact: contrary to popular belief, David Bowie is an actual rock star, not a muppet). And someone already mentioned Frank Oz' Yoda.

Yeah, you gotta draw a line somewhere. Even if Yoda's stats are easy to convert from the Star Wars d20 rules. ;)

Oh, and as to Beaker being a half-elf: it was a spur-of-the-moment choice to keep things from being too human-centric in the troupe, just as suggesting the Swedish Chef could be a half-orc barbarian was. Beaker's long head suggested it, but you could easily make him a human or another race--indeed, his apparent ability to regenerate the damage inflicted by Dr. Bunsen might imply some other race. Suggestions, anyone?

Beaker could be a half-troll (the nose is a dead giveaway) with regeneration.

And my apologies to Pepe. I just assumed he was a cajun crawfish with the accent. That's what I get for assuming. Won't happen again. I think Pepe is hilarious!
